English down plucky Barbarians (again)

The English dirt tracker side recorded an eight-try-to-four, 57-31 victory over the SA Barbarians (North) in Potchefstroom last night, but as was the case in Kimberley the week before, the scoreline possibly doesn’t reflect how competitive the hosts were on the night.

South African-born fullback Nick Abendanon scored three tries in a first half that saw the lead see-saw up until around the 23rd minute, when the visitors finally got on top and managed to stay there, taking a 31-10 lead into the half time break. They were not to score again, though, for the a good 20 minutes, with the Barbarians dotting down twice in that period, both times courtesy of scrumhalf Shaun Venter.

With the local back in the game, the vocal crowd started to get excited and egg them on, but it was the introduction of reserve back Jonny May that proved telling for England; the Gloucester man scored twice, with Anthony Allan also getting one. The ref awarded a penalty try to England on the final hooter too, after Barbarians wing Deon Scholtz had scored a late consolation for the hosts.

Barbarians (31):
Tries: Joubert Englebrecht, Shaun Venter (2), Deon Scholtz. Conversions: JC Roos (4). Penalty: Roos

England (57):
Tries: Nick Abendanon (3), Ben Morgan, Jonny May (2), Anthony Allen, penalty try. Conversions: Charlie Hodgson (7). Penalty: Hodgson

  • I reckon an SA A team would have thrashed this dirt tracker team!!

Something about England refusing to play an SA A team.

Probably wanted these games to try build some momentum πŸ˜†

  • They have leaked 57 points in two games against no name, slapped-together opponents. The most famous players out of both Baabaas teams were Danville Demas, who I thought retired long ago.

I know it was Barbarian-style rugby and all, but that is no defensive record to be proud of.

  • At least they won, I remember a Bok team of not too long ago being made to look stupid against midweek teams in the UK.

  • @Ben (Comment 4) : They never are, hence the term “dirt trackers”. But they are still Internationals playing Vodacom Cup players.

I am saying that the England midweek team’s defense has been crap. Do you disagree?

  • @rhineshark (Comment 9) :Hardly, Im saying they at least did not lose – which the Boks did regardless of who they played against. Remember those teams were also sans their National players and I remember one of the teams had to get in a 3rd or so team player from another franchise to play for them.

  • @Ben (Comment 24) : The Pumas, Griffons, Leopards, etc rarely contribute players to Super 15 squads – hence they play in the Vodacom cup, and come Currie Cup time they represent their teams in the B section

We lost to Sarries by one point. We need to remember we played away from home, at the end of a long season and to top it all off we played against 10 saffas!! 😈 πŸ˜‰

I’m not playing down the factors you mentioned, but we also lost because the team was kak.

    Deysel, Potgieter and Johnson
    Hargeaves and Bekker
