SARU has just announced that WP midfielder Juan de Jongh has been called up to the Rugby Championship squad.
The worst has been confirmed, with JP Pietersen’s broken thumb set to keep him out of action for anything between 6 and 8 weeks. Coach Heyneke Meyer has explained that with Pietersen out, the Boks are a little short of midfield options, hence the decision to call up another centre. While JP would undoubtedly have been first choice at right wing, the fact that he’s been used in the centres this year made him a viable option at 13 as well and with only three midfielders named in the original squad, his utility may have been useful there.
The Boks have adequate wing cover in Bryan Habana, Lwazi Mvovo, JJ Engelbrecht and Francois Hougaard, hence the decision not to bring Gio Aplon in at this stage.

Good for Juan. He deserves it.
@Letgo (Comment 1) : best of an average bunch.
Who will Wipie span in at centre this weekend? Brache and the other oke?
Jeez I’m glad we still have Aplon for the Saaaaaaaks game!
He certainly deserves the call up.
Oh joy, so we’re going to see the Green and Gold subjected to those oh so smooth dance moves after he scores a try….oh wait…don’t think he’ll remember how to score those π
@Ben (Comment 4) : haha… bet you had to wipe down your screen when you read this one, Benno π
Oh joy… π
@Culling Song (Comment 7) : let’s hope those Argies have never seen an inside step before π
He is quick, but he is small. He can step but he doesnβt have a great passing game. He cannot kick. This guy isnβt a world beater.
@Talent (Comment 9) : So enough about his dance routine…how’s his rugby skill π
Had a few good games beginning to mid-season and then started fading. Ball dies with him way too often. Rob Ebersohn may have been a riskier choice but provides more creativity.
He`s got to enjoy his time there, Jordaan will shortly take over… π
He won’t even take the field, so a bit of useless cover really..
