No Steyn for play-offs – confirmed

This one has been doing the rounds for some time now, but we should probably put it to bed once and for all. The Sharks will not be able to select Francois Steyn during the Super Rugby finals series, assuming they make it that far this season.

SANZAR’s new eligibility ruling, hastily brought in this season after the Stormers took the piss last year by bringing in Schalk Brits as a ringer ahead of their semi-final – and even having the gall to claim that the Saracens hooker was a better loose forward than any they could find within their own structures – has been specifically designed to prevent players from joining Super Rugby teams after the European season.

The rules are quite clear – a player needs to have been registered (and available for selection) with the franchise from 1 April and needs to have played four regular season games in order to be eligible for the finals series. That date, I’m sure, is hardly an arbitrary one and since European players only start coming off their contracts toward the middle of May at the earliest, the 1 April deadline has clearly been put in place to prevent the likes of Brits (and Steyn) moving from European rugby straight into Super Rugby.

Steyn, of course, fails on both counts. He is officially with the Sharks from 1 July (3 months too late) and even if he were to be rushed into action this weekend, would still only manage to accumulate 3 games (Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs) ahead of the knock-outs.

It’s sad for Sharks fans, of course; assuming the Boks play little or no role in this year’s Currie Cup, those two matches against the Bulls and Cheetahs at Kings Park may be the only opportunity we’ll have this year to see Frans Steyn in a Sharks jersey.

  • I wonder how much they are paying him for those two (potential) starts in the Black and White for the year?!

  • I understand the IRB wants to prevent teams taking the piss and borrowing players, but the law really shouldn’t apply once a player has been contracted.

  • That must put Plum in a bit of a spot on how to use Frans for the 2 games in July. You need to make use of his obvious class and experience, and at the same time give the guys who need to fight the battle in the playoffs (and uphill it will be) enough game time to stay on top of their game

  • Bad News for us indeed.

Just when everything was starting to swing in our favour.

Well, Steyn could get us into a home play-off position, that should help a bit at least?

Maybe Lambie can keep Steyn out of the bok setup long enough for him to play some CC for us as well? 😈

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 3) :

I reckon Plum should play of the bench. Let Whitehead and Jordaan start and replace on of them with Frans by half time.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 5) : You reckon Plum should play off the bench!? Mate, it’s the Stormers with loosie problems, not us!

Mind you, Plum would probably be a more useful option than MJ at centre… Badabing!! 😈

  • Use him as a utility impact player (for these two games only). Keep the regulars fresh for the play-offs should we make it that far. He could probably do some damage from 12 and 15 against tired players and keep the opposition honest from the 60m mark out.
