On a day when Super Rugby and SA Under 20 call-ups conspired to decimate their pack, the Sharks XV suffered an unfortunate, although not entirely unexpected, Vodacom Cup loss by going down to Boland on Saturday afternoon.

Sbura Sithole scored the only try for the visitors, his third in three starts and while the boot of Gouws Prinsloo ensured a 16-8 lead for the Sharks at half time, they ran out of fire-power in the second stanza and went on to lose by 21 points to 19. A late try by Boland’s Brendan April put the final nail in the coffin after Ricardo Croy had reduced the lead via two second-half penalties.

Prinsloo extended his lead at the top of the individual points-scoring table with 14 points on the day, but the Sharks XV slumped to third on the South Section log as a result of the loss and will face a huge challenge again this weekend, as the second-placed EP Kings roll into town.

Sean Everitt’s side will still have to make do without all 6 Baby Bok representatives, but may be strengthened a little through players returning from the Sharks tour.

Boland Cavaliers 21 (8): Tries: Milroy Isaacs, Brendan April. Conversion: Ricardo Croy. Penalties: Croy (3).

Sharks XV 19 (16): Try: Sbura Sithole. Conversion: Gouws Prinsloo. Penalties: Prinsloo (4).
