After months of speculation, anticipation, rumours and a short stunt on twitter, it was finally made final. Frans Steyn is back in SA!

A few days ago The Sharks announced that they have signed a three year contract with the former Racing Metro talent.

BEELD reported that Frans Steyn is back in SA for two major reasons. In 2009, before a test, while Heyneke Meyer was handing out the jerseys, he was caught off guard by a remark by Meyer.

“Coach Heyneke asked when I will return to South Africa. I was caught off guard and answered that I will return the day that he coach the Boks”.

“Obviously this was said jokingly, but when he got the job, he reminded me and joked that he expected me to keep my word. A man’s word is his honor…..”

The second reason for Steyn’s return is to have his dream of winning a Superugby title in a Sharks jersey, realised.

Since Fransie’s moved to France in September 2009, he has played 61 games for Racing Metro. Gaining valuable experience, he now wants to plow back into South African rugby.

All indications are that he will be part of Heyneke’s plans for the 1st Bok test against England in Durban in a weeks time.

“I was just a child when I left for France in 2009. With my childlike outlook, I believed I was a flyhalf, because that’s where I played all my life. In retrospect, I guess that my coaches also tried to keep me happy by not forcing me and making me realise that I could perhaps be a Fullback or a

“Jake (White) used me at centre in 2007 and made me believe that this would be the position for me to compete against the best in the world, at test level. I did sometimes feel, that I was used in positions where I could not offer a team what I really could”.

“Heyneke told me where he sees me in the team in the way forward – but that I will have to deserve it on merit. I enjoy playing centre, because I enjoy being close to the ball and I enjoy contact.”

So what important lesson did he learn whilst playing in France?

“In France, rugby is a job to earn money to enjoy life and forg friendships. When rugby becomes too important and becomes too much hard work, the enjoyment disappears. When that is gone, you cannot be the player you can be according to your potential and talent.”

“I look at rugby through different eyes since I was in France. In France I realised that rugby is just part of life and not the beginning and end of all…”

Welcome back Frans, it seems a little boy got on that plane back in 2009. But a man is gonna step off that plane tomorrow.

  • Mature interview this. I’m glad he realised there is more to life than rugby, and that he is mature enough to acknowledge that he was mistaken in his insistence on being a flyhalf.

I am really excited that he is back!

  • @wpw (Comment 8) : or that he would never come to the Sharks. I remember posting around then that I had heard form a (now proven ) reliable source that the Sharks, with the Lions and Stormers were in discussions with Steyn. Dudette was also convinced that he would come back, based, I think, on a meeting she had with some family of his in a pub .
