Sharks hang on for crucial win over Stormers

After a first-half in which they dominated proceedings pretty much throughout, the Sharks were forced to endure a few nervous moments late in the game, before emerging 25-20 winners over the Stormers at Kings Park tonight.

Ref Jaco Peyper, who had a bit of a shocker in the second half, missed a blatant forward pass in awarding Gio Aplon his second try of the evening and that score, with about 10 minutes still to play, brought the visitors back within sight of a victory that looked all but impossible after 45 minutes. The Sharks had scored two good tries in the first half, courtesy of Fred Michalak and Keegan Daniel and added a third shortly after half time, with Lwai Mvovo the receipient. At 25-6 up and hunting a bonus point, there appeared to be little the Stormers could do stem the ferocious Sharks tide.

Built on the back of a forward effort that must count among the best we’ve seen from the Sharks in 12 months or more, Fred Michalak and Pat Lambie combined well to keep the Stormers pinned back, with pressure defence from the big men smashing their Cape rivals back in the tackle with regularity. Supremacy in the scrums – and unlikely parity in the lineout given the height advantage the Stormers held – simply added to the Sharks’ dominance and they were well on track to dot down a fourth when a wayward pass from Michalak – otherwise impressive – saw Aplon sprint away for a 70m score. That try galvanised the visitors and they duly applied stern pressure on the Sharks lineout for the next 10 minuets or so, before Peyper’s brainfart allowed them a sniff and ultimately a bonus point that they probably didn’t deserve.

Credit must go to the Sharks, though, for defending a slender lead for an agonising last 10 minutes to emerge from this contest as worthy victors. Willem Alberts won a deserved man of the match award that, in reality, could have gone to virtually any of the Sharks forwards on the day, such was the effort they put in.

The Sharks –Tries: Frederic Michalak, Keegan Daniels, Lwazi Mvovo. Conversions: Patrick Lambie(2). Penalties: Patrick Lambie(2)

DHL Stormers – Tries: Gio Aplon(2). Conversion: Peter Grant(2). Penalty: Peter Grant(2).

PISSED that the BP the Stormers got because of the incompetance of the officials might come back and bite us in the arse at the end of the season.

  • A BP would have been nice – but looking at where we are coming from, handing the Stormers just their 2nd loss is huge in itself.

Must say, Peyper really let the Stormers scrum play loose with the rules – the substitute TH especially almost permanently had a hand on the ground, and they were scrumming in for most of the game.

  • OK. Let’s do some predictions for the last 4 weeks.

    Week 15
    Bulls v Stormers (Bulls 4, Stormers 1)
    Lions v Sharks (Sharks 5)

    Week 16
Stormers vs Lions (Even Stormers should get 5 here)
Bulls vs Cheetahs (Bulls 4 points)
    Sharks bye (Sharks 4 points)

    Week 17
Cheetahs v Stormers (Stormers 4 points)
Sharks vs Bulls (Sharks 4 points, Bulls 1)

    Week 18
Stormers vs Rebels (Stormers 4 points)
Sharks vs Cheetahs (Sharks 4 points)
Bulls vs Lions (Bulls 5 points)

    That gives a total of:
    Bulls – 14
    Sharks – 17
    Stormers – 14

    Leaving a final log of:
    Stormers – 64
    Bulls – 62
    Sharks – 62

See how important a BP try would have been now?

  • Comment 18, posted at 26.05.12 23:09:34 by klempie Reply

  • Let’s assume the rest of the log essentially remains the same

The Sharks would have to fly to Canberra for the knockout and on to Hamilton for a final.

  • How far back before a try is the ref allowed to go for a decision from the TV ref?
It’s laughable that we should have a slo-mo replay going back and forth to see if Lwazi’s foot touched a chalk covered blade of grass and yet an obvious forward pass is totally ignored.
I’m not accusing anyone of bias, it just seems to me that the laws are a bit uneven.

Great performance from the pack particularly – change in backrow selection worked – they are really raising the bar lately and making us eat our words. Pity about giving the bonus point away on the fwd pass try. Not sure what happened with Bresler cutting inside, as oddly he actually looked to the right as well, perhaps lack of confidence in passing off the left hand…

Back to your comment, I’m with you on that one, Lions are going to go all out to beat us, they’ll want to use this game to show SARU that they belong in this competition. Our duty is to treat this game as our season’s defining game, a game that will determine if we really have a chance of wining this competition. We are under pressure in terms of log points and have the least points difference in the top 6. We have teams breathing down our necks and waiting for us to slip a game, the first week after the break we have a bye and the Stormers and Bulls play the Lions and Cheetahs which means they’ll get 5 log points from those games whilst we will only get the mandatory 4 log points that come with a bye. We need to be focused and determined to get our 5 log points from this coming game and also improve our points difference. We need to be accurate and ruthless next weekend.

  • Well done to our Sharks. Jeez what a brilliant first half? Was awesome to watch our Sharks finally produce a game we know they can.

Well done to all the players. Most of all they played as a team. Very proud of our boys.

Apologies to Plum in worrying about the selection. He got it right. So kudos to him. Fred had a good game, but that pass that led to Aplon’s try. Eish!! it broke all momentum there. Thought were were going to score ourselves and boom there was Aplon running away for a try. Pity about that, but he was good again last night. So well done to him.

Beast, Bissie, Bresler, Alberts and Marcell were superb. Marcell surely must be pushing Brussow now for the 6 jersey for the Boks. He has been outstanding all year long.

Just wish for ONCE the ref could get it right. How Peyper missed that forward pass that led to another Aplon try, was astonishing. It was so forward so have no clue how he could not see it or even the AR???? Otherwise Stormers would never have got the bonus point. That could be the point that could separate us at the end, who knows. Just wish we could do the same as we do in cricket and have a challenge. So we could challenge the ref and go upstairs. If it is wrong then we get docked point. Damn something should be done, the refs miss too much sometimes.

Anyhow very proud of our boys. All in our hands now. Have to win all our games from here and probably with some bonus points. Landers are right on our tail.

  • @Shaz (Comment 67) : Hello Shaz,

Really good to see you here again.

It was Viljoen on the bench so doubt Fred would have been taken off.

From what we read here it was Ludik on the bench but it was actually Viljoen. So could be one of the reasons Pat started at fb. Pat is a far better fb than Viljoen.

  • @Puma (Comment 68) : what makes you say Viljoen was on the bench? Did you see him?

Official match stats from SARU say it was Ludik

  • @robdylan (Comment 69) : No Rob I only read that in the paper today. They were giving the ratings for the Sharks and Stormers players and it just said Viljoen never came on. So was really surprised too. I done a quick check on RT as gbs is sharp with naming the teams. He has Viljoen on the Sharks bench. So I guess Ludik probably was not over his injury. Plum must have known and THAT too could have been one of the reasons to start Fred at fh and Pat at fb.

Anyhow have you heard anymore about Fransie? See Metro is out now so that leaves Frans Steyn free from here on.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 73) : and both very difficult kicks

The first missed kick was in a swirling wind right on the touchline, the 2nd from the halfway line with that same swirling wind and in rain coming down hard at the time

    be realistic boet

  • Ludik was at the side of the field with the reserves. I did not see Viljoen. But it doesn’t matter. It won’t change the result. @shaniboi (Comment 73) : Lamb chop? I think I know who’s the chop, boet. And it ain’t Pat. 🙄

Viljoen has been something of a disappointment with his inconsistency. 😥

  • @sharks_lover (Comment 75) : well that might be the difference between winning and losing a game..miss your kicks and your team may be on the backfoot..get your kicks over and u fighting for a first or second place finish..its simple really and that’s why the bulls have been champions in the currie cup and super rugby..I’m not tryna debate lambies ability cause I know he is our ‘wonderkind’ but all I’m saying is what happened if we lost last night..people here would have lost their minds bout the ref..a team has to be prepared to beat another team and the ref too in some cases..the sharks were doing that in the first half and yet the wheels came off in the second and we can’t allow that..especially against the bulls next month..

  • @shaniboi (Comment 88) :
I don’t think you’re trying to detract from a great victory, so I agree with your points in essence.

Lambie has really worked on his kicking though, and the conditions were tough. I thought picking him at 15 helped nullify the Stormer’s kick and chase – despite the trying conditions.

The coaching staff really did well in this game. Next up – no compromise on getting 5 points off the Lions.

  • @catfish (Comment 27) : I thought I was the only one…Alberts had a much improved game no doubt, but who put him into space the whole time?? – Daniel is the best no8 in South Africa..i have no doubt of this (he still wont be selected for Boks though for obvious reasons). I still rate Marcell Coetzee much higher than Alberts.
Best Springbok loose trio on current form:
    6. Brussow
    7. Coetzee
    8. Daniel
    Alberts/Francois Louw (need backup fetcher)

  • I’ll concede that the Alberts selection was indeed correct by Plum. BUt I think this is based on the make up of the Stormers loose NO FETCHERS.
I still believe that playing against teams with specialist fetchers we will have to field Jacques Botes ahead of Alberts!!

We must not make huge changes to disrupt continuity but certain players need game time ahead of play offs so this would be my team.
    1. Beast
    2. Burden
    3. Jannie/Herbst
    4. Pieter-Steph
    5. Bresler
    6. Coetzee
    7. ALberts (needs back to back games)
    8. Kankowski (purely for game time)
    9. Mcleod (i guess because Plum wont give any1 else a chance)
    10. Michalak
    11. Mvovo
    12. Bosman/Whitehead
    13. JOrdaan
    14. Pietersen
    15. Lambie

That Alberts/Botes comment only relates to the top tier teams – Crusaders, Chiefs, Reds etc and teams with awesome fetchers like Cheetahs and Force.

  • What is a concern is that the ref and touch judge was pretty much exactly in line with that pass.
And JDV was popping those passes all night oing to JDJ, even one of them was forward way early in the game which he missed as well.

  • Comment 96, posted at 28.05.12 07:50:54 by SharksRTB Reply

  • My major concern is still the amount of tackling our team has to do. I would expect us to really cement our position at the top of the tackles made list after this game.

You cannot expect the players to last a season
