You’ve got to hand it to John Smit – the former Bok skipper is generally a step or two ahead of the game. As part of an ambitious plan to raise funds for his chosen charities ahead of his testimonial game tomorrow night, the big hooker and his ragtag “Barney’s Army” have kidnapped the Sharks mascot, Sharkie.
The following letter appeared on the Sharks Facebook page yesterday:
The goal here is that fans should contribute to Sharkie’s “ransom” by donating to one of Smitty’s chosen charities, the Players Fund, the Bobbe Bear Foundation and LIV Village. We think this is a great idea and anyone who feels able to donate can do so via this link on the Berney’s Army website.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an option to pay extra for them to not return Sharkie.

Maybe they will stop feeding him pies and he will trim down to his old sharkie self. ๐
On a serious note, I doff my cap to Barney. Well played Sir, What you are doing for charity is awesome.
See you friday
