New Lions coach Johan Ackermann has named his side to face the Stormers in Cape Town this weekend.

Pat Cilliers is out injured, meaning a start at tight-head for former Griquas man Jacobie Adriaanse, with JC Janse van Rensburg starting on the other side of the scrum. CJ van der Linde needs to pass a late fitness test to be included on the bench.

15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Butch James, 11 Anthonie Volminck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Tian Meyer, 8 Joshua Strauss (captain), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg

Substitutes: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 CJ van der Linde/Ruaan Dreyer, 18 Ruan Botha, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Michael Bondesio, 21 Waylon Murray, 22 Ruan Combrinck

  • Isn’t Ruan Dreyer a Lock? Would be interesting to see him as a prop…he’s a great talent, very physical. Am i thinking of someone else?

    I think i’m confused…or was he a looseforward? I’m confused… 🙂

I think i’m thinking of that guy that played Baby Boks lock last year, and got injured this year…forgot his name.

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) : No i know Ruan…he’s played Lions at least 5 times this year already and Baby Boks 5 this year…there was another guy…i will try and search for his name, i remember he was given some big reviews by some.

  • Ruan Venter…That’s him. Wonder what he’s doing now…probably injured, again.

He was lock partner for Eben Etzebeth when Eben played u/20. Eben at 5.

  • @JJR (Comment 6) :

Heck of a player… Willemse comes with more reputation, but on what Venter did last year, I’d say he’s the better player.

Just sad he’s been injured the whole damn time.

He did make the final U20 trials this year, but missed out on the final squad.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 7) : Nice to get some confirmation…hopefully we see him play again this year sometime…i wonder if The Sharks have their eyes open and are in contact with the agents of players like Willemse and Venter…Sharks don’t have any “real” enforcer in our current squad and obviously the Lions are in a bad place, they would take up any opportunity to play for The Sharks in a heartbeat, Stormers won’t be looking thanks to Etzebeth and Elstadt…I reckon Bulls could gun for Willemse, but we will see what happens.

    Hey Rob.

I see Freddie Michelak is back with the Sharks after the French internationals?

I thought he wasn’t coming back because his contract ends 1 July 2012?

  • @JJR (Comment 8) : Ruan Venter is fit again and has played in the U21 warm up games. IMO he is the best prospect of the Lions current young lock riches. He, Willemse,Ruan Botha and Oosthuizen, who they seem to be turning into a blind side flanker, are all still U20. Venter was injured at last years u20 WC.

Depending on who gets opportunities at senior level the Lions U21’s should have a formidable pack this year with the u20 hooker Mark Pretorious. Based on the eligible players who played Vodacom cup I can’t see the SA U20 8th man Fabian Booysen getting a starting position in the U21 side

  • Come on my Lions. Just don’t embarrass yourself in Cape Town

  • @Zibbie (Comment 10) : Can’t say i didn’t see it coming…Bulls know what they want and go for it, wish Sharks weren’t so slow to pick up such a talent. @steve (Comment 11) : Venter will no be a Lion for long, i will be very surprised if he doesn’t leave for another Union at the end of this season, IMO. Hope he chooses Black and White…he is a young Johann Ackermann, same build, same mentality, very similar.

  • @steve (Comment 11) : Booysen was worst Baby Bok this year(was alright in the final)…can’t believe he kept being selected, he is so average, IMO.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 9) : ja, I thought so too. Guess I was wrong.

Not like the Sharks ever share this sort of information with their dumb fans 🙂

  • Cilliers a good player. Unlucky to miss out to Kruger.

  • @JJR (Comment 13) : All of these young locks are still U20 and are contracted until the end of their U21 year ie 2013. That doesn’t prevent an offer being made by another union but the Lions would have an option to match it. The critical issue is whether the Lions will have the means to do so especially if they are not playing Super rugby next year.

I am also not sure how Booysen made the U20 side ahead of even some of the Lions other U20 loosies – Ruan Lerm in particular. Lerm and de Wit both played Vodacom Cup ahead of him as did Etienne Oosthuizen who even got some Super rugby exposure,
