Two more Bok injury concerns

News from the Boks camp is that both hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle and lock Eben Etzebeth are carrying injuries ahead of the Rugby Champioship opener against Argentina in less than a fortnight.

The Bulls hooker has a knee ligament strain, which is being looked at, but the more serious concern is for the big Stormers number 4, who sustained a hip cartilage injury during his side’s Super Rugby semi-final loss to the Sharks. The 20-year-old, who had just returned to the Stormers team for that match after a month out with an ankle complaint, will see a specialist in Joburg today to confirm the prognosis, but the early signs are that he may be in doubt for the series.

Coach Heyneke Meyer has mentioned a few likely replacements, with WP man Tiaan Liebenberg and (quite surprisingly) Sharks hooker Craig Burden both apparently in the frame for a call-up should Ralepelle cry off. Given that both Bismarck du Plessis and Adriaan Strauss are already ahead in the pecking order, the need for a third hooker is far less pressing, though, than for a starting number 4 lock. With few local options available, Meyer has indicated that he may be forced to call on veteran Bakkies Botha, currently playing for Toulon in France.

Sharks lad Piet-Steph du Toit received another honourable mention from the coach, but is himself recovering from ankle surgery at present and while Lions man Franco van der Merwe could receive another surprise call-up, the feeling is that he’s far more of a number 5 than a number 4.

  • Bresler can play both sides, right?

  • Surely Anton Bresler has shown he’s good enough?

  • Etzebeth was the one Stormers forward that managed to look decent against the Sharks in the semi.

  • No no, HM will probably call up a lock that he wanted to purchase for the blue Fools. 🙄

Seems those are the only guys he’ll ever call up…and Bresler was obviously not good enough for his beloved blue and pink team.

HM seems to think that he’s still building a team and needs to coach the players he calls up for national duty in to better players.

And I always thought national duty is reward for form – not hopeful potential which might never pay off. 👿

  • Now let that be a lesson to the young Etzebeth. You will carry long term injuries in you run into Bissie!

  • bresler is useless, it took kanko to make the sharks lineout functional to superb again…

  • @Megatron (Comment 7) : His line out might not be that good, but his work rate around the field is awesome. Plus with all that work he does around the field, he barely gives away any penalties.

  • Good morning…does Etsebeth’s injury follow after his collision with Bismarck? That was a massive one. I could feel the pain right there in our living room. When will the CC teams for Saturday @ Newlands be announced, or is it already done? Thank you.

  • @JustPlainSHARK (Comment 14) :

    Good player is Bresler.

Just not sure he’s a great player.

It takes a different type to compete with the best at test level. Don’t think he’s enough of a “stand-out” to cut it there.

  • Sharks have had by far the least rest and the hardest campaign and yet have only one injury concern and that is a hand injury. Does this say something about the training / medical facilities available in Durban.

  • I think Bresler is very good. Athletic, strong, works very hard and good in the lineout. I don’t think Bekker stood out against him in the Stormers game.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 15) : Why is Jacques Potgieter there then? And Pierre Spies? And Morne Steyn? And Dean Greyling? See a pattern yet?

  • Comment 20, posted at 07.08.12 11:43:20 by Die Kriek Reply

  • I think as a number 4 lock Bresler would have to work on his ball carrying to get called up any time soon and for 5 he needs to work on his contribution at line out time.

He’s basically only been a jumper at the Sharks since Kanko’s return and before that the line outs was a bit of an issue for the Sharks.

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 20) :

Never said I agreed with any of those selections… either.

Actually, I agree with selecting Morne Steyn. I think when he’s on his game, he’s exactly what we need.

If everyone were fit I’d have gone for something like this though.

1 Beast Mtawarira / Coenie Oosthuizen
2 Bismarck du Plessis / Adriaan Strauss / Chiliboy Ralepelle
3 Jannie du Plessis / Pat Cilliers
4 Eben Etzebeth / Pieter Steph du Toit
5 Andries Bekker / Juandre Kruger
6 Heinrich Brussow / Marcell Coetzee
7 Schalk Burger / Willem Alberts
    8 Duane Vermeulen
9 Ruan Pienaar / Francois Hougaard / Piet van Zyl
10 Johan Goosen / Morne Steyn
11 Bryan Habana / JJ Engelbrecht
12 Francois Steyn / Juan de Jongh
13 Jean de Villiers / Jaco Taute
    14 JP Pietersen
15 Patrick Lambie / Gio Aplon

  • Bresler as a very unrated player to becoming a formidable workhorse for the sharks give him credit where it is due. He has been picked ahead of many a so called future bok locks recently due to his form.

  • Comment 24, posted at 07.08.12 12:31:26 by Dunx Reply

  • @Letgo (Comment 21) : As apposed to Flip vd Merwe whom is such a prolific ball carying lock and who’s workload is second to none? 🙄

I’m not trying to say Bresler is better than Etzebeth, but Flippie is the lock version of Dean Greyling – both confuse bringing physicality with playing dirty.

  • Comment 25, posted at 07.08.12 12:41:55 by FireTheLooser Reply

  • Obviously some of you don’t know much about rugby!!! How can you put PSdT in the team when a player like Bresler is available? Selectors tend to mention a player during a game, and everybody run after that person. Bresler’s work rate is exceptionally high… more than some of the senior players who made the Boks squad and never got the recognition for that. And in the previous game against the Stormers, the lock did not stand out either…in fact, they were fairly insignificant in the line-outs

  • But seriously guys, I know we look at things through black and white glasses but we need to be a bit realistic here.

All I can say is thank goodness the average rugby fan isn’t a selector or have any influence on the composition of the Bok squad.

I’m a massive fan of Bresler who has improved with every outing for the Sharks and has had a superb season, but we are picking a Bok squad here and need to calm down a little. Basically Bres has had one very good Super 15 season, let him perform in the Currie Cup and progress even further next season in the Super 15 before we start talking about Bok call-ups. The way he has progressed for the Sharks and stood up to the tasks required of him has been exceptional and I see no reason why he won’t continue to improve with further experience.

Just remember that if we picked the entire Sharks team as Boks, we’d get stuffed by the Aussies and Kiwi’s, as would be the case if we picked the entire Bulls or Stormers or whoever. You can’t just go picking players who have had 6 months of great form (there are certain exceptions to this) but generally you need consistency over a longer period of time.

So with that in mind I still maintain Frans Steyn should be allowed to ” find his feet” in the CC before they rush him straight into the bok squad. Surely Jean, Jean and Meisiekind should be good enough for them?
