Aside from a single injury-enforced change, the Sharks retain the same starting lineup for this weekend’s away clash against Griquas in the Currie Cup. Jean Deysel retains the captaincy ahead of Keegan Daniel, who led the side in Super Rugby.

Steven Sykes has been forced to withdraw this week due to a rib injury, opening the way for Jandre Marais to start his second match of the campaign (but his first in the number 4 jersey that arguably suits him best). He will resume a second-row partnership with Anton Bresler that was forged in the Sharks junior ranks and continued through a succession of Vodacom Cup campaigns that the two played together.

Marais’ younger brother, Peet, comes into the number 18 jersey vacated by his elder sibling’s promotion.

The only other change to the match 22 sees Rosco Speckmann dropped – for the second time without actually getting onto the field – in favour of loose forward Brynard Stander. The Sharks have opted to go with a 5-2 split on the bench against the tough Griquas pack, with Stander joining Francois Kleinhans as loose forward options amongst the replacements.

15 Louis Ludik, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Paul Jordaan, 12 Meyer Bosman, 11 Sbura Sithole, 10 Riaan Viljoen, 9 Charl McLeod, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Jean Deysel (capt), 6 Jacques Botes, 5, Anton Bresler, 4 Jandre Marais, 3 Wors Herbst, 2 Monde Hadebe, 1 Dale Chadwick
16 Pieter Dixon, 17 Julian Redelinghuys, 18 Peet Marais, 19 Francois Kleinhans, 20 Brynard Stander, 21 Cobus Reinach, 22 Marius Joubert

  • Did Whitehead and PSdT lose a limb or something?

I mean seriously, how much longer are they to stay on the injury list?

  • Whitehead broke his hand against the Stormers so he should be back in a week or 2. PSdT has some ligament issues. He might miss the entire season.

  • There is some very impressive depth at the Sharks. Missing a whole host of players due to injury and Springbok call-ups and you guys can still put out a team that would give most Super Rugby sides a good run.
Think Marais is the future at 4 for the Sharks. Sykes has not impressed me at all lately.

  • Why would you want to go from first choice to the Sharks, to first choice for the Kings? Or are they offering him more money?

  • Maybe Sykes realizes he won’t the be first choice for much longer. In all fairness, the youngsters (Jandre Marais, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Anton Bresler) have all played better, more consistent rugby than Sykes.

  • @JarsonX (Comment 7) : I know we have very promising youngsters coming through the ranks but it would still be quite a loss if that were the case.
