Sharks to make do without Jordaan

While the depth in the Sharks squad is impressive indeed at this stage of the season – far more so than what many other teams can boast – the impressive rise to prominence of Paul Jordaan in recent weeks has led to something of a head-scratcher ahead of this weekend’s clash against the Lions.

While you’d think that, on current form, the Sharks should back themselves to get a good result in Joburg, even if forced to make do without a player or two, Jordaan’s non-availability due to commitments to the SA Under 20 side will leave coach John Plumtree needing to find a quick replacement for his in-form number 13. The other regular Super Rugby squad member who will fall out for the same reason is Pieter-Steph du Toit, but with with Jandre Marais ready to step in, or the possibility of bringing Jean Deysel back into the match 22 in place of a specialist third lock, that will cause less concern.

Not that the Sharks are short of options at 13 either, mind you – it’s just that Jordaan really has added a real spark in that position and it would be a shame have to start all over with another player, at least for this match.

Tim Whitehead should hopefully be fit to play this weekend and could slot in at 13 outside Meyer Bosman; that’s probably the most sensible option, with a return to the midfield for JP Pietersen also a possibility. The one that, I’m sure, nobody really wants to see would be a return for Marius Joubert, but in the interests of completeness, I’m afraid that can’t really be ruled out either.

I’m told there’s even a slight, slight possibility, that a fourth option could be considered, should a “certain someone” arrive in Durban on Tuesday as anticipated, now that Racing Metro’s French season is over. More on that tomorrow, though, once we’re able to confirm one way or the other.

  • There is an article on Supersport.co.za where Plum states that he will make PSdT available but not Jordaan. Coetzee is also not happy to let Kitshoff leave for the Bulls clash.

Paul Jordaan is already with the Baby Boks in Cape Town, as is Du Toit.

  • Current SA conference points differences…

    Stormers 69
    Bull 97
    Sharks 57

We need a very big win against the Lions this weekend, especially considering that the Bulls and Stormers still have a shot at them.

  • @klempie (Comment 13) : points difference means next to fuckall chap.

We have significantly fewer wins than the Stormers do, so will never overtake them unless we end up with more outright log points.

Not correct. He won’t be able to play in the play-offs. You must have had a contract with the union on 1 April to be eligible to play in the play-offs.

So Fransie won’t be able to play.

  • @robdylan (Comment 28) : Uhhh…ja, I think so cos they have an extra game to play which would “cancel” out their loss to us if they win. The best we can hope for (imho) is 4th place due to Brumbies automatically getting 3rd. That will at least guarantee that we don’t travel outside SA for the play-offs. But for that we need to pass the Bulls AND Crusaders. If we don’t, we could be travelling to Christchurch or Canberra for a play-off, then Cape Town for a semi and then back to Christchurch, Canberra or Hamilton for a final. No thank you…

  • As long as i don’t see Joubert in the 13 jersey, i will be happy,he should’nt play superugby ever again!

My backline without Jordaan available and Timmy fit.

    9.Mcloed
    10.Fred
    11.Mvovo
12.Steyn (Played really well against Toulon, not in his best shape ATM, but his game is still there)
    13.Whitehead
    14.JPP
    15.Lambie

Bit off topic, Sharks need to either give Reinach some opportunities in CC, or bring back Kockett or sign Piet Van Zyl from the Cheetahs. That’s all i ask 🙂

  • @klempie (Comment 31) : We can Win the bladdy conference…I know it!!! 🙂 Just keep improving everygame, playing full out every minute and we can still lift the title, we still got games against Lions and Cheetahs…not sounding over confident; but we should get 10 points from those games and we play Bulls at home and 4 points from the bye.So If we can get another 18 log points we should have a really good shot at topping the conference 😉 C’mon Sharkies, make it a reality!!!

  • @JJR (Comment 36) : we still got games against Lions and Cheetahs Unfortunately, so do the Stormers and Bulls. It’s not impossible, but we will have to rely on some unlikely scenarios in order for it to happen.

  • @klempie (Comment 38) : Oh Yes, you’re right…okay number 2 in the conference then is probably most likely. Cheetahs still have potential to cause some problems and Lions will maybe be getting some players like Waylon back after June break, so maybe they can do The SHarks some favours 😉 So quarters will be Brumbies vs Bulls and Sharks Vs Saders/Chiefs, then possibly Saders/Chiefs vs Sharks and Stormers vs Bulls in Cape Town, so at least we have an SA team and possibly two in the final. Hoping for a Sharks Vs Bulls final in Durban, again…payback time!!

  • @robdylan (Comment 32) : Wow! that is a loss. Thought Fred was only leaving after the S15 had finished. Look I always want Lambie to start first, but great knowing we have Fred there as well. So that means Lambie will move back to FH this week and Viljoen back to fb if Ludik is not over his injury.

Well now Rob, see it could be Fransie coming this Tuesday. The very reason I kept on asking you today and the past week. I have heard something about that here where I live, but was not sure. Just wanted to hear from you if you had heard too. As you know everyone (knows someone.. who knows.. who knows … etc) so just wanted to check here first. So it is probably true then.
