Lions appoint JC captain

Veteran prop JC “don’t call me Janse” van Rensburg has been handed the captain’s armband as the Golden Lions begin their Currie Cup defence, under caretaker coach Johan Ackermann.

Last year’s coach John Mitchell is going to be watching from the stands this year as his protracted disciplinary hearing goes on and with assistant coaches Carlos Spencer and Wayne Taylor also shown the door, poor Ackies and JC will have their hands full running the show; former captain Josh Strauss has been relieved of his duties in a clean sweep of the previous leadership, but will, at least, remain with the squad.

The Lions have lost the services of Pat Cilliers and Elton Jantjies, both to the Boks, but it looks like Butch James is still sticking around for a bit, despite rumours a few months back that he’d be let go. The Cronje twins, Ross and Guy, have cracked the nod too, as have young forwards in Ruan Botha (SA Under 20 lock), Francois du Toit (hooker) and Willie Britz (flank). A number of those named will start the season injured, though, including Jaco Taute, Deon van Rensburg and Jaco Kriel.

The Lions open their 2012 Currie Cup campaign with a home game against the Cheetahs this Saturday.

Forwards: Jacobie Adriaanse, Ruan Botha, Willie Britz, Ruan Dreyer, Francois du Toit, Cobus Grobbelaar, JC Janse van Rensburg (captain), Jaco Kriel, Derick Minnie, Caylib Oosthuizen, Hendrik Roodt, Joshua Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Franco van der Merwe, Callie Visagie, Warren Whiteley,

Backs: Michael Bondesio, Andries Coetzee, Ruan Combrinck, Guy Cronje, Ross Cronje, JR Esterhuizen, Deon Helberg, Alwyn Hollenbach, Butch James, James Kamana, Lionel Mapoe, Waylon Murray, Jaco Taute, Deon van Rensburg, Anthony Volmink.

  • If only the Lions still had Elton Jantjies they would`ve been good value on Sportsbet @ 7 for the CC.

Without Jantjies I`m afraid I don`t really know what to expect from them.

Could this be the year of the Cheetahs? 😯

  • @Zibbie (Comment 5) : And I thought being a Sharks supporter is difficult – we should have a moment of silence during this weekend’s CC games for you Lions supporters.

  • Josh Strauss did not give up the captaincy willingly. You can take that as fact.

  • @Ludz (Comment 8) : I think if ever there was a “dumb” franchise, it’d be the Lions.

The rot there runs so deep, it’s the top brass that’s the cancer there, the coaches and management are just the symptoms of this.

There just isn’t a cure for what they have, winning the CC last year just prolonged the suffering.
