Kiwi flyhalf Carlos Spencer has apparently been appointed as interim head coach after the Lions suspended countryman John Mitchell last week.
The Lions return to Super Rugby this weekend with a tough local derby against the Stormers at Newlands. Having come off an unexpected win against the Sharks in their last outing and with the Cape side still unsettled due to injury, one could have been forgiven for thinking that the Lions may have been in with just the narrowest chance of causing an upset.
The “player power”, though, that drove a bunch of unnamed senior players to hand over a list of grievances against the coach, sees all that disrupted as Mitchell will be forced to watch the last three games from the sidelines. It’s not the first time that Mitchell has been in hot water for speaking his mind too freely and calling a steaming pile of cr*p exactly that, but one wonders exactly what the Lions players expect their coach to say, given the load of dross they’ve dished up for large portions of this year’s campaign.
Forwards coach Johan Ackerman will support Spencer as assistant coach.

I would really like to know what exactly happened behind the scenes at the Lions.
Sharks needs Spencer to come down to Durbs and coach the Sharks back line.
@Pokkel (Comment 1) : Easy.
Mitch is just covering his bases. Just in case SARU decides to let the Lions play next year, he’s trying to get himself released with a golden handshake so he can keep his mitts on the Hawera Cup. 😈
@Bokhoring (Comment 2) : we need david campese to coach our backs.
Saw something in the news about Butch James getting half his salary docked because of his suspension.
So not a lot of motivation for these lion boys this week.
I predict an easy bonus point victory for the Stormers this weekend.
@Original Pierre (Comment 5) : I remember a few years ago the lions fired loffie (was it loffie?) midway through the season and they klapped the brumbies very next game. who knows? also when we fired Putt midway, we also won the next game. stranger things have happened
@jako (Comment 6) : So the Lions already fired Mitch before the Sharks game? 😈
@FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : 👿
@Original Pierre (Comment 5) :
No :p one of the thing i hear is that they players were unhappy with the game plan that was being used by Mitch . So against they Sharks they decided to change it … and like they say . the rest is history .
im not very confident . but who knows what to expect …
@FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : lol
@Zibbie (Comment 9) :
Hmmm, well let’s see if the players’ gameplan comes off against the Stormers.
@JustPlainSHARK (Comment 11) :
wont be placing bets on the lions though … 😉
Heard this morning on the radio that Ackerman will be the interim head coach?
@JarsonX (Comment 13) :
i think we are trying to confuse Province …
@JarsonX (Comment 13) : The snoiL players will like him, he won’t be hard on them and generally applauds mediocrity. 😈
Heard him on Boots & All a while back saying that losing 4 or 5 of your own lineouts aren’t bad at all. 😯
@jovner (Comment 4) : * triple LIKE*
@Zibbie (Comment 9) : I still think my theory is closer to the truth.
Sportsbet offered massive odds on the lions upsetting the sharks so Mitch and Plum struck a deal. .
That`s my story and I`m sticking to it!
@Original Pierre (Comment 17) : That might have been Mitch’s golden handshake – courtesy of the Sharks. 🙂
