A host of Sharks players have made the Springbok squad, with Marcell Coetzee the only debutant.

The forward selection was dominated by the men in black and white, with Beast Mtawarira, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel and Ryan Kankowski joining Coetzee. Amongst the backs, Pat Lambie, Lwazi Mvovo, JP Pietersen and Frans Steyn complete the Sharks contingent.

Fourie du Preez and Heinrich Brussow were shock omissions, whilst the inclusion of the Lions’ Franco van der Merwe and the Bulls’ Jacques Potgieter and Jano Vermaak were unexpected.

No captain has yet been announced, but Jean de Villiers must surely be the clear frontrunner.

Full squad:

Willem Alberts
Bjorn Basson
Marcell Coetzee
Keegan Daniel
Jean de Villiers
Bismarck du Plessis
Jannie du Plessis
JJ Engelbrecht
Eben Etzebeth
Bryan Habana
Francois Hougaard
Elton Jantjies
Ryan Kankowski
Zane Kirchner

Werner Kruger
Patrick Lambie
Tendai Mtawarira
Lwazi Mvovo
Wynand Olivier
Coenie Oosthuizen
Ruan Pienaar
JP Pietersen
Jacques Potgieter
Chiliboy Ralepelle
Pierre Spies
Frans Steyn
Mornรฉ Steyn
Adriaan Strauss
Flip van der Merwe
Franco van der Merwe
Jano Vermaak

  • Excellent news and richly deserved. And what we predicted a year back. Nice silver lining to an otherwise abysmal evening

    Kirchner out, Joe Peterson in.
    Olivier out, JdJ in.
    Jacques Potgieter out, Brussouw in.

  • Awesome achievement Marcel!!!

Congratulations to all who made it.

Wow! Meyer going balls to the wall straight of the bat!

Dropped Brussouw cos he’s been out of form and struggled to adapt to the new rules.

Dropped Aplon cos he is getting old and not effective in kick-and-chase or the tight.

Dropped de Jongh cos he probably doesn’t think he has enough of an all round-game.

I’m guessing Franco vd Merwe is only there cos of the lock injuries and youth in the pack.

I don’t see an issue at lock though – Flip and Kruger showed today that they have plenty of class.

  • Congrats to Coetzee he relli deserved it. No one can argue about Keegan he relli has been knocking hard at the Door and he deserves it, on his form he even deserves so start ahead of Spies(who somehow always runs in the direction of the touchline and not the try line). But the biggest shock of all is de Jong and Aplon . Come on now , de Jong is the first choice to start at 13 in the whole of SA. There is no specialist 13 in that squad. I’m a sharks fan yes but I wouldn’t have picked Kankowski , that spot belongs to Kolisi. Mvovo is currently the best on form number 11 in SA, deserves that spot but we know Habana will start ahead and that’s understandable(experience) . As for Franco vd Merve(where is Muller , or even Mostert) rubbish selection there. And the ommition of Brussow(form is down but the guy has class) . And this tendency of Vermaak . I’m very angry about that one . There are many scrumhalves in SA that have actually started and did well for their teams (McLeaod?? Duvenage??). Kirchener ahead of Joe Pietersen is just Stupidity . JJ Engelbrech(don’t get me started) now that one just went and proved for me . We have gotten ourselves another Blue Bulls coach not a SpringBok.

  • Comment 59, posted at 03.06.12 08:51:04 by AYA11 Reply

  • We all expected this ,Meyers formula will be easy to figure out .We are going to get clapped by the Southern Hemisphere teams .

Leaving out Gio Aplon is understandable since he is getting old but Brussow (which we all expected to be left out) is not.

JJ Engelbrecht and Wynand Olivier ,seen these guys been turned inside out by players like Quade Cooper ,Carter ,Cruden and SBW .

We should be worried ,I expect Meyer to battle considerably if he continues with this archaic style of rugby.

  • I guess though, once you choose your starting backline:

    9 Hougaard
    10 Steyn
    11 Habana
    12 Steyn
    13 de Villiers
    14 Pietersen
    15 Lambie

    With Ruan covering 9, 10 & 15
    Mvovo or Basson covering wing,
    and Lambie covering Centre…

it leaves very little place for Olivier and Engelbrecht anyway? Hopefully!

  • I personally don’t reguad Jean de Villiers and anythng but a 12 and chances are we will see him at 13 because that position belongs to Frans Steyn . Juan de Jong is the best 13 in SA. Stromers coach must do like Plum(for Keegan) and tell Meyer to open his eyes.

  • @Hmmm (Comment 47) : How is Mvovo ahead of Aplon a surprise??? Make no mistake Aplon should be there but Mvovo has been great this season….
Daniel and Brussow are completely different players, so depends on where HM plays him… As a 6 Brussow takes it hands down – As an 8 Daniel takes it hands down…
And while I believe it was strange to include Kanko based on game time – u are clearly a fan of BIG GROOT STAMPCAR backrowers. When close to form Kanko is exceptional…
so for me it should be:

    1. Aplon for Kirchner
    2. de Jongh for Olivier
    3. Eberhson for Engelbrecht
    5. Grant for Jantjies (and Morne in my opinion)

Personally I agree with what HM sees in Kankowski and Vermaak…but still questionable selections

    My team:
    1. Beast
    2. Bismarck
    3. Jannie
    4. vd Merwe (only due to experience – cant have 2 debutants)
    5. Kruger
    6. BRUSSOW
    7. Coetzee
    8. Daniel

    9. Pienaar (better tactically)
    10. Morne (no matter what we think – HE WILL BE THERE)
    11. Hougaard (more devastating from wing)
    12. Steyn
    13. de Villiers(C) (if you think he lacks pace u r kidding urself)
    14. Pietersen
    15. Lambie

    16. Strauss
    17. Oosthuizen

Habana has been good this year…I’ll pick him ahead of Aplon, Hougaard, Mvovo…plus you lose a great deal of pace if you pick any of those 3 ahead of Habana…(Not as much with Aplon as you do with the other 2…

Vermaak has been good and has a lot more to offer that Mcloed and Devenhage…cleans ball so quick…good defense…better kick than both those and his extreme pace improving the cross and scramble defense of any team…

  • @Hmmm (Comment 79) :you can’t take it away from Duvenage and McLeod that they start games, therefore impact games and hav far greater experience in a top level competition environment . All vermaak has done is bench.

  • My choice for Bok loose trio would have been Coetzee, Kolisi and Burger (when fit), with Alberts coming off the bench.

Habana has been good this yearโ€ฆIโ€™ll pick him ahead of Aplon, Hougaard, Mvovoโ€ฆplus you lose a great deal of pace if you pick any of those 3 ahead of Habanaโ€ฆ(Not as much with Aplon as you do with the other 2โ€ฆ

  • @Ben (Comment 87) : I don’t think he’s making a comment either way, but I suppose you could read between the lines.

Sharks have better players… clearly Stormers are a better team. Heyneke clearly sees more potential in the Sharks individuals than he does in the Stormers ones.

Point is, if he can get those same (Sharks) players to perform consistently in a different setup, then we know where the problem lies… i.e. not with the players.

  • Comment 92, posted at 03.06.12 12:07:06 by Talent Reply
  • @Ben (Comment 91) :I doubt that will happen because firstly the front 3 is going to be an all Shark affair and then in the loose trio we will have 2 players starting , in the form of Alberts and Coetzee . And again in the backline its Lambie , JP , and Frans . That’s a total of 8 sharks in the starting line up

  • Comment 93, posted at 03.06.12 12:08:57 by AYA11 Reply

  • @Ben (Comment 91) :But I would also like to see that happen so that Meyer can be exposed and he can do away with this tendency of making the Springboks a Bulls team , and him getting rid of that mentality nice and early would be great

  • @Ben (Comment 95) :Thanx boet. I would like to see the Stormers buy Jantjies so that we can see him replace Morne because truthfully speaking we need sum1 who can offer much more than kicks at goal. I think other than Goosen . Jantjies is best and he needs to move from the Lions if he is to be taken seriously at the Boks.

I wish to ask a question . Instead of taking the few quality players the Lions have away and totally killing them , Why not help to build them up and improve them .

I think SA rugby will be stronger if we have 4 , 5 very good teams than it would be if we have all the worth while players in 3 teams ?

The stormers already have van Aswegen and the Greek . Would Elton then not block the path off another young player coming through the Stormers ranks ?

  • @Zibbie (Comment 99) :WOW tnx boet , you hav an extremely valid point there , but what more can be done to help the lions . MTN came with a lot of money to offer them . They were on fire during the Currie Cup but then they just dissapeared come SuperRugby. I just feel Elton Jantjies is being wasted at the Lions

  • Comment 100, posted at 03.06.12 13:46:09 by AYA11 Reply

  • @AYA11 (Comment 100) :

well we did have about 13 players injured last night that would have been starting players .

I also feel that for the first time in years the Lions are hanging on to the players they have. Guys like Taute , Elton , Minnie , Strauss .

I feel if they Lions can hang onto those players for another season or 2 and dont get dumped out of super rugby (lots off if’s) we might have a chance .

But clearly thats not going to happen .

Dont think the MTN deal is worth that much though .. not like a 100 mil deal or something like that

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 53) : My thoughts exactly, I’m totally blown away by Meyer’s view that you don’t need a fetcher in the 22. And Brussouw isn’t any fetcher either, he is in the top 3-5 in the world in his position. Am actually wondering whehter to go shell out my hard earned cash to watch this live now…

  • @CapeShark (Comment 58) : What is also confusing about the Kanko selection as well is that he thrives in a loose game, one which we know Meyer is not intent on playing.

  • One thing is clear ( and disappointing ) to me and that is that HM wants to play kick, chase and defend rugby. He actually said something to that effect.

Way I see it our forwards should be able to dominate basically all opposition teams on any given day.

    Then if you choose:
    9) Hougaardt
    10) Lambie
    11) Mvovo/Habana
    12) Steyn
    13) JDV
    14) JPP
    15) Aplon

You can run any team rugged with that back line, while you need not forsake the kicking option should it be necessary.

    Werner Kruger
    Van der Merwe
    Juandre Kruger
    Spies (C)

  • Those wanting the Bokke to lose to prove HM wrong, are just wanting to be proved right more that having a successful Bokke team. The “i told you so” attitude is a little immature. How about we at least let HM have one game before we crucify him.

    Go Bokke!

  • Not going to read through all the comments so i might repeat some things but here goes. Mistake to leave out Brussouw, happy with the omission of Aplon and de Jongh however. Wynand Olivier in the squad is always a mystery but hey, at least he didn’t pick Ricky Januarie… Franco VDM’s selection makes sense, he works hard and is as solid a lock as you’ll find and with Bekker out brings some old man mongrel to the pack. If Schalk Burger, Duane Vermuelen, Andries Bekker, Kitshoff and perhaps Nick Koster were all fit, the Stormers contingent would be up to 9, Kolisi is unlucky to have been overlooked, but to be fair Jacques Potgieter is a monster and suits the game Meyer wants…
