Not such a good game this time around, with the ratings reflective of a poor performance that netted a 14-all draw.

1) Beat Mtawarira. Held his own at scrum time, but failed to assert himself in any other areas. 5/10
2) Bismarck du Plessis. When measured against his own high standard, this was a hugely disappointing performance. 5/10
3) Jannie du Plessis. Probably the best of the Boks’ tight forwards. Jannie capped off a good series with a better-than-average showing. 5/10
4) Eben Etzebeth. Failed to live up to the hype for a third week running. The lock combination is still young, but as a pair are failing to dominate. 4/10
5) Juandre Kruger. A pretty quiet performance in a pack that failed to dominate. Lineouts were messy too. 4/10
6) Marcell Coetzee. Very strong work on defence, but tended to get caught a little betwixt and between the fetcher and carrier roles. 6/10
7) Jacques Potgieter. Not a bad debut at first, but started to drop off the pace later. Perhaps match fitness an issue? 5/10
8) Pierre Spies. A horrible performance from a man who should be setting the example. 4/10

9) Francois Hougaard. Almost single-handedly destroyed the backline with atrocious service and inaccurate kicking. Simply cannot start the next test. 2/10
10) Morne Steyn. Only slightly better than his halfback mate, which isn’t saying much. Options and execution were dire, with place kicking woes again removing his only real usefulness to the team. 3/10
11) Bryan Habana. Solid, solid, solid – did what he could with the scraps that came his way. 6/10
12) Wynand Olivier. To his credit, tried to do what he could with what little ball he got. Straightened the line nicely on attack and even made a half break or two. 6/10
13) Jean de Villiers. Looked a little lost and didn’t really know how to get his troops to perform on the day. No opportunities with ball in hand whatsoever. 5/10
14) JP Pietersen. About the only decent performance on the day, JP is in great form and a real threat both on attack and defence. 7/10
15) Gio Aplon. Did reasonably well in a game that did not really suit his strengths. A brave, committed player despite his stature. 6/10

16) Adriaan Strauss. Slightly better than Bismarck, this time around, without doing much to write home about. 5/10
17) Werner Kruger. Werner WHO-ger? Not on long enough to be rated.
18) Flip van der Merwe. Looked decent and added some fire. Perhaps worth a start? 6/10
19) Ryan Kankowski. His best test showing in many a season, Hoff added real thrust on attack and also put in some big hits on defence. 7/10
20) Ruan Pienaar. Much, much better than Hougaard and surely SA’s best scrumhalf on current form? 7/10
21) Elton Jantjies – Unused. Pity – he couldn’t have been worse than Steyn.
22) Bjorn Basson – Unused.

  • Can’t really disagree with anything… Morne Steyn has to get his kicks over, if he can’t he has to be dropped, simple as that… Why didn’t Pienaar take the last kick?

  • Marcel did a ton of work as usual – 19 tackles and 99 metres.

  • At least Jantjes was saved the embarrassment of having to save Mornรฉ’s sinking ship.

Kinda puts HM’s whole combo theory to boot, with an 8,9,10 and 12 Pink Nulle combo effectively killing the Boks.

  • I thought Oivier was far and away the best back. He made ground and kept Tualigi in check.

    Halfbacks were woeful.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 4) : I have to agree about Olivier although I never thought I would say it. Probably his best performance in a Bok jersey.

  • Good ratings Rob! I do believe that Morne and Hougaard deserve the same rating….you can chose whether it should be a 2 or 3. They were truely horrible on Saturday.

I think the English team should feel ashamed that they didn’t win this game.

  • So Leon Schuster is reportedly very upset over attempts to pirate his latest movie; Mad Buddies.

I must admit that I share his dismay – what does it say about our nation that people actually consider his stuff worthy of the risk and effort of pirating?

One would have hoped that SA would have graduated beyond bodily functions and racial stereotyping as humour by now.

If the ‘people’ didn’t like it he wouldn’t make the movies. It says just as much about the fans than it says about Schuster.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 24) : Touchรฉ.

One of the most surreal moments of my life was wondering into a store in a mall in Kuala Lampur selling DVD’s of questionable authenticity to see a sizeable group of Malaysian men huddled around a tv screen laughing uncontrollably. Mr. Bones was playing. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • I believe Aplon and Wynand (surprizingly) deserve 7…

Who here agrees that we actually have too many good loosies at the Sharks?? I mean what is our best combo?? – i personally prefer pace to SIZE:

    6. Daniel
    7. Coetzee
    8. Kankowski

    19. Alberts as impact player

  • Shuster is not needed to perpetuate racial sterotyping, that happens naturally, going to be with us for a long, long time still.

  • I think Hougaard is a victim of HM trying to force the game plan onto his players. HM’s game plan needs a tactical kicker like Fourie du Preez which is just not Hougie. He looks uncomfortable.

He should either adapt the game plan to the players strengths or pick Ruan as scrumhalf.

  • @robdylan (Comment 30) : hougaard is not kak, horses for courses…it’s no coincidence that heyneke after the match said “if plan A does not work, why should we go to plan B” meyer believes his plan is invincible and if the team is not making headway, someone is not executing right because the plan is FLAWLESS…

go check his post-match interviews, it’s the players not being accurate at the breakdown in durban, in joburg the players let in sft tries, in PE the marcell, kruger, etzebeth, potgieter were “inexperienced at playing TEST rugby in rainy conditions”…

    all the players fault.

  • Comment 31, posted at 26.06.12 14:38:11 by Megatron Reply

  • @Megatron (Comment 31) : I can forgive Hougaard for the poor tactical kicking, because that clearly isn’t his forte and expecting a player like him to play that sort of game is just stupid.

I cannot forgive him for the awful passing, though. Passing is a scrumhalf’s stock in trade and there is never an excuse for not getting it right. You can’t blame the game plan for being unable to find the men outside you.

Note also that I’m not saying he’s a kak player… I’m saying he has a kak game.
