The Crusaders host the Highlanders in the opening game of the round, with both New Zealand teams looking for a win to lift closer to the Chiefs at the top of the log.

The Crusaders come off a bye weekend which seems a little ill-timed, going into a three week International break, but will be fresh to face their fellow countrymen as they aim to somehow catch up with the leading Chiefs. The Crusaders welcome back early season captain Kieran Read to the back of the scrum, with McCaw returning to the side of the scrum.

The Highlanders have had a rocky road since their great start to the season, and are playing catch up rugby to the get into a play-off spot, a dream which is fast becoming impossible. A loss today will all but put them out of contention. This match should be close and pretty entertaining.

  • I don’t think the Sharks can catch the Saders now.

And I believe the Bulls will win the SA conference. Which means we should try to finish 6th so that we travel to Canberra rather than Christchurch.

  • Playoffs will realistically be

    Brumbies v Sharks
    Saders v Stormers

Of course, if we beat the Brumbies, it will mean we have to travel to Hamilton. If we’re lucky, the Saders will travel to Pretoria and beat the Bulls and have to travel all the way back to Christchurch while we wait for them.

  • With games against the Lions, Bulls and Cheetahs remaining for the Sharks, this result (assuming the Landers don’t get any points) will all but guarantee that we qualify for the playoffs.

  • the sharks now need to concentrate not only on winning but on getting the fifth point. in that case the bye is not that great.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 35) : 3rd will go the Brumbies for topping their conference. I believe the Bulls will win the SA conference, which means that 4th, 5th and 6th will be shared by Sharks, Stormers and Saders…and I believe the Saders will finish ahead of the Stormers. Which leaves Stormers and Sharks sharing 5th and 6th. And in that case, you want to finish 6th so that you go to Canberra instead of Christchurch.

  • @klempie (Comment 31) : Except that travelling means buggerall to the Crusaders. If it was any other team I would have agreed, but zig-zagging time zones donΒ΄t seem to affect the Saders much.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 41) : Working in our favour, is the fact that the Stormers have two extra wins over us, which would ensure they stay ahead of us if we finish on the same number of points. So we’d want them to lose tomorrow night and get one BP. Then even if we get 5 points against the Lions, they will be on 51 and us on 50.

  • @klempie (Comment 53) : You took what I wrote too literally. The difference between them having to travel or not will probably translate into a slightly higher error rate or a lower final score, but I don’t think it would increase our realistic chances of beating them in a playoff much.

The Crusaders are simply a too professional and well coached outfit and have proven over the years, and specifically last year, that they can travel. The run-in they had to the finals last year is a testiment to this. Would we have been able to do that and still have been in it right at the end against the Reds?

I doubt it. After going from Australasia to Twickenham and back to SA (basically same time zone as England) we got pumped by the Stormers if I remember correctly.
