South Africa take on England in the third and final test match in Port Elizabeth this afternoon, having already wrapped up the series with two victories in the first two tests. The third match though, is touted as being anything but a dead rubber, with both teams hungry for a win.

The Springboks have been forced into a number of changes for this match, with injuries ruling out Pat Lambie and Willem Alberts, while Frans Steyn is not available for the clash. Gio Aplon, Jacques Potgieter and Wynand Olivier replace the three respective players, with Potgieter making his Bok debut in the process.

England have lost not only their captain, Robshaw, but also inspirational scrumhalf Youngs, with the team looking somewhat depleted and patched together after a series of four tough encounters thus far. The English will pull out all the stops to prevent the Boks putting a tenth successive victory into the record books.

South Africa: 15 Gio Aplon, 14 JP Pietersen, 13 Jean de Villiers, 12 Wynand Olivier, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Morné Steyn, 9 François Hougaard, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Jacques Potgieter, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Juandré Kruger, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

Replacements: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Werner Kruger, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Ryan Kankowski, 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21 Elton Jantjies, 22 Bjorn Basson.

England: 15 Alex Goode, 14 Chris Ashton, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Manusamoa Tuilagi, 11 Ben Foden, 10 Toby Flood, 9 Danny Care, 8 Thomas Waldrom, 7 James Haskell, 6 Tom Johnson, 5 Geoff Parling, 4 Tom Palmer, 3 Dan Cole, 2 Dylan Hartley (captain), 1 Joe Marler.

Replacements: 16 Lee Mears, 17 Paul Doran Jones, 18 Mouritz Botha, 19 Phil Dowson, 20 Lee Dickson, 21 Owen Farrell, 22 Brad Barritt.

Date: Saturday, 23 June
Kick-off: 17.05 (15.05 GMT)
Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
Expected weather: It seems that the rain may well hold off in the afternoon which will reach a high of 21°C, dropping to 13°C. Windy at times, but then it is PE.
Referee: Steve Walsh (Australia)
Assistant referees: Nigel Owens (Wales), John Lacey (Ireland)
TMO: Giulio De Santis (Italy)

  • Been talking about Bizzy’s throw in’s to the line out as been under par….but the S15 stats show that Bizzy and Strauss have very similar stats with Ralaphele way behind…and not just that…Bizzy way leading with turnovers with Strauss 2nd and Strauss way ahead with meters gained with Bizzy 2nd and Ralaphele way behind as well…
    So statistically Bizzy rightful start…lol

  • I am very please to see Potgieter start with Alberts injured and Kanko on the bench…we lose soooooo much physicality with Keegan and gain nothing…cannot afford that in test rugby…
Even our scrums suffer when Keegan packs in…

  • Notice Waldrom isn’t singing the English anthem – perhaps he still feels too much like a New Zealander or he doesn’t know the words yet.

  • Let me kick in the opponents 22 and they mark it. Come on. Get Elton on the field for a change. Even if it doesn’t work it is something different.

  • Well now Morné’s kak kicking did cost us the game. Why not give it to Pienaar earlier. Disappointing game.

  • Maybe Morné should get some plain black boots again. If he can’t kick then he must go.

    Hmmm

  • Our halfback Combo was absolute rubbish.

Houghaard and those bleeding kicks from the ruck, and Morné…..

I’ll say it though, strooimeisie Timotei’s best game in Springbok colours.

All the blame for this loss I lay squarely on the shoulders of that pink and blue halfback combo.

And Potgieter…potgieter what? Only thing worse than his supposed burly runs was Whiskey Bladen’s anticipation of his supposed ball crashing.

    Can’t select Pollard just yet…

Let him play a couple of Currie Cup games first 😆 😆 😆

    @FireTheLooser (Comment 119) :

Not happy with the Blue Bulls in the team at all. Pathetic performance by the lot of them, outside of Wynand who had an excellent game.

    I understand you like Potgieter…

    But he sucked.

Like I told Rob the other day… It’s Heyneke just handing out debuts to Blue Bulls. Jacques won’t be there much longer. He’ll be out of the BB’s starting line-up before long, because he’s simply not as good as he’s being made out to be.

  • Our FH problem is the least of our worries.

We’ve got Lambie, Goosen, Jantjes, Grant, Pollard.

At SH we have Pienaar. And nobody else. We’ve got problems at SH, serious problems.

  • @Franshark (Comment 124) :

I was being sarcastic about Pollard.

He played alright, but needs to improve a heck of a lot to even make a CC squad. His decision making and general control was no good. Can be forgiven considering his age, and that he has a further 2 years eligibility at U20 level.

I’m for Goosen. He’s a freak. If he stays fit, we’ve got a match winner. He can probably be the best goal-kicker in world rugby also. Kicks well above 90% (hardly ever misses), and when he does miss, he pretty much always slots the next one.

  • @robdylan (Comment 128) : No Morning Steyn, maybe top 6?

When his place kicking is off, he’s a rather below average flyhalf.

But that list does make for sad reading 😯 , and then to see the FH talent coming through now, what happened?

  • Both hogaard and morne had a very below par series and if they don’t improve quikly I think the booos will keep coming!! Really a below average preformance from most of the team I don’t know if england wanted it more or the loss of 3 key players affected us I have no idea it just was nt acceptable. I can’t even remember 1 player of ours putting there hand up!!! And brussow needs to be back in the team !!! Please coach
