England to play “best of the rest”

In news sure to be music to the ears of the traditionalists amongst us, it’s been announced that this year’s England tour will feature – shock horror! – midweek matches against two invitational sides, in addition to three tests.

With the traditional long tours of the past having been sacrificed at the altar of rugby professionalism over the last decade, this is the first time in absolute ages that a touring team to the country will play anything other than test matches and the games pencilled in for the English “dirt trackers” should provide plenty of spectacle for those in outlying parts of the Republic desperate for some big rugby.

Two “South African Barbarian” sides, one representing the south of the country and the other the north, will play against the touring English in Kimberley and Potchefstroom respectively and will comprise players from the 8 first-division Currie Cup teams, rather than players on the fringes of Bok selection as I’d originally hoped.

All in all, this is a pretty exciting development and hopefully the pre-cursor for a return to fuller tours in the future as the staple diet of SANZAR rugby starts to taste more than a little bland after so many years and so many matches against the same opposition.

Here are the fixtures, according to SuperSport:

Saturday, 9 June: South Africa v England (1st test), Mr Price King’s Park, Durban (kick off 17h00)
Wednesday, 13 June: SA Barbarians South v England, GWK Park, Kimberley (kick off 14h30)
Saturday, 16 June: South Africa v England (2nd test), Coca-Cola Park, Johannesburg (kick off 17h00)
Tuesday, 19 June: SA Barbarians North v England, Profert Olen Park, Potchefstroom (kick off 19h10)
Saturday, 23 June: South Africa v England (3rd test), Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth (kick off 17h00)

  • Really cool, and hopefully they put together a decent team and a few players get an opportunity to show their potential against an international side.

  • So how many players are England sending over? Enough to make up 2 squads?

  • I’m guessing it will be players that won’t be selected for the Boks this year. Question. Is Willie le Roux contracted to the Griquas or Cheetahs?

  • What a waste!!! Instead of grooming the next tier of players and preparing them for the Boks we field a bunch of no-names! Wish SARU would get their act together!

Why not have 1 game for a combined First Division team (if they really have to be represented) and then an SA “A” Team?

That way we could see Kitschoff, Elstadt, Goosen, Jantjies, Ebersohn, and other guys on the fringes of Bok selection, in action against the Pommies.

It’s a wasted opportunity to trial combinations of the young up-and-coming players and see what they can do! 🙄

  • Any idea if the Cheetah’s will form part of North or South?

    I’m guessing South.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 10) : they won’t be part of either team because only CC 1st division players will be considered.

    I reckon it’s
    South: Boland, SWD, Border, EP
    North: Griffons, Valke, Pumas, Leopards

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I’d have preferred a North and South of fringe players from both divisions (if the lower teams have anybody good enough) so that we could expose even more guys. Such a waste that Adriaan and Andries Strauss don’t get to play England if they don’t make the Boks or a guy like Frans Malherbe and maybe Marcell for a Southern team.

@Pokkel (Comment 10) : Cheetahs don’t get to play as they’re not a First Division team. Such a load of nonsense!!

  • @ChrisS (Comment 12) : let’s put together some teams assuming that Super Rugby players were to be considered…
