South Africa (22) v England (17) F/T: 1st Test

Test rugby is back in the Republic, with Heyneke Meyer’s Bokke taking on the might of the English in Durban.

Despite a new coach and captain – and a pack that sees debutants in the 4,5 and 6 jerseys – South Africa have a side bristling with international experience and will be keen to get off to a winning start in 2012 after the disappointment of last year’s World Cup exit.

Stuart Lancaster’s England, though, are becoming quite a settled side though and recorded an unexpected second-place finish in the recent 6 Nations. They will be no pushovers at a ground that has hardly favoured the hosts (they have won only 16 times in 27 starts at Kings Park).

South Africa: 15 Zane Kirchner, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jean de Villiers (capt), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 François Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Coenie Oosthuizen, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Keegan Daniel, 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21 Patrick Lambie, 22 Wynand Olivier.

England: 15 Mike Brown, 14 Chris Ashton, 13 Manusamoa Tuilagi, 12 Brad Barritt, 11 Ben Foden, 10 Owen Farrell, 9 Ben Youngs, 8 Ben Morgan, 7 Chris Robshaw (capt), 6 Tom Johnson, 5 Geoff Parling, 4 Mouritz Botha, 3 Dan Cole, 2 Dylan Hartley, 1 Joe Marler.
Replacements: 16 Lee Mears, 17 Paul Doran-Jones, 18 Tom Palmer, 19 Phil Dowson, 20 Lee Dickson, 21 Toby Flood, 22 Jonathan Joseph.

Date: Saturday, June 9
Kick-off: 17:00
Venue: Kings Park, Durban
Referee: Steve Walsh (Australia)
Assistant refeerees: Alain Rolland (Ireland), Simon McDowell (Scotland)

Television match official: Iain Ramage (Scotland

  • Gonna keep an eye on Botha and Barritt. I wonder whether they will pitch up in their first test in a white jersey at home. Frans Steyn vs Barritt at 12 should be very interesting!

  • Lots of pressure on the 3 debutantes . All 3 of them have to fire today or the Boks will be in for a long evening …

  • Totally overdoing the forward bash-it-ups. We´ve now lost possession three times this way. And if we´re not bashing it up it´s bloody up-and-unders. Zero creativity in the backline. We could use guys like Aplon and JdJ round about now.

I suppose for a first time together it isn´t too bad overall, except that the AB´s also played together for the first time this morning and we all saw how that went.

  • @Franshark (Comment 35) : I hate this stupid queue we make to advertise the kick. And why is every ruck a two minute affair? Jeez, man, can´t we speed the game up? Or can´t our players get into position fast enough?

It´s soccer fever here in Europe and I keep telling the Germans how boring their game is, but this is just meh.

  • @CS (Comment 127) : It looked that way simply because the game opened up. Why we don´t play a fast, in-your-face game I can´t understand. Why can´t our ball carriers get ready quicker and take the ball running? Alberts tried it once near the end and found a massive hole, but dropped the ball. Is that the problem, that our forwards can´t catch running at speed?

  • I think JdV did a superb job with his firts Captaincy, and he played his heart out. Alberts was fantastic, so was Habs. Ru impressed bigtime. Thought our 3 debutants did a very good job.Lambs also made a huge impact when he came on. Darn damn damnit..I never thought I’ll say this, but Coenie did excellent work in the scrum!

For 3 quick camps and 1 weeks prep, I think we did a good job. If Steyn had his kicking boot on, this would have been a comfortable win.

Looking at the injuries (bleeding, black eyes etc, it looked like a blooming WAR!) And the kakies lost!

Wonder if Barrit can see this mornin..

  • Didnt read all you guys’ comments. But, Marcell and Willem were massive!! I think they must now be the starting pair for the Sharks from now on. Seems they packed in their A-game for the test and held back at the Coke Tin

Lambie was much muuch MUCH more involved and a factor than Krusty ever was and will be. But prepare yourselves to see Lambie more in the 15 jumper. Morne sees Johan Goosen as his biggest competition and sees Lambie as the perfect fullback….

Jean also had the game of his life. Never seen him play like this for the WP…or very long ago.

Hougaard was a bit of the ball and disappointing, JPP a lil anonymous and Habs epic!

Also think that the debutants showed WHY they were chosen and stepped up big time.

Lets see “who” arrives for the second test!! They cant go on like this for 3 tests in a row AND then go on to finalise the S15 in the same state. And then the 4Nations (what the heck is the name of the new tournament) awaits!! 😯
