Let’s have a look at the player statistics from the second test against England, courtesy of our friends over at Verusco.

South Africa shaded the possession stakes overall, controlling the ball for 43 minutes against 37, exactly the same figures as the week before. England had to make more tackles (122 v 96), but the Boks’ success rate was much higher this week, while England’s was a fair bit worse (England 81%, SA 92%). The Boks conceded 12 penalties to England’s 13, losing 3 set pieces to England’s 5.

Marcell Coetzee was the best tackler by quite some distance, with 13 tackles and a 100% success rate. Eben Etzebeth, with 8 from 8, came second, with Morne Steyn and Francois HJougaard (7 from 7 each) were joint third. The only player to miss more than 1 tackle in the match was JP Pietersen, who missed 2 from 8 attempts.

Pietersen topped the metres gained stat, with 126, which was just ahead of Morne Steyn’s 120. Coetzee was third (and best of the forwards) with 82m. JP also made the most linebreaks, with 4 of the 6 in total that the team managed credited to him. Frans Steyn (5) made the most offloads, ahead of Bismarck du Plessis (2). Pierre Spies (9) and Frans Steyn (7) made the most passes outside the halfbacks.

The two locks were the work horses at ruck time, with Etzebeth hitting 27 and Juandre Kruger 24. Willem Alberts and Jannie du Plessis (22 each) were joint third. Pietersen hit the most ruck amongst the backs, with 11.

Etzebeth, Beast Mtawarira and Coetzee each conceded two penalties but with the error rate so low this week, it doesn’t seem fair to single out anyone especially, since no player was credited with more than 3 individual errors in total across the metrics we look at (penalties, missed tackles, lost possession).

Most Valuable Player is also not that straight forward this week, given that a few people almost stood out (stats-wise) with nobody really being head and shoulders above the rest. On the balance of these unmbers, though, we’ll give it to JP Pietersen, for his fine work with ball in hand. Honourable mentions go to Spies and Coetzee, with Eben Etzebeth our official runner up.

  • I am not sure where Verusco got Morne’s 120m from – rugbystats has him making 51m with ball in hand.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 1) : Sideways or Straight meters? 😆

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 2) : Probably one of his better games with ball in hand I have seen – but still don’t recall him making that many metres

  • I am glad to see that Coetzee is keeping up the high work rate with the boks as he does with the Sharks. He is not the flashiest player on the field but he really brings a lot to the squad. I just wonder what will happen if Schala is back?

  • I was SO looking forward to these to shut a few bokssupporters up about Marcell “slacking” down! Like Viking says – he is not a flashy player, but a workhorse of NOTE!

  • so, in hindsight, both MArcell and (particularly) Eben should have got higher ratings.

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : Eben definitely stepped up from the first test

  • @robdylan (Comment 9) : I did not wanna say anything out of fear of beiong accused of not watching the 14 other players on the field! 😆

BUT – I also know you don’t take stats into account when doing the ratings.
