Butch James returns to the Lions side at inside centre for their match against the Sharks, with Jaco Taute ruled out for several months after shoulder surgery. James has himself just returned from a 4-week ban for dangerous play.

Uncapped winger Anthonie Volminck comes in on the left in place of Michael Killian in the only other change to the back line that started against the Force last week, while the loss of Ruan Botha to the SA Under 20 side sees Hendrik Roodt elevated to the starting lineup to partner Franco van der Merwe in the second row.

Changes on the bench see Etienne Oosthuizen come in for Jaco Kriel and Waylon Murray make his long-awaited return, at the expense of James Kamana.

Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Butch James, 11 Anthonie Volminck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Tian Meyer, 8 Joshua Strauss (captain), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Patric Cilliers, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 CJ van der Linde

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 JC Janse van Rensburg, 18 Etienne Oosthuizen, 19 Cobus Grobbelaar, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 Waylon Murray, 22 Ruan Combrinck

  • @Ben (Comment 4) :

I think he has a recurring hamstring trouble, he seems to have an ongoing issue with it. Think Volmink is quite a talent so should be interesting to see how he goes and Ettienne Oosthuizen is a big unit, and was unlucky to miss out on U20 JWC selection so should be interesting to see him get a short stint.
Not a bad side for the Lions, I’m sure they will come out firing, but if we play as we have for the past few weeks we should be too strong for them.

  • I’ll confess, I said “Who?!” while reading a bunch of those names. Here’s hoping we’re up for it!

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : That’s the problem. While we are not a team of superstars, there are some very capable players in the squad. I never expected us to win the competition, but I don’t think that bottom of the log truly reflects the potential that some of these players have.
