According to our friends over at SchoolBoyRugby, the KZN Under 18 Craven Week team has been announced and were capped at Kings Park yesterday afternoon.
The team comprises a good mix of players from most of the top schools in the province, with Glenwood (6), Michalehouse (6), Kearnsey (3) and Maritzburg College (3) providing the bulk of the side. Westville and Hilton have delivered just a single representative apiece this year, while there are even two boys from smaller schools in Port Shepstone’s Patric Sikhosana and George Campbell’s Mondli Nkosi .
Michaelhouse lock forward Justin Moberly will captain the side.
The team is:
15. Jesse Kriel (Maritzburg College)
14. Bruce Arnott (Michaelhouse)
13. Michael Mvelase (Michaelhouse)
12. Sandile Khubeka (Kearsney)
11. Corne Vermaak (Glenwood)
10. Rob Anderson (Michaelhouse)
09. Cameron Wright (Hilton)
08. Josh Moon (Michaelhouse)
07. Jean-Luc Du Preez (Kearsney)
06. Carel Swart (Glenwood)
05. Daniel Du Preez (Kearsney)
04. Justin Moberly (Michaelhouse) (Captain)
03. Mvevo Khumalo (Maritzburg College)
02. Vuyo Khatide (Maritzburg College)
01. Patric Sikhosana (Port Shepstone)
16. Steven Hardman (Michaelhouse)
17. Mzizi Zondi (Westville)
18. Sihle Nqxabi (Glenwood)
19. Michael van Aardt (Glenwood)
20. Mondli Nkosi (George Campbell)
21. Nkululeko Marwana (Glenwood)
22. Mthokozisi Makhabela (Glenwood)

And we are sure this time around it is an all-under-18 team? π³
@FireTheLooser (Comment 1) : well, with that many Glenwood boys, how can yo be sure? π
Where is that big 13 we had last year? Forgot his name. Is he finished with school? At the academy now?
Well done to all the boys! ALL the boys have been checked and had their ages verified by an independent auditor. Good luck to the team π
@Ben (Comment 3) : Tyler Fisher, yes. He’s in the u19 squad this year.
@Ben, you talking of Tyler Fisher or Dean Moolman. Tyler I believe is playing Sharks Under19 and Dean is playing Bulls Under19…
@Grasshopper (Comment 4) : π
Was just teasing, you know! What can you tell us about the Glenwood boys this year? I hope we’re not losing too many of them to the Blue next year…
Sheppy!
@robdylan (Comment 5) : That’s him. The next Andre Snyman.
@Rob, I only know that Carel Swart (flank/No8) who played SA Schools Seven’s last year is probably off to the Bulls. He has had a mediocre season but class is permanent and form temporary. Corne Vermaak the wing is in grade 11 so will be playing schools rugby again next year. Not sure about the others. Funny though, Shaun Adendorff was only selected for the Sharks Academy side when in matric, was offered a Bulls contract and is now a star for the SA Under20’s. Just shows, like Marcell Coetzee, that making the provincial schools side does not guarantee success. Very proud of Glenwood Old Boys Shaun Adendorff and Matt Torrance (playing for Scotland Under 20’s)…
@Grasshopper (Comment 6) : Do you think Tyler will make the Baby Boks next year? Competition stiff at 13?
@Grasshopper (Comment 10) : Are we sure about Adendorff’s age? He looks 30! π
@Ben, well you can never say never, it depends on how he performs this season. There are 2 current Bok Under20’s who are 19 so eligible for next year, Tshotsho Mbovane and Jan Serfontein. There are obviously the other Under19 provincial centres and some good schoolboy centres coming through…..tough to say. I think both him and Dean Moolman have a decent chance…
@Ben, hahaha! Maybe it’s the Voortrekker type beard that makes him look older π
@Grasshopper (Comment 13) : Jan Serfontein only 19 now? Man that’s impressive. Where did he go to school?
@Ben, he is a Grey Bloem prodigy. Another one coming from their Bok centre factory….Small-Smith is Grey Bloem too…
Jan is 19,but not Mbovane
@Ludz, ages, weight etc listed here for the Bok Under20’s; http://www.irb.com/jwc/teams/team=3442/index.html
What, no Port Natal guys!! π
@Grasshopper (Comment 18) : What are your thoughts on Zelinga been overlooked for SA u20? How does the Glenwood 1stxv look for 2013?
@Grasshopper (Comment 14) : Didnt Adendorff have a older brother who was quite impressive and touted as a future Shark/bok?
@Grasshopper (Comment 18) : But you are not legible to play u20’s if you turn 21 the same year? Are you?
@Ben (Comment 22) : You have to turn 21 the following year. else Carr, Etzebeth, Coetzee etc would all be eligible.
But if you went to Glenwood you might be able to play U16
@chucky (Comment 23) : Actually Coetzee is 21 already. Don’t know about those others.
But Mbovane doesn’t qualify to play next year as he turns 20 this year.
@Chucky, I was very dissapointed for Fred as he has proven himself in the Sharks Under 21’s and Sharks IX for 2 years, playing both scrumhalf and flyhalf (ideal utility back). I do feel he is better than both Tony Janjtes and Griesel and should have been picked. I know why Theron picked Handre Pollard, for his extra bulk, but schoolboy rugby is very different to senior rugby. Anyway, Pollard is a prodigy like Goosen and did well the other day. I do think Fred might still get called up in Jantjes does not recover from his injury.
With regards to the Glenwood 2013 side, we only have 3 or 4 1st team players returning next year, these being Rupert Kay (flank/lock), Mazibuko (lock), Corne Vermaak (wing/fullback) and Spamandla Ncgobo (wing). I think Rupert will be made captain and he was picked for the Academy side. Combined with some excellent Grade 11 boys playing 2nd’s, 3rd’s and 4th’s and the relatively strong Under 16 group we should be fine. It will be an inexperienced side with far less expectation than this year, so they might surprise a few. I think the key to 2013 is to plan the fixtures properly and to not take on too much. This year the side has 25 games, far too much. Also, they played about 11 games in 10 weeks against Top 20 sides. We need to build the season up slowly, playing easier sides like Voortrekker, Port Natal and George Campbell before going to Easter Festivals. Also, we should only play 2 festivals, not 3. I don’t think we are contracted to Wildeklawer for 2013 so should only play 2. I also don’t think we are contracted to Kearsney in 2013, so we may end up playing either at KES, St Stithians, College’s 150th festival or Grey PE….who knows. Kearsney and Westville and shaping up to be the big guns for 2013….
@Chucky, yep Ian Adendorff was a powerful centre who played Sharks Academy and Shimlas 1st team, but not sure what happened to him. Maybe injury. Nice chirp there, hahahah! Maybe even Under 13 at Glenwood… π
@Grasshopper (Comment 26) : Interesting to note.
25 games are much too much I feel for a schoolboy season. Easy way for wear and tear and potential long term damage.
Is the Glenwood v Grey bloem still a fixture on the calender?
Whats your affiliation to the school/ team?
@Ben (Comment 15) : ja man! They were a formidable centre pair who came through the grades together if I remeber correctly…it was Serfontein and another outjie (who’s name I cannot recall now)
@Grasshopper (Comment 27) : pity about that..good to see you can have a laugh and not get so offended like some guys these days.
@Grasshopper (Comment 26) : What on earth is the Sharks IX team? π
@Ice (Comment 29) : What was that big 8th man / flank who captained the Grey bloem team and then came to Durban to play Sharks / academy. Where is he?
@Ice (Comment 29) : William Small-Smith?
@Ben (Comment 33) : Nope, it was Geldenhuys or something…I’ll go look – think they played together since U/16 or something..
@chucky, yep the Grey Bloem fixture is still on and will be at Glenwood. It’s a very hard day out for our boys spending most of their time behind the posts. It’s a great leveller though as many of our teams only lose a couple of games a season. Our 2nd’s and 3rd’s are unbeaten in KZN. Here are the local fixtures and results (remember to add 4 games from the pre-season Argentina tour);

@Ben (Comment 33) : Dries Swanepoel..
@Ice (Comment 34) : Piet Lindeque? I heard he played with someone good and then they parted ways. Might have been Serfontein.
@chucky (Comment 32) : Theisinger?
Best not to ask
@chucky (Comment 32) : when?
@Ice (Comment 36) : Got no clue who that is. Never heard of him..
@chucky, I am a proud Glenwood Old Boy from the mid 90’s and have a few friends teaching/coaching there. I also have family teaching at other schools in KZN so get a good feel for what is happening at most of the schools.
@Grasshopper (Comment 35) : Thanks for that. Good to see a win over Monument.
Affies and Grey Bloem will be a nice one to catch. Are you coaching any teams ?
@Ben, the Vodacom Cup side, what is that called then?
@Grasshopper (Comment 43) : Sharks XV. XV = 15.
@robdylan (Comment 38) : Thats the one Rob..whats the story [email protected]Grasshopper (Comment 41) : Also a old boy..nice to see your involvement!
@Ice (Comment 34) : Dries Swanepoel is the name you looking for
@chucky, yep it was a good win but Monnas are having a nightmare season, probably their worst in decades. So it puts the win into some perspective. I think Glenwood are probably ranked fairly around 20th in the country, a little drop from the lofty years of being in the Top 10, but hey swings and roundabouts comes to mind. Affies will be very tough in Pretoria and I fear a biggish loss. Grey Bloem at home maybe better, it depends on injuries from Craven Week etc. Yep, I do coach but can’t say who π
@Ludz (Comment 46) : Who did Piet Lindeque play with at school?
@Ben, hahaaha, sorry my bad. Big brain fart there…..yes you are correct XV
Im surprised there are not more Kearsney players there.
Glenwood have been average this year compared to years gone by.
There has to be 11 players of colour in the match 22 so that might be the reason. (glenwood having more players of colour than Kearsney)
@chucky (Comment 45) : he hung around in Durban on a junior contract for about 3 years… was always injured and only played about 4 games in total during that time.
Terrible attitude. Eventually sent him back to Bloem where he played a few Vodacom Cup games before sinking without trace.
Sometimes the schoolboys who come with the biggest hype go on to deliver the least. It seems his mate Neil Jordaan (another grey number 8) is the same.
@John Galt (Comment 50) : Thanks for spoiling my day. π
@Chucky, good to see another Old Boy on here. What do you think of my Glenwood Old Boy dream team of current players?
1) John Roy-Jenkinson – Leopards and SA Under20
2) Kyle Cooper – Sharks
3) Robbie Harris β Leicester Tigers/Sharks OR Deucullen van der Merwe – Sharks Under 19
4) Brendon Groenewald – Cheetahs Under21 and Sharks XV
5) Nic Strauss β Narbonne (France)/Sharks OR Wade Elliot – Sharks Under19
6) Shaun Adendorff – Bulls Under19 & SA Under 20
7) Francois Kleyneins β Sharks XV and SA Under20
8) Warren Whiteley – Lions
9) Matthew Torrance – Scotland Under20.
10) Fred Zeilanga – Sharks XV & Under21
11) Corne Vermaak β KZN Schools
12) Kobus Lourens – Leopards
13) Ian Adendorff – Sharks Academy & Shimlas Varsity Cup
14) Dean Moolman – Bulls Under 19
15) Greg Manning β Perth, Australia

Peter Zsitvai β Hungary Fullback
Alwyn Janse Van Rensburg – Sharks Under19 flank
Nanyak Dala – Canada Flank at the World Cup
Meyrick Walker – Bulls Under19 Flank
Shaun Malton – Sharks Under21 hooker and Captain
Dean Muir β Sharks XV and Old Boys hooker
Brian Shabangu β SA Sevens and flank
@Grasshopper (Comment 49) : Your thoughts on (hope I remembered his name correctly) Warren Potgieter? The Glenwood flyhalf if I’m not mistaken. Watched a Glenwood game the other day and he seem to perform really well and has a pretty big boot on him.
@robdylan (Comment 51) : Thanks mate. Guess he thought he had already made it.Was always hanging around with Andries Strauss and co. been an old Grey he prob assumed he had a straight walk in not considering the juggernaut that is Marcel Coetzee
@Grasshopper (Comment 47) : Thanks for the updates. Great stuff
@vanmartin (Comment 54) : Size 13? π
@Ludz (Comment 46) : yeah – see comment 26 π what happened to him? They were the next best thing to sliced bread I’ve heard..
@John Galt (Comment 50) : we don’t discuss that matter here, John. Please refrain.
@Ice (Comment 57) : apparently he’s picked up a nasty injury, according to what Muzi was saying the other day
Great to see MHS producing, again, been a bit quite the last couple of years…great stuff!! Good to see them produce a blend solid of forwards and backline players…for a couple of years it was always the backline.
Think they giving more food now…i had to have 5 protein shakes a day and steal food just to satisfy my apetite π
Guys it’s bothering me now. Who was Piet Lindeque’s centre partner at school?
@Grasshopper (Comment 53) : Love the team… surprised to see some names there and where they plying their trade.
From about 2004 there was some excellent recruitment and scouting by Sean Erasmus and co.
Really like the loose trio.
Warren Potgieter looks to have a bright future..like his play as well and the wing who was absent against College
@Van Martin, I think Warren has great potential and has not quite reached the heights he achieved whilst at EG Jansen. I think changing schools and provinces in grade 11 is not a great idea. However, I think with the right attitude and work ethic he should make the Sharks Under 19 squad. A huge boot on him, that is for sure. I also think he is better at fullback.
@Ben (Comment 61) : Wandile Mjekevu?
@chucky (Comment 64) : π π
@Chucky, yep Sean has done extremely well in attracting the best from around the province. Maybe the quality of his coaching is atraction enough. Shaun Malton is now heading to Saracens as he was ousted by Monde Hadebe in the Sharks Under21 side and then played some Varsity Cup rugby. Yep, the loose trio of my dream team has extreme pace, maybe lacking a bit of brute force and size. Plenty skill though. Yes, the wing you are thinking of is Dylan Coulsen who unfortunately did not make Craven Week, but I think still has a rosy future..
@Ben (Comment 56) :
@Grasshopper (Comment 63) : Thanks!
@John Galt, I think Kearsney are going on a cricket and choir tour when Craven Week is on so a couple of boys did not go to trials, however I think the 4 best Kearsney players did get picked. There might have been one or 2 more if the tours were not on. The young flyhalf Tedder might have made the Academy side..
Interesting read on schools rugby, I tend to agree; http://www.sport24.co.za/Columnists/TankLanning/School-rugby-needs-to-change-20120614
@Grasshopper (Comment 66) : yEA cOULSEN IS THE PLAYER. sorry caps lock on
Pity about Malton, but im sure he will use it as an opportunity to grow.
Interesting that of the hookers pushing to get into Sharks barring Burden and Bissie and lesser extent Hadebe, went to glenwood.
Kyle Cooper
Shaun Malton
Dean Muir
Following in old John Allans footsteps.
And mind you all rethreaded hookers as was John
The Springboksβ home Test matches could be broadcast on e.tv after the SABC said it would no longer be televising them βdelayed liveβ.
The SABC wanted live rights, but SuperSport could never agree to this because they are the lifeblood of pay TV. Besides, SuperSport successfully bid for the live rights, just as the SABC could have.
However, the Boksβ home Tests could still be broadcast βdelayed liveβ on free-to-air television, according to SuperSport communications manager Clinton van der Berg.
βSuperSport has engaged with e.tv, having offered them the [SA-England] match on a delayed basis, and is awaiting a response,β
@Ben (Comment 61) : Francois Venter
@Chucky, yep Glenwood is a bit of a hookers breeding ground. Two of our 6 Boks were hookers, Don Walton was the first and best hooker in SA between 1964 and 1970 and John Allan the other. Jacques Taylor the hooker from 2011 is at the Bulls in the Under19 side and is another great hooking prospect. Some rugby brains also think that Shaun Adendorff should convert to hooker as he lacks the height and size for a modern day flank, only 185cm and 96kg. Unless he becomes and out and out fetcher.
@robdylan (Comment 72) : Thank you. I remember Muzi mentioned it. Of course. π
@Ben (Comment 61) : Francois Venter
@Ben (Comment 74) : yep Glenwood is a bit of a hookers breeding ground
*whistles*… π
@Ice (Comment 75) : re comment 72… is there an echo in here? π
@Rob, hahahahahah!!!
@Grasshopper (Comment 78) : π
@robdylan (Comment 77) : haha! Hahaha! Hahaha! Seems like it, ja! π
@robdylan (Comment 76) : You replied to the wrong person. I’m not quite into the schoolboy and hookers thing! π
@Ice (Comment 80) : Better late than never. Much appreciated. π
@Ben (Comment 81) : oh sorry π
@robdylan (Comment 83) : Don’t need those stuff on my rap sheet! π
@robdylan (Comment 76) : Senzo Mtshali also looked like he would be a good hooker,but he can’t throw to save his life
@robdylan (Comment 58) :
No worries.
Didnt mean anything by it. Was merely a passing comment.
Cheers.
@Ludz (Comment 85) : I’m surprised he’s not in Dawie Theron’s squad, in that case
@John Galt (Comment 86) : no probs mate. π
@Grasshopper (Comment 63) : Grasshopper was reading some of the posts in Rugby365 irt the game on Saturday against College some of you Glenwood supporters were really mean, terrible to Warren! my word if I was his parent I would pull him out of Glenwood! He is a school kid for goodness sake! I hope those very same posters that were ranting against Warren are doing the same at Hougaard for his brain fart π
@Grasshopper (Comment 41) : I was at Varsity 2 (Glenwood U15 Vs College U15)last Saturday and I have to say I loved it! It was great the parents were fun to banter with its the best clash I have had this year. However, there was a only hitch was that my son was bitten! He doesn’t whant to make a fuss, and also he sais in the melee and the speed of everything he sais he doesn’t trust himself to recognise the culprit. But he still had the teeth marcks when he came off! Since you know the coaches maybe you should just give a word of warning that young chap might not bite someone that will keep quiete next time and that is his Rugby carreer at the school gone. It was the U15C
π @Sharksmad β The Blogβs Dudette (Comment 90) : mommy’s boy…
The du Preez twins from Kearnsney are very impressive.
Hope they are looked after and kept in Natal.
The great wall of China and Putco bus.
Great to see some banter with class here. Same can’t be said of other websites…
Tyler Fisher is pure class & can be used at centre or wing. Baby Bok candidate for 2013 for sure.
Kearsney SHOULD completely dominate next year. They had nine Grd 11’s in their 1st XV & flyhalf Tedder is still in Grd 10.
Their 2nds & 3rds are also mostly Grd 11’s. Can’t be complacent though, that’s what cost them against Hilton & ruined their season.
@Fozzy, agreed Kearsney should be the early favourites to take the unofficial KZN title in 2013, but be warned Glenwood had an even better side on paper this year and they have come a little unstuck with all the pressure put on by Old Boys, parents and teachers (played 17, won 10, lost 5 and drawn 2). I mean they had 7 or 8 returning provincial players. If Kearsney can stay grounded they should have a great season. But again ALL of the top 5 (Westville, College, Glenwood, Kearsney and Michaelhouse) will be very competitive next year. Glenwood’s 2nd and 3rd’s are unbeaten in KZN and that is where many of our 1st team players for 2013 will come from. Our Under16A’s have only lost to Westville (5-12) and College (8-12) so close there too. They did beat Kearsney (26-10), Michaelhouse (32-14), DHS (15-12), Northwood (40-3), Affies (24-17), Port Natal (39-6) and Hilton 53-9 too. It’s going to be another humdinger of a season in KZN in 2013….
@The Blog Dudette, sorry to hear about the biting. If you know who the kid is you should report him to the headmaster. That sort of behaviour is not tolerated at Glenwood and any decent school. With regards to Warren Potgieter, yes some of the bloggers on 365 are very abusive and unfair on the kid. All kids make mistakes, but because he is relatively new and probably ousted some of the bloggers kids from the 1st team they attack him unfairly. They are not doing the school any favours with these sorts of remarks.
A few players could count themselves unlucky, Paverd, McHardy, Mxoli and Eibig of Westville, Le Roux Van Zyl of DHS, Reegan Smith of College and a couple of others. But boys, making Craven Week is not the be all and end all of your careers, if you work hard after school you can still make it, look at Marcel Coetzee and Shaun Adendorff as prime examples.
@Megatron (Comment 91) π exactly what he said when I saw teeth marks “mom u going to make me look like a mommy’s boy” so I ill willingly left it π
