All Blacks lose their best player

Good news looms Monday lunchtime (NZT) for all supporters of sides that play the All Blacks. A press conference has been called by the New Zealand Rugby Union in which it is anticipated that they will confirm the departure of star All Black midfielder Sonny Bill Williams.

Sonny Bill Williams, is set to make the announcement on his future at a press conference in Hamilton, where he will be joined by All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster and Chiefs coaches Dave Rennie and Wayne Smith.

The good-oil indicates that SBW will be heading overseas to play club rugby in Japan before making a return to rugby league in Australia next year.

It is expected that SBW will announce his decision to play for Japan’s Top League team Panasonic in a 10-match deal said to be worth between $(NZD) 800,000 – 1.7 million.

The Japanese Top League season begins on August 31, and runs until the end of January, after which Williams is expected to sign with NRL team the Sydney Roosters.

The return of Williams to his original code is bound to be coupled with plenty of fan-fare especially with the wounds of Williams departure from Canterbury Bankstown still raw. Williams controversially walked out on Canterbury mid-season in 2008, joining French rugby club Toulon on his successful quest to make the RWC All Black squad.

He was part of last year’s Rugby World Cup winning All Black team, and proved an integral part of the All Blacks in their recent drubbing of Ireland in the three-Test series last month.

Williams, will be at the end of a one-year deal with Super Rugby franchise the Chiefs at the conclusion of this year’s Super season.

He is also expected to continue his boxing career.

Williams has always done plenty to divide the New Zealand rugby public and this news tomorrow is bound to add further fuel to the fire.

However, I am sure our paths will cross again – some time soon.

  • I thought Bryce Lawrence was their best player.

  • I have lost respect for SBW. His attitude lately has been shit to say the least. We don’t need his ‘I’m bigger than the game’ attitude in union any more. Good riddance and don’t bother coming back.

Seriously though, their best player probably Carter or Mccaw. Certainly not SBW with his one trick.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 6) : what “attitude”? i would put it to you that bismarck _ his brother have far much shittier attitudes than sbw! do you also want them to leave your “union”?

  • That is my opinion Mega. Feel free to differ. He doesn’t love rugby he just loves himself.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 10) : And I agree with that even more!

He’s like going around and trying to show that he can do anything he wants (and I will agree – very well) but none of it is a passion or great love.

He is like a friend of mine…now she plays golf, the next she is canooing, then she buys an off-road…then mountain_biking….not for the love of it, but just to say she has done it..

I find him a little self-centred…SB does what SB wants and I find his decisions somewhat immature – like a attention seeking teenager trying to be way-out…

    And that is MY opinion.

  • SBW continues to polarise opinion even here on SW

At the end of the day he is a wonderful footballer currently in the form of his life …. he was sublime in the last Test against Ireland and scored a wonderful try on Saturday against the Crusaders only to lose the match in the final play of the match.

I’m sure the All Blacks will snap him up in 18 months time ….. there is daylight between him, Nonu and the rest at 12!

@Big Fish (Comment 7) : Hahaha … hardly a one trick pony any more! 😉

  • So the SBW roadshow is set to move on to a new town. 😥 😆

He sure is a marketed piece of meat, his agent must love him – good at sports he may be, but he seems to be a gimmick who’s marketing campaign is changed as soon as anyone gets to used to him – kinda like OutSurance 🙄

On the boxing front – When exactly will he be fighting a real heavy weight boxing opponent, his boxing career seems to be the biggest gimmick in his sporting repertoire? 😈

Anyways, his departure does not make the AB’s any less of a threat, now if Carter had to leave, then I’d give a sigh of relief. 😉

  • @Ben (Comment 17) : no argues that fact…that’s not the issues we have though. Because of what I perceive him. to be and not having not much love for the game I love, I say goód riddance. But ja, I’m sure someone will welcome him back with open arms and by doing so, don’t help him on the right path.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 15) :
Like Morne’s article once said; he has done wonders for the crowds and even for raising the profile of off-loading in rugby – as opposed to just bashing the dude in front of you if you are big. So, I think he has been great for rugby in that sense.

However, I do think he is a limited player (albeit still above-average as a 12), and not quite as good as the hype.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 22) : Agreed

He has however grown in his two seasons at Super Rugby level …. at the minute he is on fire – I wish him well!

I think the announcement today will just be his move to Japan …. the NRL part of it will come some time later.

I don’t know who we will have to replace him! … apart from Nonu 😕

  • @Ice (Comment 21) : rugby is a professional sport & no longer that amateur game controlled by idealistic men with delusions of grandeur about how important they are. you think it is sensible for sanzar to extend super rugby up to now in their quest to extract more money out of newscorp while disregarding the wellbeing of players?

does that translate to loving union in your book?

do you think john o’neill loves union?

the NZRU made money off SBW & he made money off them, simple BUSINESS.

  • @Ice (Comment 20) : i don’t know what you regard as “fooling around” but here is what the people who have been DEALING with sbw have to say:

“If Sonny Bill Williams stays and
plays rugby in New Zealand at this next decision juncture or he goes away, we will be very comfortable with the interaction we’ve had with him and his people — and would welcome the opportunity to
continue to talk to him whether he stays or goes.

    “Our interaction with Sonny Bill
and Khoder has been consistently robust and honest, and I’ve got absolutely no complaints,” said
    Steve Tew.
“He has been one of the best
people we’ve dealt with in that

maybe you can define what “fooling around” is?

His attitude recently has been pathetic though.

    as you were.
