In naming his side to take on the Lions in the ABSA Under 21 competition this week, Sharks coach Sean Everitt has been forced to omit regular open-side flanker Chris Cloete, due to a knee injury.

The former Selbornian has had some bad luck with injury in the past, missing out on most of the under 19 season two years back after breaking his leg in one of the early games. This time around, it’s a medial ligament injury set to keep him out of action, with the knock he picked up against Border last week meaning a gruelling eight weeks on the sidelines.

Two Durban schoolboys will profit from Cloete’s misfortune, though; the good news just keeps coming for Westville Boys High, with Khaya Majola (a classmate of Olympic gold medallist Chad le Clos) named to make his first start of the season in the number 6 jersey. Glenwood’s Wade Elliott comes into the squad as utility forward cover on the bench.

The side is otherwise unchanged for the match against the Lions, which kicks off at 17h30 on Friday at Kings Park. As the only unbeaten side left in the competition at this early stage, Heimar Williams and his men could leap frog the Bulls and find themselves at the top of the log should they manage to beat the Lions.

Watch out for winger Sizo Maseko, a former SA Schools winger who played for Province last year , in the number 11 jersey. He scored a hat-trick against Border last week.

Sharks under 21:
15 Jaco van Tonder, 14 Piet Lindeque, 13 Wandi Mjekevu, 12 Heimar Williams (capt), 11 Sizo Maseko, 10 Fred Zeilinga, 9 Hanco Venter, 8 Braam Steyn, 7 Francois Kleinhans, 6 Khaya Majola, 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Brendon Groenewald, 3 Nick Schonert, 2 Franco Marais, 1 Danie Mienie
16 Allan Dell, 17 Maks van Dyk, 18 Stefan Willemse, 19 Wade Elliott, 20 Gavin Hauptfleisch, 21 Jared Meyer, 22 Keelin Bastew

  • Minor corrections: Chris brke his leg on the Kings Park Stadium playing for the Sharks U 19 as he was about to score a try. Sizo Maseko was definitely not “imported”, he just arrived and was spotted at club rugby and confirmed his ability at trials.
