Ton up for Wynand

He may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but you’ve got to give credit to Bulls centre Wynand Olivier for his staying power, if nothing else!

The former Affies pupil will lead his team onto the field at Loftus this weekend, to celebrate the notable achievement of 100 Super Rugby caps for the side. It’s one that not many players go onto achieve these days, what with the lure of the Euro, Pound and Yen cutting short many a career. The ridiculous workload placed on players only increases as the competition is extended from year to year as well, meaning burnout and injury are likely to put paid to the ambitions of many other players aiming to emulate Olivier’s feat. That’s perhaps a separate discussion, but it should, at least, put into context what a significant milestone this is for the player.

Olivier has had to endure a fair bit of criticism over the years, admittedly from people who don’t like the Bulls overly much and despite failing thus far to ever quite settle at test level, only a fool would deny the huge impact that he’s had for the Bulls at Super Rugby level, where he has been, pretty much, a consistently good performer for going on eight seasons now. While questions around his style (and even suitability for the inside centre position, given his reluctance to pass) continue to persist, one has to concede that whatever he does in the blue jersey works pretty well for the most part and they certainly wouldn’t have backed him to do it 100 times over if they didn’t back his abilities.

It’s a bit of a sore point for many of us, I guess, but they’ve got three Super Rugby titles to help justify their faith in him, which is a damn sight more than any of Olivier’s detractors can claim!

So well done, Wynand! I haven’t forgotten 2006 and the part that you played in using Rudolf’s Straueli’s gullibility as a way to up your own salary at the Bulls – nor have I forgotten the way you added insult to injury by shredding us to pieces in a Currie Cup game in Durban the same year. That said, I respect what you’ve achieved in this great game that we all love so much.

  • Come-on guys…..Timotei Meisiekind is playing her 100th game.

  • It takes someone with very little self respect to shoot down Wynand Olivier on reaching such a huge achievement

Legend, one of the greatest domestic players ever in the history of Currie Cup

the monday before last i was busy vigorously pushing tin @ the gym when wynand & francois hougaard walked in and started working out on the bench next to me, i nearly burst out laughing when i thought of the s.hit that gets said about the bloke on forums and there he was not more than 2 metres from me.
