Sharksworld has learned that JP Pietersen has broken his thumb, thus casting his participation in the upcoming Rugby Championship into serious doubt.

According to an article on Rugby365, coach Heyneke Meyer has already been told that Pietersen was forced to for scans on his injured hand after the Sharks’ Super Rugby Final loss to the Chiefs, but appeared to know little more about the injury. We’ve heard from a source close to the player that it’s indeed a break, the sort of injury that should mean around a month on the sidelines.

Pietersen thus looks incredibly doubtful for the Argentina leg of the Rugby Championship, if not longer. Meyer has said he’ll re-assess his squad on completion of that home-and-away series. We expect Gio Aplon to be called into the squad as cover, but with Bjorn Basson already ruled out, it looks as though the Boks may need to ask Lwazi Mvovo to wear the unfamiliar number 14 jersey against the Pumas.

  • This is such sad news..

He was hitting such amazing form for the Sharks, was really keen to see him take that into the Green and Gold jersey.

Get well soon JP, we want to see you back and scoring tries!!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : we can make do without him against Argentina, but my view is that we ahve no hope in hell of beating NZ or Aus away without JP

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) :

    Correct!

Lwazi may finally get a proper shot in the Green and Gold.. He has shown vast improvement during the Super Rugby season, so this might be some due reward..

Unless we see Hougaard moved to wing and Pienaar starting at nine?

  • How long before he could play again? Did Kanko not have a similar injury – and it took a long time before he was available

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 5) : The thumb is a very complex part of the anatomy. It all depends on where the break is, the severity, the type of break etc.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : I’ve been very impressed with Lwazi, especially on defence and under the high ball, two areas I felt he wasn’t great in. Definitely due a Bok start.

  • BTW are the Boks allowed to play in this weekends CC games? I really hope the Sharks give most of the super team a break for Friday – apart from guys who have not played a lot

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 5) : I suffered an avulsion fracture of the rind finger on my left hand. 4 Years on and I still wouldn’t be able to play rugby with this finger in the state it is.

Having said that, elite sportsmen get elite care, me, not-so-elite, apparently…

  • @Pokkel (Comment 13) : Right wing. I had blistering pace, and an ability to only pass to the left. So I never really set the stage alight.
