Further pain for under 19s

Rob du Preez’s Sharks under 19 side suffered their second successive defeat on Saturday, going down in appalling conditions to Western Province, by 16 points to 6.

The architect of that defeat, ironically, has quite strong links to Sharks rugby himself; Western Province flyhalf Tomasso Allan is the nephew of former Natal, Scotland and Springbok hooker John and it was the 11 points from his boot (a conversion and three penalties) that ultimately swung the match in his side’s favour, on a day when running rugby certainly wasn’t on the agenda.

Province captain Johan Kirsten, playing at hooker, scored the match’s only try, with a penalty apiece from du Preez and replacement flyhalf Brendan Cope all that the juniors Sharks had to show on the day.

After two good opening wins, the Sharks under 19s are now slipping dangerously down the log and it will take a supreme effort from coaches and players alike to arrest the slide, against the powerful Blue Bulls outfit they’ll face at Kings Park on Saturday.

WP 16: Try Johan Kirsten. Conversion Tomasso Allan. Penalties Allan (3)
Sharks (6): Penalties Rob du Preez, Brendan Cope
