Chiefs captain Craig Clarke is in doubt for Saturday’s Super Rugby Final against the Sharks in Hamilton, after picking up a knee injury during his side’s semi-final triumph over the Crusaders last week.

Clarke took the knock – which is believed to have affected his medial ligaments – early in that game but managed to soldier on regardless. The knee is badly swollen at present and he’s been put on “light duties” so far this week by coach Dave Rennie, who’s given Clarke about a 50-50 chance of making it in time for the big game.

Should Clarke be ruled out, it’s likely that number 8 Kane Thompson would be asked to step into the second row, with Liam Messam shifting to the back of the scrum and young All Black Sam Cane moving into the starting fifteen.

Messam would also be favourite to take over the captain’s armband if Clarke doesn’t recover in time.
