The Sharks team to face the Highlanders at Kings Park this Saturday afternoon has been announced with a number of changes to the team that lost to the Chiefs a fortnight ago. Paul Jordaan has been selected at outside centre, a move that most here would welcome.

Jordaan has been selected in the midfield, along with the inform Tim Whitehead, while JP Pietersen shifts back to the position in which we all know he is a star, at wing. In another backline change, Louis Ludik takes over the reins at fullback from Riaan Viljoen, who after a fantastic start to the season, has seen his form dip in recent weeks.

In the front row, the Beast Mtawarira will get his first Super Rugby start of the season, replacing Dale Chadwick, who falls out of the match 22 completely. Jannie du Plessis and Wiehahn Herbst have been bracketed together at both 3 and 17, and the coach will decide which player will start the match closer to game time.

Jacques Botes retains his place in the starting line-up, with Marcell Coetzee returning to the starting fray, joining Keegan Daniel as the loose trio. Willem Alberts is not in the match 22 at all, as we see another returnee in Ryan Kankowski sitting on the bench.

Fred Michalak and Meyer Bosman will cover the backline positions from the bench, while Craig Burden, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Jean Deysel are the other forwards replacements.

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis / Wiehahn Herbst
4. Steven Sykes
5. Anton Bresler
6. Jacques Botes
7. Marcell Coetzee

9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie

14. JP Pietersen
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. Wiehahn Herbst / Jannie du Plessis
18. Pieter-Steph du Toit
19. Jean Deysel
20. Ryan Kankowski
21. Frederic Michalak

  • Good to see Botes starting. We need the possession.

Really chuffed with the centres, maybe Plum read my comments?

But please guys be patient, you know this is a new combination. Give them the same chance you gave last years` combination. ( meaning you can only start complaining about them around February ! )

  • Great! Win or lose I missed my Sharks this past weekend! Glad to see JPP back AT wing!! And I like our lose trio!

NOW BOYS, take some advise from the SW Queen : The difference in winning & losing is most often, not quitting.

  • @Ben (Comment 5) : Nothing like a bit on the sidelines to sort them out 🙂 they need to pull up their socks and being included may just give them the motivation needed. This team (with maybe the exception of Jannie) has been the performers can’t complain! Viljoen’s mistakes were really costing us, and Big Willem (whom I love) was top in the missed takle in the comp just shows he probably isn’t quite over his injury yet so a time on the sidelines will help that too.

  • Probably the most balanced team of the season imho … We look a bit short at 6,7,8 so I am a bit worried about the lineouts. Having the beast back means that – if he remembers how to play rugby 😉 – We should improve in the rucks department.

Im excited about having JP back on the wing – Ive felt that we have been weak under the high ball and at kickoff for a while now.

The center combination look promising … A line breaker with genuine pace out wide…. holding thumbs for Jordaan.

  • Chadwick was actually pretty industrious after been thrown into the deep end – one thing he could improve on is taking up the ball. That is one department where I think Beast should contribute

Keegan has been the primary jumper at the back of the lineout, and we have Kanko on the bench who is a pretty useful lineout jumper. The guys just need to compete on oppo ball as well – not give them a free ride like they did the Chiefs

  • Just hope beast is then fit enough to play 80minutes, but do understand. As for Alberts, I still think he is a brilliant player. Yes stats say a different story this year but I would not be able to play any sports and tackle if I had a shoulder op. He will be back. As for the line outs I do agree with Ben.

  • It will again be most important, to protect possession in everything we do. In rucks, in passes, in set pieces and even in the way we kick. Then defence also needs to be up to scratch, but if we first insure that we play the ball clinically and don’t make silly mistakes, then we will already make defence easier on ourselves.

  • @jessi (Comment 27) : Yes, that is probably the most exciting centre pairing we have had in quite some time. I just hope that both have their best day possible, or that if they have a tough time on their first game as a combination that Plum at least gives them a few runs to see what they can make with it.

  • I reckon that the Springbok camp had a lot to do with JPP’s move back to wing. Heynecke probably told him to move back to wing if he wants to remain in the Bok team. Good for him.

I’m a bit worried about the light loose trio TBH because the Highlanders are masters at the counter ruck and I really hope Botes and Keegan will be up for it.

I’m very excited to see the new centre combination though.

  • 😈 Good Team! Worried a bit about Beast – hopes he gets the bind early. I would have put Voljoen on the bench after the break and played him at 10 with Lambie on 15 to the end of the game. We may need him for the long range kicks, but then Bosman can also launch them. 😈

I hear what you are saying with regards to Viljoen and his big boot, but he hasn’t been used for long range kicks at all this season.

Cannot have him fluffing the ball at the back in case we get a 60m penalty (which the Sharks usually take the attacking lineout anyway)

  • Finally Jordaan gets to start. Could this be the turning point? Remember us losing 5 on a trot in 2010 before Lambie got a chance due to a player being injured and we went on to win 8 on a trot from there after finally giving a youngster a chance.

    Good luck Jordaan.

Actually pleased that JPP is moved back to 14. I really thought at the start he was going to be a great 13 but eventually had my doubts. He is better at wing and his chances for Bok call up lays at wing too.

Excited to see PSDT again on the bench.

So Alberts never made the bench even says he must be injured. Great to see Deysel on the bench too.

This is a damn fine team.

Go Sharks we still in this thing. Let us show our doubters we can…. 😎

Unfortunately we have Walsh as ref. Hope he gets it right for both teams. He misses too much sometimes.

We need an attacking flyhalf who does not flop balls on the floor when it comes to passing.
Viljoen looks to be in the mould of Goosen and could be coached a bit more. He has played well there for Griquas at 10 and I think worth an experiment.

Beast was the one that I thought struggled, especially at scrum time. I’m still happy to see him starting, I’m confident he’ll deliver his best for the Sharks.

And Jordaan also played and awesome game, I’m glad Plum took note and is giving him a real shot here.

I also thought Jaundre, Steph Du Toit and Sithole has been playing really good rugby. These are the guys I want to see used regularly during the Currie Cup, but we’ll talk about that another time. 😎 😎

  • Like the team mostly…really hope Jordaan has a great game, that Centre combination is crazy good on attack.

Fullback…solid as a rock; but attack wise not so good…maybe we can try Odders next week. Loose trio, weather looks like it could be wet, so not so sure about it…that combination didn’t really work for us at the start of the season…personally i would’ve had Deysel at 7 and keep Coetzee at 6.

But it is a great 22; best i have seen in a long while. C’mon Sharks pump those Highlanders!!! Go Jordaan!!! And Deysel must dominate off the Bench!!!

I haven’t seen him flop many balls, maybe one or two the whole season … and I blame the runners! 😉

If you want to look at flop balls, since I have Goosen under a magnifying glass with all the hype going on around him, he makes at least 1 or 2 passes a game that does not go to hand. Against the Hurricanes, one of these passes cost them a try! I’m just saying, you don’t switch a guy to a different position because of a few errors in his game, you work on improving on that part of your game!

Whitehead and Jordaan, explosive, fast, agile and Creative…if they can’t cut through the defence nobody will.

Dissapointed not to see Deysel in that 7 jersey…but hopefully he can come on with 30 to go and smash some highlanders! 🙂

    Go Sharks!!!

  • @Ben (Comment 73) : But i believe my favourites should be in the starting lineup every week  But still that looseforward trio is the only thing worrying me…bit on the light side…i mean there combined weight is around 300kg; for me that looks a bit light; but i guess Plum is putting a huge focus on being fast to the breakdown this week, and that trio will do that for you.

Keen!!! Also want Sharks XV team teamsheet, gonna be interesting.

  • @JJR (Comment 53) : That loose trio, played together for 40min this season and that was the second 40 against the Chiefs. It is the best we protected our ball all season.

The fact is, none of our other loosies play to the ball as well as Jaques does. This is a very balanced combination. Jacques plays to the ball, he also organises the rucking and defence of the forwards.

Coetzee plays with the ball, bashes and gets us over the advantage line.

Keegan plays a link role for the team as well as a ball carrying role.

I must admit, IMO this is the best loose trio, as a combination we have started with all season.

Deysel in recent times has also changed his game a lot to more of a to the ball player. He gets involved in the rucks a lot, so we could easily go deysel/marcell/keegan, but I still think he tends to shift to the ball carrying role too often.

It’s not that it is a bad thing if Deysel and Marcell carries the ball, but we need players that will cover about 50% of our rucks and be over the ball as soon as the tackle is made.

I’ll say it again. Look at Botes, if he wasn’t part of the tackle, or the previous ruck, he’ll be there for the offload and if the offload is not made, he’ll be over the ball as soon as it goes to ground. We need that. I’m not saying Botes is the only one that can ever do this for us. We will have to replace him eventually, but I’m saying at the moment we have a lot of ball carriers and not many players willing to take on the off the ball responsibilities of the loose trio.

  • I’m also worried about Jordaan. Theres a big difference between Varsity cup and Super rugby. I should say put him on the bench for one or two games, and see what happens then. His defence is not up to standard yet. Play Bosman 12, Timmie 13 (he played that at school) and Petersen 14 with Jordaan on bench.

  • @Letgo (Comment 83) : Ja, i didn’t say the trio named is bad at retaining ball, i think that’s why Plum selected them; i just wonder if they have the ability to create enough good momentum and ball for our exciting backline.

I will just always prefer to have a proper Blindside flank in a loose trio. I’m sure this trio will do great, i would just prefer to have Deysel in there somewhere.

I really like Botes; i just think he is more effective these days off the bench. I bet he steals more ball 30 minutes off the bench than playing the full 80 minutes.

  • @springbok (Comment 102) : Jordaan has never played Varsity Cup, u meant Vodacom…i think what “told” Plum that Jordaan is ready was the game against Pampas XV, pampas have some international players there and Jordaan played great, also made some really good tackles.

And we all know Jordaan is going to do well on attack, but defence we’re not totally convinced, yet; but don’t be surprised to see JPP in the 13 position on defence and then Jordaan comes in at 13 only on attack.

I’m happy about Jordaan inclusion why oh why did Plum not give him more game time off the bench earlier in the competition. Instead he played Joubert off the bench with no success.
Now he dumping him in the deep end to start a game. He could have had a couple of hours of game time by now off the bench. I hope Plum isn’t setting him up for to fail.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 107) : Agree, i’m chuffed to have him get his chance; but it might have been better to give him 20 minute runs off the bench before a full on start in a must win game.I thought his first start should’ve been maybe at 14, and then we swop him with JPP after he gets into the grove of things.

But i’m sure he will do well…i truly want him to be awesome and finally be the guy we can say for sure is our best outside centre. We know that currently Whitehead is our best 12. So i hope that they both combine well and that we don’t have to worry about our centre’s anymore.

Plum doesn’t give youngsters a chance “just like that”, so the fact that he brings him in for a start a 13 says a lot about what Plum thinks of Jordaan; i hope Jordaan can do him proud aswell as to play in a manner that shows why many rate him so highly. Go Jordaan! No Pressure 🙂
