Eager Pienaar!

After news came through that Ruan Pienaar has been selected to be part of Heyneke Meyer’s first Springbok squad, the player has come forward saying that he is willing to play in whichever position the coach wants to utilise him.

According to Volksblad, the player would prefer to play at scrumhalf, where he has been playing great rugby for Ulster, but would play in any position just to be able to pull on the Green and Gold jersey.

Pienaar has in the past been used as a scrumhalf, flyhalf and fullback, and if my memory is to be trusted, he has an appearance on the wing after coming onto the field from the bench.

This is a great statement to make by a versatile player, but it does beg the question – Where else can he really play? Yes he can cover the halfbacks from the bench, and is probably what he will be doing come 9 June when the Boks host the English at Mr Price Kings Park.

But is this statement leaning towards the player hinting that he would even play at fullback for the Boks? He will know full and well that the Boks have a shortage of quality fullbacks, and if Pat Lambie is to be played out of position at the back, why not play a 50 cap International out of position at the back?

This is not my opinion at all, I expect to see Pat Lambie take the 15 jersey and cement his Springbok role for the foreseeable future after this three test series, but what exactly was Pienaar thinking when he said this?

The Springbok squad will be announced on Saturday, and we will have to wait for the team announcement to see where exactly Pienaar fits in.

  • I think his debut game was the one where he had to come on to cover the wing.

Funny how his story has changed though. Under White and PDivvy he only wanted to be considered as a scrummie but with Meyer he’ll play anywhere. Favouritism??

  • I think Pienaar will likely feature on the bench as cover for 9, 10 and 15. A lot depends on whether D Hougaard is picked on the wing and if FDP starts at 9 though. I like Ruan’s attitude here. No more whining about where he plays, the fact that he’s plays in a bok jersey is enough, as it should be…

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 1) : Na I think he knows the competition is way to close at the moment, so for him just to find a spot he would be happy, never mind no9. He still has only one position in my eyes and that’s no9. He struggled at 10, and 15 he does a ok job… but nothing compared to other fullbacks we have.

  • imagine if pienaar comes back to the sharks, then the backline will be close to a super springbok backline:
    9 pienaar
    10 lambie
    11 mvovo
    12 steyn
    13 jordaan
    14 jpp
15 viljoen(when he finds his from again)

  • If only Pienaar was mentally tough enough he could’ve been a bloody good flyhalf in the style of Larkham.
