…the Peter de Villiers roller coaster ride continues…
SuperSport have just confirmed that former Bok coach Peter de Villiers, summarily dumped at the end of his, shall we say, “interesting” four-year tenure after last year’s World Cup quarter-final exit, has been confirmed as Director of Rugby at the University of the Western Cape.
Most international coaches go on to doing something a little bit more glamorous with their time once stepping down from the Test arena, but after months of speculation (and more than a little whining in the media about not having a job) it appears that de Villiers has opted (or is that settled?) for playing a role in rugby development right down at the grass roots.
UWC placed third out of five teams in this year’s Varsity Shield competition, winning four of their eight matches. One can safely say for our dear friend PDivvy that from here, the only way is up! Good luck with the new job, mate… good to have you back on the payroll somewhere at least.

Did you know that Carel Du Plessis got the Bok coaching job while coach of UWC?? π
@wpw (Comment 1) : WOW… I didn’t realise Carel du Plessis had coached at any level prior to getting the Bok job. I mean, watching his team, you’d hardly say he had.
BTW, when did you become Jon Cardinelli’s lapdog? πΏ
@robdylan (Comment 2) :
Huh?? π β
I personally don’t like Cardinelli but I agreed with his tweet this morning.
Seems you think I have an agenda or something… π
@wpw (Comment 3) : Wes, after knowing you for as long as I have, I know you have no agenda other than to stir as much as possible π
Just remember what they say about lying down with dogs!
@robdylan (Comment 2) : @wpw (Comment 3) : Bunch of twits.. π

So that’s where the old coot wound up! Coach of the number one team in the world to…well ja…HAHAHAHAHAHA. That’s made my day.
@klempie (Comment 6) : bit of a fall from grace

More like resigned to….
So Ricky’s going back to varsity?

@klempie (Comment 10) :
I thought you might have some fun here.
@Pokkel (Comment 11) :

@klempie (Comment 9) :
I see one of your comments has been moderated. π π
@robdylan (Comment 2) : “Most international coaches go on to doing something a little bit more glamorous with their time once stepping down from the Test arena” – Jake White moved on to coack Stellenbosch Koshuis teams after winning the RWC ’07
Awww come on Rob! It’s not THAT bad! How about just changing the word “cadre” to “applicant” and let bygones be bygones?
@Megatron (Comment 14) : So if your theory plays out, the Spears will be winning the SA conference in 2016? π π
@klempie (Comment 16) : 2017 *
@klempie (Comment 17) : No…2016. Getting confused between general election intervals and RWC intervals. π
@Megatron (Comment 13) :
Carel du Plessis??
Andre Markgraaf…
Harry Viljoen…
But worse still is Rudi Stroolie who got a job at the Sharks!! Talk about a fall from grace!! π π
@wpw (Comment 19) : yeh…for the Sharks.
Good on Pdivvy for not being too big a man to coach a lowly Vodacom Shield side. Shows me his heart is first and foremost with rugby.
@Salmonoid (Comment 21) : π π
I hope there are some good player-coaches in the UWC side a la Barney, Victoria and JdV… π
@klempie (Comment 15) : “theory”? you’re jumping the gun in your futile attempt to come across witty π
fact: jake white only got a decent coaching job in 2012, a whole four years after winning the world cup.
@Megatron (Comment 24) : Yes. Which would imply that in 2016, Helium Pete will be winning the SA conference (like the Brumbies are winning the Aus conference) as head of the unfancied Spears. Capiche?
@klempie (Comment 24) : implication is only in your head maybe because pdv not being employed any where, gives you perverse satisfaction hehehe
you are what you are
I went to an evening last week at The Johannian, where Peter de Villiers was the guest speaker. What an awesome evening, I would prefer to spend some time in Peters company than some of the other ex Springbok coaches.
@Megatron (Comment 26) : The implication was that Jake is as bad (or as good) as Snorre because he coached Koshuis. Do you deny it?
@klempie (Comment 27) : @klempie (Comment 27) : no, the point was Springbok coaches can be sidelined by the powers that be (for whatever reason)this was brought about by this line from robβs βarticleβ
