Griquas take early casualties at Loftus

Aside from a surprisingly-heavy 20-35 defeat in a game they were widely expected win, Griquas came away from Loftus Versveld with little else to smile about on Friday night.

The carding of fullback Willie le Roux for a silly tip tackle looks set to come back to bite his side, with a citing and potential suspension already in the works. In setting up a wonderful try for wing Rocco Jansen, le Roux had shown just moments earlier what a dangerous attacking weapon he could be and with Rudi Vogt already out for the season, coach Pote Human will need to dig deep for a replacement should his number 15 now face a spell on the sidelines.

Worse, though, is the injury to outside centre JP Nel. The big former Bull broke his hand early in the game and with an operation already pencilled in for this week, looks unlikely to play for Griquas again before heading to France at the end of the Currie Cup season. Winger Zuks Vlindlu also took a smack during the game, leaving his right eye swollen shut and he too is in doubt for the home game against Western Province this weekend.

  • So the JP Nel return has been cut short?!

    Such a shame..

I hope Griquas can pull through and be competitive for the season, always makes for a great Currie Cup if they are on form!

  • Eish. Pretty decent off season buys and now a few out again. JP being the biggest loss from a financial point of view.

Barry Geel is with the Cheetahs now? And where’s Jean Stemmet these days?
