An unratable performance

We’ve all been brought up, I’m sure, to believe that it’s better not to say anything at all if you don’t have anything nice to say.

On that basis, I’ve taken a completely unilateral decision not to do any players ratings after Saturday’s horror performance by the Sharks, which saw them lose to the Lions by 38 points to 28. While I know that most fans (myself included) are shocked and upset about the loss and would appreciate the opportunity to just have a good old vent, I cannot say with clear conscience that I see any point in going through the team, name by name, making negative comments and assigning a low score.

Quite simply, nothing good can come from that.

The players themselves are under no illusions as to exactly how poor they were on the day and having chatted to one or two of them, it’s pretty safe to say that they are as disappointed with the performance as we all are. Sharks rugby as a whole took a big step back on Saturday, but the team now has a month’s break in which to dwell on what went wrong and make plans to put it right.

It’s not a great situation to be in, but it is what it is and no amount of nit-picking and moaning from us is going to change it even one bit. While I don’t expect you all to follow my decision not to openly criticise individuals, I would respectfully ask that you refrain from sweeping statements and personal attacks, as always.

For those desperate to see some form of number, let’s give the team as a whole 3/10 for this week and leave it at that.

  • It is quite simple for me. The Bok players did not want to put their bodies on the line to save themselves for next week. The rest of the team followed

  • Sharks did not pitch up for this game. Us as proud supporters was disappointed once again. Don’t think I’m that surprised though.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 1) : I agree, and Plum alluded to it earlier in the week suggesting he was going to back youth, but obviously didn’t have the balls to follow through. If only they all displayed the same level of hunger as Ludick, he made a helluva impact.

  • @lostfish (Comment 4) : I agree.

@neilster (Comment 5) : That was my thought as well. It was almost as if HM had whispered into the guys ears “don’t get injured I need you next week” and both the Sharks and the Bulls who together have 82% of the Springbok squad (more if you include Frans) lost over the weekend. After being favourites… that’s not suspicious at all!!

  • I hear what everyone is saying BUT I don’t blame the old boks/new boks. The TEAM didn’t do great. Just as the TEAM of the LIONS without boks did great. The Lions just did their homework well. They knew Plum would rely on the forwards. But if you look at all the tries the Lions dodged the forwards and took the gaps from our backs faults. The forwards didn’t get ball in hand. And if the Lions saw that there is a possibility of being tackled by one of the big forwards the immediately passed. What must the forwards do then? Let all of them follow the ball and leaving gaps that would have anyway make more space fro Lions. I don’t think Marcel had his best game ever. Also he can have a not-so-great day. I honestly think the Lions outplayed our tactics, def recognised our weak spots and hammered on that. We won the stormers that way. We knew they lost valuable forwards, so target that and tackle the backs. I can’t blame any individuals but as a team they didn’t pitch.

  • Same story every year from these guys ,make a last minute run for the play offs and fallout .Then they are always disappointed with themselves ,excuses excuses.

Maybe they are to blame for poor crowd attendance?
Who didn’t see it coming ?

  • I said to my wife just before the game started that I’m very nervous about the game because the Sharks seem to drop down to lower levels of intensity when they play weaker teams…..how I hate it that I was right.

The Sharks still don’t have that killer instinct.

Then they go and score 2 tries in 5 minutes and get all of us very excited and then disappoint us all again.

Remind me where I’ve seen this script before?

  • First of all, I want to say the Sharks did not play well BUT if a team get two freebie tries from the ref then they are tails up and the other team must fight. The first try….. clearly offside (in front of the kicker). Second try…… How many moves can you make Fall, crawl, place crawl a bit further and then score. Both should have been penalties for the Sharks and the last try? AR says grounding good, the rest is history. If they did not get that first two tries, it would have been a different story. Michelak should also not have taken that tap, but then again a Lion player (I think 11) clearly shoulder him and take him out of play after he kicked the ball. I am going to change my story. The Sharks did not lose, the ref gave it to the Lions. It sounds like sour grapes, but it is TRUE. I hate incompetency. Is that a word in English? Well I still hate it. Refs are totally incompetent. I want to repeat what Andy Roddick (tennis player) once said on a court: “Kids you must study hard, otherwise you will become a ref”
OK I feel better now. Thanks for listening. It was a LOOOOng weekend.

Then it was Lions backs running onto fantastic quality ball which will always make you look stupid.
Awesome work by Lions coaching staff who obviously picked up that if you tackle the ball and not the man, the sharks pack is impotent.

  • it’s amazing how much of a difference a week makes in sport, last week nobody on this site could get themselves to evaluate the sharks objectively, it was all “my favourite sharks player is jouba or honiball or davidson”, now it’s all despair and we won’t review the performance.

that is just sad and a display of downright toadyness – “oh when our team is winning we’ll give them stars on their foreheads but when they shit we’ll save them the inconvinience of an honest appraisal” 😯

i know politics are a no-no on this site but i can’t but make comparisons to a certain ruling party’s supporters hehehe

  • @Megatron (Comment 23) : You’ve got it right there in that we’re not giving an honest appraisal of each player. The Lions arrived on Saturday and wanted to play the game and it seemed as though the Sharks were already thinking about 9 o’clock and who will be selected for the Boks.

A week makes a massive difference in sport and the Sharks are the ultimate paragon of this difference. The game against the Stormers the whole team stood up and played as a team. On Saturday, it didn’t even look as though the different combinations were on the same page. The only thing which survived was the Beast/Bresler bromance and Beast’s dogged determination not to let Bresler fall down on his head no matter how much Bresler tries.

Spank them all on the hand, take away a ladybug because they “don’t play well with others” and drop them in the dunce’s corner.

Like Talent said, same story every year; so I’m not about to join the pity party about how disappointed the team is in themselves etc etc. This is the real world – we all face tough situations, and when we perform badly, the general public do not come along and disguise the fact that we screwed up.

    Raise your game Sharks.

  • Can I make things a little worse? Misery loves company right!

The Sharks’s chances of making a play-off has gone from about 95% to 5%. We can get a maximum of 14 points in the last 3 weeks. The Reds 15 and will then have won 1 more game than us. If they want to make the tops six all they need to do is Rebels 5/ Highlanders 4/ Waratahs 5. Because we are probably won’t get 5 against the Bulls or win for that matter.

The Hurricanes still have to beat the Chiefs and Crusaders and the Highlanders have the Reds and Chiefs to deal with, but can still also beat us to the top 6 if we don’t get maximum points.

This blows, why give us hope and then just rip it away from us… it’s cruel damn it! 👿

  • @Letgo (Comment 36) : That may just be a blessing in disguise. IMO only the top 2 on the log and maybe the Crusaders have a realistic chance to win the S15.

All the issues that bugged me earlier in the season were back with a vengeance:
    – poor protection of own ruck ball
    – lineouts
    – poor defense
    – clueless on attack except for the 10 minute period at the start of the second half

I know it is always dangerous for a team with all to loose playing a team with nothing to loose. I can understand the Bok game in a week affecting some players’ intensity, but that does not excuse the execution of the basics of rugby

I haven’t seen such a betrayal of the fans trust since the Stormers refused to run out the tunnel in ’99. It’s so obvious now that the dudes were saving themselves for the England Test. Shameful, is what it is. For what it’s worth only Louis Ludick seemed particularly interested in trying to win the game. And for that I am grateful. Thanks Louis. 🙄
