Ludik in doubt for Cheetahs

According to a report on the Sharks website this morning, the squad is looking pretty healthy ahead of this weekend’s away game against the Cheetahs, although fullback Louis Ludik and flyhalf Pat Lambie are both in doubt for the must win derby clash.

Lambie went off at half time against the Force last week and as we reported on Monday, will need to pass a late fitness test to be cleared of concussion. With Fred Michalak playing well in the second half, Lambie’s absence could probably be accommodated, even though he does tend to lift all those around him when he plays.

According to coach John Plumtree, though, there is even more concern about Ludik’s bicep injury and it would be a blow indeed to the side’s chances should the former Lions man be ruled out. It’s probably safe to say that the Sharks’ recent return to winning ways and some level of consistency have coincided with Ludik’s return to the number 15 jersey; Riaan Viljoen will have a big job to do to rebuild a reputation that will have taken a bit of a knock after a succession of poor games earlier in the season.

More information on both players’ will no doubt come out later in the week. We’re expecting a mostly unchanged side to be announced tomorrow, with a number of brackets no doubt adding uncertainty ahead of the kick-off.

  • Nothing lifts a player’s game more than playing against your old team mates. With that in mind, Viljoen will probably have a great game if he is selected.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : well look – we know he can be a great player. He scored an absolute shitload of tries for the Cheetahs last year, so no reason he can’t do the business for us.

Let’s hope getting dropped might have got him motivated.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : Viljoen was our top try scorer until Mvovo overtook him on the weekend

  • This must be the only season I can recall where a prop (Taumalolo) shares the try-scoring record with a fullback (Taylor) = 8 each so far

Jeez but Ludiks work rate has been incredible since he came back.

He may not be the quickest but there is something to be said for a really solid fullback.

Doesnt miss tackles, good under the high ball, relatively good boot, always in position etc.

  • @John Galt (Comment 5) : Perhaps Plum should have used Viljoen at wing and Ludik at fullback in those games where he had them the other way around

  • I must say, the possible loss of Ludik has me as worried as the Lambie’s injury. The composure he has brought at the back has been a vital part of our recovery.

  • The best game I ever saw JP Pietersen play, was his first game for the Sharks where he was playing fullback. It was amazing how he joined the backline at pace and holes opened up everywhere. It was against the Pumas though, I think, but it was pretty to watch.

  • I really think that Viljoen is overrated. At best he cant match ludik for skill, which i dont believe, but when it comes to commitment there is no one in the team like ludik, and i’m talking week in week out. If all the sharks players had ludiks attitude we would not be were we are on the log right now.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : I was thinking along those same lines. Maybe now that Riaan knows he’s not a given for the 15 jersey and Ludik has stood up and done well, he might go out their and give it his best. I predict he will have a great game if he plays.

  • Read this yesterday on News24 that Ludik had picked up a injury and could be out this Saturday. What a great pity as he was playing really well at fb. Never thought he was great on the wing but at fb he was playing very good rugby. Have to say Viljoen was not great at fb so think we may have a problem if Ludik is out injured.

Now read on SuperSport that Plum said Lambie would be fine to start this Saturday. So not so about that, just have to wait and see. Would be a big loss to lose Ludik and Lambie.
