31 Province players invited to 3rd Bok planning session

One cannot accuse Heyneke Meyer and his Bok management team of not casting their selection net widely enough – no fewer than 31 members of the wider Stormers training squad have been invited to attend the third national planning camp, in Cape Town next week.

Along with the expected names, the likes of Quinn Roux, Wicus Blaauw, Burton Francis, Danie Poolman, Gary van Aswegen, Louis Schreuder, Marcel Brache and Nick Groom have all been invited, making it clear that the coach sees Province as a fertile breeding ground for potential Bok talent, perhaps more so than any of the other regions.

Then again, it may just be because of logistical reasons that WP get their own dedicated camp, with Meyer and co determined to make up the numbers.

Anyway, we’re pleased to see our old mate Deon “Speenvark” Carstens is seemingly back in the Bok reckoning. Well done, ou Speen – would be great to see you in the green and gold once more!

Forwards: Andries Bekker, Brok Harris, De Kock Steenkamp, Deon Carstens, Deon Fourie, Duane Vermeulen, Eben Etzebeth, Frans Malherbe, Nick Koster, Nizaam Carr, Quinn Roux, Rynhardt Elstadt, Schalk Burger, Siya Kolisi, Steven Kitshoff, Tiaan Liebenberg, Wicus Blaauw.

Backs: Burton Francis, Byran Habana, Danie Poolman, Dewaldt Duvenhage, Gary van Aswegen, Gerhard van den Heever, Gio Aplon, Jean de Villiers, Joe Pietersen, Juan de Jongh, Louis Schreuder, Marcel Brache, Nick Groom, Peter Grant.

  • Wasn’t Blaauw dropped by Coetzee because he wasn’t playing well enough?

  • Glad Heyneke is getting everyone on the same page though. Very excited to have a coach who takes the time to explain to the players what he wants and how and where they can improve.

I hope Peter Grant gets another chance in a Bok jersey. He’s been consistent and solid this year (and for the past 3 years actually) and would be handy in the squad to cover 10 and 12!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 7) :

I saw him during pre-season. He didn’t do much but I won’t be writing him off just yet.

The hype surrounding the player is what gets to me! πŸ™„

  • @Pokkel (Comment 7) :

Just wait till the Currie Cup!!! You’ll be singing a very different tune.

Anyway, Meyer has either gone completely mad or has purposefully chosen a larger training squad (including players he wouldn’t have selected if another team was also involved) so that he could run a larger group through drills.

Names like Wicus Blaauw, Burton Francis & Marcel Brache especially is a definite worry in this team. I mean, why bother with them Heyneke? 😐

  • @wpw (Comment 8) :

    The hype wasn’t that big…

It just became a big story when I suggested the Sharks sign him as a centre option when he returned from the Rebels. Had my head bitten off by those who said Piet Lindeque is the future πŸ˜† and since then it’s been a running joke that JP du Plessis is the next great Springbok centre.

Spoke to Andre Tradoux a junior Cheetahs Scout about signing Piet Lindeque.
Lindeque should go back to bloem he has failed to make the step up.
Watched him against the EP Kings he was on for like 5 minutes and he still managed to screw up.
They boy needs a rude awakening if he does not get his act together he will end up with the Griffons.

  • @Muzi (Comment 13) :

Well he definitely should make a move if he wants to resurrect his career. Saying that he still qualifies for U21 rugby this year, doesn’t he? Could argue that it’s sad a player gets somewhat discarded so early on.

Can’t imagine many teams, besides maybe the Cheetahs or Kings at a cheap price being interested though.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 14) : Piet is still u21, yes, but it’s unlikely he’s going to play 13 ahead of Wandi… I also think the kid might benefit from a fresh environment.

Well that’s why i told the cheetahs scout to go after him.
Your world calss sharks academy failed with Piet that’s why Serfontein and Swanepoel turned down the sharks. 😈

  • @Muzi (Comment 16) : and yet you were going on on another thread about the 400 young centres that have failed to “step up” for the Bulls?

So when a guy doesn’t come through at the Sharks, it’s the Academy’s fault, but hen the same happens at the Bulls, it’s the player’s fault?

    Double standard much?

The way things look at the moment soon Heyneke Meyer will call up the EP KIngs,Griffons,Leopards,Pumas,Griquas,TUT,Wits,Tuks,Luke Watson,Shimange and JP Nel to camp just to give them some confidence. πŸ™„

But but i thought you said Piet was the next big thing at the sharks academy. πŸ˜•
You did this article about Piet while he was still 18 about playing currie cup rugby in two years. πŸ™„

My bad i thought the sharks academy was the best in the country.
That is why KZN players are not signing sharks contracts.
Hans Scriba and Straulli need to get their shit in order. πŸ˜‰
That’s why the sharks are playing kak at the moment !

  • “and yet you were going on on another thread about the 400 young centres that have failed to β€œstep up” for the Bulls”

Yes and we got rid of the crap centres at the bulls ASAP.
Before getting Frans Steyn i suggest you do the same with Heimar and Piet because they look poor at the moment.

  • We all have players who we watch and say they be Boks within a certain number of years,to jump to Rob’s defence.I saw Piet Lindeque at Craven Week for two years and I didn’t say he would play Currie Cup in two years, but that he’d be a Bok by the time he’s 21,not publicly, but just saying the are special schoolboy rugby players and Piet Lindeque was 1,anyone who saw him thn would’ve been crazy to write him off, that I’ll always reserve a little bit of hope for the schoolboys who I thought were special players, good example Lionel Cronje has struggled, always remember the moments the Rec when I was amazed at this wonderfully talented flyhalf, but on the big stage he’s struggled, injuries have had their effects and I hope he can make next year a big 1. I also hope so in Lindeque’s case

  • @Muzi (Comment 23) : can you please just pick a story and stick to it? Either Piet is good enough, or he isn’t… you can’t on the one hand say he isn’t good enough and hasn’t “stepped up”, but then 5 seconds later tell us we should be picking him ahead of other players? Surely?

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : he can’t pick a story on his own, he’ll first have to speak to Xander about it and see what he thinks, if Xander says Lindeque is stuffed, stuffed he will be πŸ˜† πŸ™„

  • @Megatron (Comment 25) : I shouldn’t get into this, I really shouldn’t. Piet is a very nice young man who is trying his hardest. The last thing he needs is for me to get into discussing his relative merits with some unknown bloke on a website.
