Blues coach Pat Lam has backed Michael Hobbs at flyhalf for his side’s weekend clash with the Hurricanes, with Gareth Anscombe, who has been at pivot for most of the campaign, dropped from the match 22.

The outfit shows two other changes to the one that slumped to an embarrassing home defeat to the Reds last week – Chris Lowery replaces Daniel Braid at blind-side flank, while Rene Ranger moves to right wing for the injured Rudi Wulf. Benson Stanley will take Ranger’s spot at outside centre.

Blues – 15 Hadleigh Parkes, 14 Rene Ranger, 13 Benson Stanley, 12 Ma’a Nonu, 11 George Moala, 10 Michael Hobbs, 9 Piri Weepu, 8 Peter Saili, 7 Luke Braid (c), 6 Chris Lowrey, 5 Ali Williams, 4 Filo Paulo, 3 Charlie Faumuina, 2 Tom McCartney, 1 Tevita Mailau:
Subs: 16 James Parsons, 17 Angus Ta’avao, 18 Liaki Moli, 19 Daniel Braid, 20 Alby Mathewson, 21 Lachie Munro, 22 David Raikuna.

  • I think it’s fair to say the Blues are suffering from a serious experience and depth deficiency in their pack… The backline is as good as any, but without Mealamu, Woodcock, Kaino and Co they just fall short… Never picking them for a win again…
