The Sharks website has confirmed that Ryan Kankowski will join Japanese club Toyota Verblitz on a 6-month deal, between August 2012 and February 2013.

The Hoff, who is still contracted to the Sharks until October 2013, has been granted a sabbatical, allowing him to experience rugby in Japan (while earning a shedload of money in the process). He will thus miss the upcoming Currie Cup campaign, but will return in time to play for the Sharks in the 2013 Super Rugby tournament.

Assuming Keegan Daniel remains involved with the Springboks for the upcoming Rugby Championship, the Sharks will look to Tera Mtembu to play at 8 during the Currie Cup, a great opportunity to allow the young Sevens Bok to develop further in the 15-man game.

  • I cannot help but say: “he will be Big in Japan!”

  • big loss for the Currie Cup, but Kanky needs a bit of a break form the setup, I reckon.

  • Kanko in full flight is still a great thing, maybe this stint will give him back some confidence ahead of SupeRugby.

  • he hasn’t shown anything more than being a flat track bully, he can’t play 7, he disappears in tight games. he should’ve been a wing..

he is lucky he is going to be playing next to jerome kaino! he might learn to man-up.

  • I think he’ll do well there. I just hope there’s room for him when he comes back – he offers something different from your usual no. 8.

  • @Megatron (comment 5) I seem to remember one Mr McCaw experiencing a handoff from the Hoff that might lead him to disagree with you. I’ll grant you that he’s not the most physical 8, but he’s certainly proved his worth over the years. He’s going to be missed.

  • @CDRhino (Comment 8) : one handoff, really? have you seen the dean mumm hand off of marcell coetzee, how does kanko’s one compare?

only in durban by only those who like to see their 8th man in “full flight” 😆

  • Comment 9, posted at 21.06.12 16:13:21 by Megatron Reply

  • @Megatron (comment 9). That’s one that sticks out. Mumm’s was good but it looked better because Coetzee caught him so fast that he wasn’t ready when he got there ;-).
We Durbanites do enjoy watching the flying Afro in full flight though.

  • Sorry guys I’m new to blogging I’d relii like an opinion on something!,, with kanko leaving and stander now going to play in the misrible ireland do you not feel we losing lots of talent I meen sitting in the back of my mind is brussow who sais he’s not next??? Unless somehow he makes heynekes sqaud for the 4 nations any body agree or got opinions??

  • @lloyd (Comment 11) : Dude! Spellcheck!
You do have a point though, but we can’t tell them to say no to that much money. Would you? We have the great position in S.A. that we always seem to find gems in the ashes. We lost Schalla and Juan, and found Marcell and Brussouw and Siya to step up into the gaps, and with Tera ready to step up when Kanko leaves, the gems just keep coming

Kanko is back next year, Heinrich will not go anywhere and we still have Schalk, Kolisi and loads of other losies – so chillax! The world is not coming to an end! 😉

  • I really am proud of SA we have such great rugby talent and its phenomenal how our youngsters come through 🙂 really think Marcel is a great player would kill to c him beef up a bit and play at 8 we are not short of open siders and I think kolisi could fit anywhere in the back row 🙂 thoughts are endless just glad we playing good rugby 🙂 on the lighter side when will frans steyn lose that winter beard and weight lol I rate him as the top 12 in world rugby at the moment 🙂

  • Comment 15, posted at 21.06.12 20:10:39 by lloyd Reply

  • @lloyd (Comment 15) : Marcell is actually a 8. Doesn’t really need to beef up. He is a very big and strong boy.

Welcome to the site mate. Hope to see more of you..

  • Thanks a lot great to be here 🙂 I’ve always taken an intrest in loose foward as I played openside for dhs and then glenwood a few years back 🙂 talents immense in south africa yes very impressed with marcell I think he cud excell at 8th man and can’t wait to see weather brussow can be brought back into the team and become a regular fixture 🙂 will be inresting to see if schalla will be at 7 or 6 and duane at 8 or 7 with schalks way of playing he probebly only got a few seasons left in him

  • @lloyd (Comment 19) : Believe me when I tell you Marcell was awesome last year in the Vodacom Cup when he played at 8. That guy has got some serious talent.

I hope Burger plays at 8 for the Boks when he’s fit again. Even if just to get Spies away from there! 😉

  • @lloyd (Comment 19) : Also keep a close eye on Francois Kleinhans on Friday night. Loads of talent there too. Plays to the ground. Pretty good fetcher.

  • Would be good if heyneke had a chat and told the unions where he wants or thinks the players future is at brussow and marcell at 6 willem and shcalk at 7 and duane (spies hope not big for nothing show pony ) at 8. Juan prob wnt return 🙂 other players I rate are kolisi f. Louw 🙂 think they our future 🙂 just worried about our 15 fullbak we reli need to decide who we want dar

  • Sharks got so much of the loose forward talent kleinhans is fantastic seen him play and looks like talent 🙂 psdt I also rate as a lock with experianse and growth he could be great

  • @lloyd (Comment 23) : Such a tragedy that Smith’s career was full injury setbacks. One of the best blindside flankers around.

FLouw is 27 now, not that old yet but really don’t see him in the Boks’ future plans..

  • @lloyd (Comment 24) : Sharks have the best loose forward depth in SupeRugby I reckon. Then there is still a guy called Tera running around. Very decent 8th man. Hopefully we see him in the Currie Cup..

  • I also don’t buy the story of a fetch is just there to fetch a beer!! Yes lawas have changed but the game has remained the same:). Not that I don’t credit marcell he’s one guy I enjoy to see play but guys like brussow ma caw pockok waburton they can turn games around!and its not like they not good footballers eitha they can all tackel carry the ball the only dis advantage for brussow is line out jumping but with locks and a 7 and 8 you dnt need anything more do you??? And to tell me a fetchers don’t work anymore and every player can fetch look at bismark week in week out he’s there stealing and contesting at the tackle area ! I believe brussow belongs in the team if his form warrents it and he makes a contribution 🙂 some 1 like skalla he is very uprite and is a great example of th way heyneke wants it 🙂 just feel brussow is an immense talent

  • Comment 27, posted at 21.06.12 23:21:34 by lloyd Reply

  • Brussows biggest set back right now is that he’s at the cheetahs imagine him at bulls or at stomers I won’t say sharks coz we have got such depth !! Our depth will be tested tho with kanko on a sabbatical and botes a bit mature now !! Can’t wait to see deysel and kleinhans and terror what a site that will be but yes please I’m begging you heyneke brussow must be ther in your 4N squad still curious to see if the two big boy stomers will be back by then

  • Comment 28, posted at 21.06.12 23:26:25 by lloyd Reply

  • @lloyd (Comment 27) : I also rate Brussouw very highly. Was shocked when the squad was announced and he wasn’t in it. I think the All Blacks will kill us at the breakdowns if Brussouw doesn’t play. We need someone who plays to the ground. Marcell, Alberts and Spies are all ball carriers. Brussouw is the best we have in SA at playing to the ground..

  • If you have a good counter rucking system or/and tackle-support system, you can get away with not having a fetcher. You see various players effecting turnovers at rucks, so I don’t think that a single position should be singled out to do the job of “fetching”.

  • Not a bad move because I really think Kanko needs game time. Sitting on the Sharks or Boks larger training squad isnt going to help him. In the last 2 years he has really worked hard on his tight game and I for one thought he was playing well but then got injured. He has lots to offer so hope he comes back with renewed confidence much like Peter Grant has.

  • Well if the Jaque Fourie experiment taught us anything it`s that he`ll be raking it in to such an extend over there that he probably won`t come back.

  • So just to take stock here.

This CC we`ll be without Kankow, Michalak, Botes? and all the bokke?

I`m all for giving the young guys a chance but is it fair to expect a CC from them in their first season?

So we don`t make the play offs in Super Rugby and we`re entering a ” re-building phase ” as well.

Luckily the Lions should be a shambles in the CC if Mitchell decide to leave and the Bulls lost just as many guys so we`ll probably make the play offs again.
