Chase the dream

The most successful team in Super Rugby history to never win the title.

That is a line the Sharks will want erased come Saturday (09:30 SA time) and they have every chance to do it.

There is nothing more people love in rugby than a Hollywood, Fairytale story, and in the last 3 weeks the Sharks journey towards the final has been just that.

Having qualified for the playoffs by the skin of their teeth (qualifying in 6th position) the Sharks had to travel to Brisbane to face the defending champion Reds.  Not only did they win, they smashed them off the park.  From there they had to hop straight back on a plane, travel tens of thousands of kilometers back to South Africa and Cape Town, and take on a Stormers team which ended top of the log in the competition, and only lost two games.  The final score flattered the Stormers who were completely out of it until the last 15 minutes.

They could not even enjoy a memorable win in Cape Town because their bags had to be packed to fly out to Australia again on Sunday before they made their final leg of the trip to the real middle-earth, Hamilton New Zealand.

Tomorrow they face a Chiefs team who ended second on the log, beat the 7-time champion Crusaders in the semi-final and had an extra day to rest (playing their semi-final on Friday) playing in front of their home crowd.

In fact – if the Sharks does win tomorrow they would have beaten all the conference winners of each country!

Impossible?  Nothing is impossible.

We can pull out every cliché in the book but the simple fact is, the Sharks are playing magnificent rugby at the moment.  At some point (game against the Bulls in Durban in my opinion) they chucked out the rule book and followed their instincts.  Senior players like Beast, Bismarck, Jannie, Keegan, Fred and JP Pietersen took responsibility and created an environment for the youngsters to thrive in, to trust their ability and play without fear or restraint.

There is an unbelievable self-belief in this Sharks team currently, all born out of trust in their own ability, that of their team mates, and the fact that nothing is impossible.

They will travel to Hamilton to face a Chiefs side with a similar belief, a similar type of game and an equal desire to lift the Super Rugby trophy for the first time.

There isn’t a coach in the world that can explain the moment or instance self-belief trumps the odds – it is one of the greatest mysteries in sport and the reason we follow it so passionately, looking for that one moment where you go out and defy the odds, you achieve what people said would be impossible.  A singular moment where you reach absolute nirvana.

Can the Sharks beat the Chiefs to win the Super Rugby trophy?  Well I can quote many experts and bookies to tell you how they won’t, but then again, that is not why we follow rugby is it?

Go on Sharks, defy the odds, chase the dream!

  • I am getting tired of hearing all the reasons why The Sharks are gonna lose, but none why we are gonna win. In my opinion i think the main reason if we win is hunger! The mind can overcome tired legs, it can numb pain and keep you moving. In the heat of battle when you look up and see your team mates, hurting yet still giving their all, it lifts you up to levels you never knew you could reach. You just need that one player to never give up, and we have several. How awesome must it be as a player, when you are tired and hurting, to look up and see a Bismarck or a Jp or a Marcell tiredly running at the opposition again and again?

  • Well written, also the 2 leaders in our team in Daniel & bissie have really stood up and i am proud of the way they have been playing.
We love our team but what gets to me is when, like the past, we lie down and give the game to the other tea.
What is encouraging is the BMT i have seen in the last 2 games and the passion & desire to win.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 16) :

    You want inspirational?

    Here is inspirational;

The theory of evolution claims only the strong shall survive. Maybe so, maybe so…

But the theory of competition says; ‘Just because they’re strong doesn’t mean they can’t get their asses kicked!’

Thats right! What every long-shot, come-from-behind underdog will tell you is this:

The other guy may in fact be the favourite. The odds may be stacked against me. Fair enough!

But what the odds don’t know is that this isn’t a math test. This is a completely different kind of test. One where PASSION, has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows and the clock starts ticking, just remember out there, the results don’t always add up.

No matter what the stats may say, and the experts may think, and the commentators may have predicted – when the game is on, all bets are off!

Don’t be surprised if somebody decides to flip the script! Because then, as the old saying goes; ‘We got ourselves a game’!

Whether or not you win this thing, you have got to decide how you are going to walk out of there when it’s all set and done – because the game is going to go on.

And there’s only one rule you are going to need to know about, there are no second chances…

There is only this moment, and the next moment. Every one of those moments, is a test. And you get to take one time, and only one time.

So if you see an opening, tear into it. If you get a shot at victory you make damn sure you take it. Seize that moment! That moment is a cross-roads where everything you want will collide with everything standing in your way!

You got momentum at your back, fear and doubt are thundering like a freight train straight at you!

And all you got – the only difference between making history and BEING history, the only thing, ONLY thing you can count on at any given moment, is YOU!

    It’s you versus them!

    You versus NO!

    You versus CAN’T!

    You versus NEXT YEAR!

    LAST YEAR!

    STATISTICS!

    EXCUSES!

    It is you versus HISTORY!

    You, versus the odds.

    It’s you versus second place…

    The clock is ticking…

    Let’s see what you got.

The agony behind the final in 2007 will always be ripe and a victory tomorrow would erase that and we would go from experiencing the most agonising loss in Super Rugby to the greatest win of the tournament to date ! 🙂 Hey Steve Walsh owes us one after all !! 😉

What if I told you it was all meant to be?
Would you believe me, would you agree?
Its almost that feeling that we’ve been here before,

So tell me that you dont think Im crazy when I tell your time is here and now.

    A Moment like this.
Some Sharksfans wait a lifetime for a moment like this.
Some Shark Boys search forever for that one special cup.
I cant believe its happening to us.
Some people wait a lifetime, the Chiefs time is up.

Everything changes, but the game remains.
Something so tough I cant explain.
Well I may be dreaming but till I awake..Can we make the dream last forever?
And I’ll cherish all the glory we share for a moment like this.

    All the Best, Boys!!!

    Loads of Love

  • And another – also appropriate to this day:

I cannot believe the time is here….once again, out of my magic pen, I would like to to dedicate, a message of belief to our Bravehearts in Black and White.

The Shark Tank is turning, our glory fires are burning
Start up the game, we’re ready to go
You caused a commotion and got our devotion
We can be Superugby Champions – just reap what you sow.
I feel fascination, a kicking sensation
This is our turn and we’re striking for gold
Let’s finish this journey on the ultimate note
As fans, you have our belief and our vote!

It’s your dedication to rule the game
You’re certified with the highest degree
You strive for perfection, you have the connection
Now just give it your all, for yourself and me

It’s a brand new day things will go our way
Every night I pray every time I say
It’s a brand new day things will go our way

    Shark Boys
Higher and higher ascending for Gold
    Shark boys
Share our desire, be brave and bold.
