Super Rugby 2012 – Anything can still happen!

It’s been eight weeks of interesting Super Rugby, it has been lacking much, like a competitive Australian team, but for all the things this year’s Super Rugby has been lacking it has had intrigue. It’s been extremely hard to predict outcomes this year and just when you thought it was only an upset the same teams did it again. It looks like the Brumbies are the Australian hope, especially with all the injuries to last year’s champions, the poor limping Reds, they cannot be counted out, but any team that is hanging around the middle of the log can probably not afford to lose any more games if they are hoping to make the playoffs this year. This must be the season with the most injuries. A team like the Reds are sitting with 12 injured players, teams like to say; “No excuses”, but it does not really matter what you say, because 12 injured players says enough.

The Crusaders and Blues can no longer say that they are the dominant New Zealand teams. After almost half of the games have been played surely the run to the top of the log of both the Chiefs and the Highlanders was more than a fluke, even the Hurricanes look like they will be threatening this year, the next ten weeks will be the proof for them. One thing’s for certain, with 4 teams in the top 7 of the log, this certainly must be the strongest conference this season. Only the Blues seem to be falling behind and it won’t help that 8 of their games will be played against 4 of the teams that are in the top half of the log. On the other hand the Brumbies will play 8 of their games against 4 teams that are currently lying in positions 9, 10, 12 and 13. Who thought of this format?…Oh wait!

The Stormers and Bulls continue their dominance of the past few years in the South African conference, with the Sharks lagging just behind them, still struggling to find their best form. The Cheetahs have played some brilliant rugby, had a great tour and are looking to shrug off their bottom dwellers tag, but it seems like they still lack that killer instinct. They will upset a few more, but chances are that they won’t do much better than middle of the log. The Lions, even though they also had a few injury disruptions have been a disappointment after their 2011 Currie Cup success. Sad to say, but as far as the South African conference, it is going exactly as expected, with maybe the Bulls surprising a few with their good form after the loss of a few key players to retirement and overseas contracts.

The question remains, will things continue as they have? The Crusaders have surely made a dent in their fight with their victory over the Stormers this past weekend and can never be counted out as top contenders. The Reds will soon get some of their injured players back and also had a solid victory over the Brumbies before their week 8 break. Could this be the start of their resurgence? Then there are the Sharks that have a run of 6 home games that could possibly propel them to the top of the log if they can return to form and manage to retain the home ground dominance of past years.

Anything can still happen with 10 more weeks to go.

  • Anything indeed. Go Sharks!!! 😈

  • I know we`re leading the FS on the log and still have that bye coming up, but if we had to play against them tomorrow will any of you guys be really confident?

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 2) : I wouldn’t be really confident playing anyone at this moment. The sharks are of their game and not concentrating on doing the basics right. They way they are playing is frustrating. Look at CC 2008/2010, we didn’t make many breaks or play exciting rugby, but we still won most of our games, because we were clinical. Now we just need to combine that with what we have now and I’ll be more confident.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 2) :

and we still have to play them twice…

I’m afraid I’m not very confident. Sharks still have to play
    Cheetah’s x 2

The Sharks should beat the Lions and Force reasonably comfortably but for the rest it’s still a pretty hard road ahead.

  • and in other news.

Jean de Villiers injured ligaments in his hand and could be out for a couple of months. Stormers problem starting now?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 4) : I am afraid I don’t see us getting over 34/35 log points – not enough to make the semis

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) : Wow, so only three more wins for us? You’re really not very confident in the Sharks.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 6) :

We still have 2 byes so that is 8 points.
Wins against the Lions and Force 10 points
1 win against Cheetahs 5 points
we should beat the Highlanders at home 4 points

that is already 27 points + 22. We should get around 50 points but it may still not be enough.

  • OK – I am forgetting the bye. So my guess is closer to 40-42

I am afraid I do not have much confidence that we are going to fix all the deficiencies in our game over the next 3 months:
    – line out not up to scratch
    – conceding to many turnovers at the breakdown
    – conceding points pretty much after every kick-off after scoring
    – unable to build sustained pressure due to poor set piece (line outs / scrums at critical times / turnovers / penalties)

I am seeing some great individual performances, but not very good team performances

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : Yeah, and this is coming from an uninspiring, unconvinced fan, so probably we’ll get two more and make the play-offs? 😎

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

The Sharks scraped into the play-offs last year with 57 overall log points so that will probably be the minimum required.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 13) :

We won 10 games from 16 and drew 1 game. So I reckon we need to win another 6 or 7 games from the remaining 8 to make the play-offs this year.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 14) :

So basically we can’t afford any more slip ups this year. It’s crunch time for the Sharks.

  • Anything can but very little actually

The Sharks will once again “be in with the slightest chance” of making the play-offs each week only to finally make it in 6th or not make it at all in 7th.
If THEY make it in 6th then we will see the usual “there is a chance we can do this” articles and comments, before we crash out horribly in the play-off game.

I expect that as well. We’re just not looking like a championship team at the moment. 😕

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 18) : I’m usually a pessimist (or what we pessimists like to call a realist) but I just can’t seem to be anything but a starry eyed, naive, optimist when it comes to the Sharks and especially when I have to put it in print. What if I post it and it’s just waiting their to be recalled. When the Sharks prove everyone wrong, I’d like to be the one who goes back and say, remember how you all didn’t believe. I’d actually like to copy and paste something I said and predicted and say, see none of you believed me, I was right. And everyone will bow down to my power of believe and my awesomeness! And no Sharks fan will ever be known as doubters ever again.

    The End.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 18) : Just to be clear when I use “there is a chance we can do this” as my title in a few weeks from now, you are not allowed to mock, because we all know that the “there is a chance we can do this” articles is mostly written by me.

  • @Letgo (Comment 23) : 🙂 I was not having a go at you or anyone in the media at all, I was having a go at the team who will:

1st. String the fans along week after week by JUST doing enough to keep the hopes alive.
Then: JUST make the semi-final qualifiers giving us all false hope.
Then: get blown away by the opposition.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 25) : Me 2. And I would also much prefer the 2007, 2008 Sharks who actually had a good shot at winning, but we just don’t look like that team right now, so I’ll be rooting for them to make it, even if they just make it and will be hoping that they will then win three games away from home and win the whole thing against all the odds.

And be disappointed when we don’t and do it all over again in 2013 and hopefully at some point I will be doing it with real hope again, like I did in 2007.
