Kitshoff, Jordaan in tug of war

The start of the Junior Rugby World Championship next week is causing some disruption, and confusion to boot, amongst Super Rugby coaches, according to SuperSport’s Gavin Rich.

Two rising stars in Steven Kitshoff and Paul Jordaan are in the middle of a tug of war between their respective coaches, and the U20 coach Dawie Theron. Both Kitshoff and Jordaan have been selected to represent the Baby Boks in the tournament, but both currently hold down starting positions for their respective franchises.

Kitshoff is the corner-stone of the Stormers front row, playing week in and week out, some would say playing the young man into the ground, but performing at a constant level, while Jordaan has been given the Sharks outside centre jersey recently, and has shone in a team that is suddenly winning.

Both coaches are believed to have approached Theron, requesting that these players join the team after this weekend’s Super Rugby matches, as Super Rugby takes its International Break. Whether this request will be granted, remains to be seen.

According to Sharks coach John Plumtree, it is common sense for the player to play Super Rugby, as this is where the money is, taking into consideration that the franchises are playing their salaries. One can understand where the coaches are coming from, but the honour of pulling on the Green and Gold jersey should surely weigh in.

  • Country first. They should have approached Theron in private to humbly request the use of either player’s services for this weekend – this should never have made it into the press in my opinion.

  • ask the players. Dont think country first, when its the juniors. Super Rugby is huge for a 20 year old.

  • The Lions will be in the same boat as Ruan Botha has been starting for them recently, so interesting to see what they do as well.

  • Baby Boks don’t need them for the first game, Jordaan and Kitshoff should finish off their superugby first and play in the 2nd or 3rd game of the comp. for Baby Boks. I mean at Centre Baby Boks have Serfontein, William-Small Smith and Howard, great players, don’t need to rush Jordaan in, and also up front Dell is a quality prop and If Kebble plays at 1 he should’nt have problems as he is such a huge chap.

Baby Boks have a great squad and they must just use it and manage everyone.

Jordaan would be a huge loss right now, cos i feel Whitehead and Jordaan will be great on the highveld against the Lions…on most occasions in Superugby in Jo’burg our big ball runners and our fast backs often cause havoc for the Lions defence. This is a good game to give Deysel some game time and also to see the Whitehead/Jordaan Centre combo rip a superugby team to pieces.

With Jordaan availble and Frans Steyn also available, i would pop. Steyn on the bench and bring him on for Timmy in the 2nd. Don’t want to over play Timmy, make sure his groin torubles stay away, and with the break Timmy will have a nice period to do some more conditioning and make sure his groin is 100%.

  • @Pat (Comment 5) : Wow, didn’t know Botha was U/20…Lions have some great young locks Botha and Willemse…wonder who will snap them up when Lions get relegated…To be honest i like Botha and Willemse a lot…they both have great potential, personally would prefer to have them than the Marais brothers, nothing against the Marais, just think these youngsters offer slightly better physical attributes.

  • I mean Willemse at 2 metres 128kg and Botha at 2.03m…i mean our heaviest lock at the Sharks right now is Jandre at 116kg, don’t believe that Sykes is 118kg as the Stats say. And our tallest is Du toit at 2 metres. Willemse could fill the holes left by Hagreaves and Skeate…some would say we would have too much depth then, but as we have seen with The Sharks recently, the internal competition is meaning better performances from all on the pitch…that’s great. With a solid rotation policy it could work for sure.

  • @JJR (Comment 8) :

Yep I agree I believe Willemse and Botha have the chance of becoming a seriously good pair, Willemse fits the mould of a serious enforcer, as Ashley Johnson found out, and Botha is excellent in the lineouts. It would be great if we could get them to the Sharks. We musnt forget Pieter Steph either who is also a seriousl prospect.

It also bodes well for the Springboks, potentially with Etzebeth, Du Toit, Willemse and Botha all coming through, plus there are a few big Affies locks who are also supposedly very tall and powerful!

  • I think my initial analysis is right here – and that Gavin Rich has it wrong. SA Under 20 takes precedence over Super Rugby

  • @Pat (Comment 9) : Would be great indeed…if we do get those 2, unfortunately Bresler and Sykes would miss out on selection eventually…but we will see what happens, when Joubert’s contract finishes, we release Bosman, Hoffmann, Viljoen when his contract is up and Ndungane(Fred also leaving), we should have enough budget left to pay for F.Steyn, Pienaar/Kockett, Willemse and Botha to come in new for next year’s Superugby. Don’t think Mtembu will get a senior contract renewal either; but we will see. Oh Yes, forgot, Botes’ time also almost up.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) : I thought that too, but i also thought it was agreed that they could play the superugby game this weekend…once again some confusion regarding SA rugby rules and regulations 🙂

  • Imagine if Sharks could have this group in 2013-

    1.Beast/Dell
    2.Bissie/Burden/Cooper
    3.Jannie/Herbst/Schonert/Van Dyk
    4.Du Toit/Willemse/Sykes
    5.R.Botha/Bresler
    6.Coetzee/Kleinhans
    7.Alberts/Deysel
    8.Keegan/Kanko
    9.Pienaar(don’t think will happen)/Kockett/Reinach
    10.Lambie/ Pieter Jordaan(Paul’s brother)
    11.Mvovo
    12.Whitehead
    13.Paul Jordaan
    14.JPP/Sithole
    15.Frans Steyn/Ludik

That would be awesome for me personally!!!

  • @JJR (Comment 11) : Kockott coming back to the Sharks isn’t such a bad idea. He has been playing some decent rugby in France and even managed to force his way into the starting lineup after a few decent cameos off the bench. He has even managed to tone down his annoying snipes around the rucks. Everyone knows we are desperate for some talent in the scrumhalf area.

  • @lostfish (Comment 15) : Ja, i remember hearing that, so if i was Sharks management i would bring back kockett, release Mcloed and Hoffmann and bring in Piet Van Zyl from cheetahs and keep Reinach 🙂 those 3 would offer The Sharks what we need from 9.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 17) : Kockett should possibly be a bench option…we should get Van Zyl to The Sharks, he would fit The Sharks like a glove,IMO. He plays exactly the way The Sharks like to play.

  • We knew that the JRWC was taking place, the coaches knew everyone bloody knew. There should be no issue here the. In my opinion playing for SA whether at junior or senior level is the priority. The tournament is being played in SA and with the quality in the squad we have a really good chance of winning the thing.

  • @robdylan (Comment 10) :
Maybe, but try telling that to the thousands of fans who will be furious to lose their players. Lets face it, while it is probably more important in the long term, the under-20 cup isn’t nearly as exciting as Super Rugby.

  • @Leviathan (Comment 20) : what about the thousands of fans from the rest of the country who want to see guys like Jordaan and Kitshoff playing for the Junior Boks.

These guys have years of Super rugby ahead of them but they’ll never play fo the Junior Boks again
