Botes Ulster move appears to be off

Courtesy of our friends at the Front Row Union, we’ve learned that Jacques Botes’ rumoured move to join up with Johann Muller and Ruan Pienaar in Belfast seems to have hit the skids.

Ulster, who have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years since opting to pack their team with former Sharks, contested the Heineken Cup Final this year and were understood to be on the verge of adding Botes to their squad ahead of the 2012/13 European season. With Pedrie Wannenberg having left the club to continue his career in France, Muller was understood to be pushing hard for the suits at Ravenhill to make a move for his old friend Botes.

Our info is that Ulster’s first choice, though, was former Auckland Blues flanker Nick Williams and that they had been on the verge of signing the player when he failed a medical. Only after terms had (verbally) been agreed with Botes, according to the rumour, did Williams then pass a subsequent, independent, medical examination, meaning his move was back on (and Botes’ off).

All still speculation, of course, but the way we have it, it’s currently Nick Williams who’ll be on his way to Ulster (from Aironi in Italy) and not Jacques Botes. We’ll wait and see whether the latter sticks around for the Currie Cup, or has other overseas options in his pocket.

  • Disappointing for Botes but Williams is probably a better fit for Ulster. Williams did sign for Ulster a couple of weeks ago.
