Avert your eyes, Sharks fans. The boys went down in a Kimberley arm wrestle for the third time in three years on Saturday and the ratings reflect a rather poor team performance in which nothing much of merit happened all 80 minutes long.

1. Dale Chadwick. Continues to impress and ticked all the right boxes for a loosehead – strong in the scrums, tackled like a man possessed and also carried up often and effectively. The only criticism is that he perhaps tried to take on a little too much on his own. 7/10
2. Monde Hadebe. The education of Monde continues. His basics were again very good, but was quiet in other aspects of play while his opposite number proved anything but. 5/10
3. Wiehahn Herbst. Stood his ground well at scrum time, but perhaps needed to be just a wee bit more dominant in order to keep his direct opponent quieter in loose play. Some good tackles and carries. 6/10
4. Jandre Marais. Very physical and works incredibly hard – however, on the day, the Griquas locks looked just that little harder. 6/10
5. Anton Bresler. Sustained a high work rate throughout and was safe on his lineout ball. Made a few good ball carries as well, which is an area of his game that continues to improve. 6/10
6. Jacques Botes. Played his game well – meaning he worked furiously at the rucks and on defence – but Jacques is not making the impact that he used to make and was far less effective at the breakdown than his opposite number, Marnus Schoeman, proved to be. 5/10
7. Jean Deysel. Achieved some good go-forward at times and continues to progress towards his best form of old. Must lose points for failing to pull the team through, as captain. 6/10
8. Keegan Daniel. Not Keegan’s day, really. He’s all about impact and making something special happen, but on the hard Kimberley field, he got knocked back time and again. The Griquas niggle clearly unsettled him too. 5/10

9. Charl McLeod. Had a pretty good game at the base, all things considered. 7/10
10. Riaan Viljoen. For a second week running, Tjop has failed to fire at flyhalf. Battled with the fast Griquas defence and both his options and his tactical kicking left much to be desired. 4/10
11. Sbura Sithole. Despite being called “Luzako Vulindlu” by Hugh Blayden for most of the match, Sbura had a busy outing. He defended well and worked hard with ball in hand, but was never given any space by his centres and more often than not ended up bundled into touch when he did get the ball. 6/10
12. Meyer Bosman. Kicked superbly for poles and once at flyhalf, managed to threaten the Griquas line just a little with ball in hand. Had very little to do outside Viljoen, though, other than tackle. 7/10
13. Paul Jordaan. Not a great day for the kid, who’s battling just a little for consistency and impact at this level. Enjoyed little of the ball and was found wanting on defence just a bit too often for my liking. 4/10
14. Odwa Ndungane. Such a valuable player is Odwa – always seems to be in the right place at the right time and more often than not, the one to turn a bad situation into something positive. Had few touches, but looked classy in each one of them. 7/10
15. Louis Ludik. Performed his basics well and looked to run hard at the Griquas defence whenever he had the chance. For the most part, they saw him coming, though. 6/10

16. Pieter Dixon. Made his debut this week and while lineouts were sound, looked a little off the pace. Will hopefully improve as match fitness picks up. 5/10
17. Julian Redelinghuys. An unfortunate few minutes on the field for Julian, with way too many penalties conceded, including a strange one for obstructions that ended up ruling out the only Sharks try on the day. 4/10
18. Peet Marais. Tried hard when he came on and was all over the show. A good prospect for the future. 6/10
19. Francois Kleinhans. Picked up where Botes left off – working feverishly at the breakdowns but needs to offer just a bit ore as either a ground player or a ball carrier, rather than being a little bit of both. 5/10
20. Brynard Stander. A great cameo from a very promising player indeed. Made a few storming carries and looked to be the sort of guy who could have a big ipact against tired legs. 7/10
21. Cobus Reinach. Another good performance from Reinach. Kept the ball moving and his quality of service was top notch. 7/10
22. Marius Joubert. Not a bad outing for Marius, all things considered. Does a good holding-and-straightening job at inside centre and his experience prove useful in the second half. 6/10

  • Have a look on Keo at this article.

  • Well I thought Plum summed it up when he said that Griquas had more mongrel than the Sharks all over the field. I thought Deysel was poor to be honest- he tends to stand off in the backline a lot. I must say I was impressed when the backline was Bosman,Joubert,Jordaan at 10,12,13. I thought the Sharks were robbed of a penalty try right at the death tho as the Griquas player was miles offside and we had a huge overlap.

  • Redelinghuys should get a minus 5. I have not seen a more useless person on a rugbyfield in a long time. Was on for 10 minutes and knocked 2 balls and gave away 3 penalties. Stander to start ahead of Botes. This guy looks like he has some mongrel. The service from Reinach is much crisper than McLeod, McLeod seems to run 2 steps sideways before passing and this puts the whole backline under preasure.

  • Good ratings Rob..

I have to agree that I think it is time for Plum to back Meyer at flyhalf..

Our centres are having little impact when he is there and the wings just run out of space as nobody is straightening the line..

Thought Dale had a great game, but the Griquas tactic of getting under our skin and irritating us really got to the younger players..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 6) : yes. That was their plan ahead of the game and they executed to perfection. The useless ref played into their hands.

  • @Bite me (Comment 3) : Julian was playing only his 4th cc game and has a total of less than 100min game time. Now go look at the stats from the Bulls game and see how much good he did there. Our young players need time and our support. They don’t need to be branded ‘useless’ by fairweather fans who overreact to a loss.

Can I point you to the naughty step? 🙂

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) :

Don’t know if you got the SA commentators, but they were raving about his brilliant game?!?!

He should be banished to club games, he could make no call without the backup of the TMO?

Poor Veldsman had no idea what he was asking for, most of the time!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : the commentators also couldn’t figure out which winger was vulindlu, so just called every black winger that name just in case. Bloody muppets.

  • I must say, although I completely agree with you on Botes (he is lacking that spark we’ve gotten used to, especially in recent CC seasons) the amount of times the ref said leave it, roll away, or just get away to Marnus Schoeman without ever blowing his whistle was just mind boggling.

He was a huge annoyance, but just given the fact that the ref kept telling him to get away, I would say he was an illegal annoyance, but the ref didn’t know how to stop it.

  • Viljoen really did not look good.

What about this for a team?

    10 Bosman
    12 Jordaan
    13 Ludik
    15 Viljoen

Although Joubert has been looking pretty good coming of the bench, I still feel like he holds on to the ball to much.

Jordaan needs to see more of the ball and a short stint at 13 has never done any fullback any damage.

In 1/2 weeks Tim will be back then we can have

    10 Bosman, 12 Tim, 13, Jordaan, 15 Ludik

  • I also think although Charl does a lot of good from the base of the ruck he still make to many bad choices and errors.

I’d like to see Reinach given a start.

  • Our biggest problem on saturday was our backlines total lack of thrust, just about every single ball was run laterally across the field and into touch thus losing possesion as well, no one was taking accountability to straighten the line, was very frustrating to watch. Must say i did like the look of young Stander when he came on, hopefully he gets a bit more game time going forward.

  • Chadwick was excellent. He tackled well and also showed excellent hands. Redelinghuys was awful. I am a fan of Sithole based on his potential, but he deserved a lower score. He is very one-dimensional right now. He just waits out wide and then tries to run over people. He should learn from Odwa.

I had this debate with another fan last week already – our gameplan is wrong. We need more direct play off first phase and in midfield. Viljoen is just shovelling the ball wide behind the gain line.

May make sense to start Bosman at 10 and someone like Stander ahead of Botes. Not sure if he or Deysel can play 8.

  • 😈 PLUM are you a coach or a manager?
I hope the first, then coach the sidestep out of McLoed, coach the backline to run lines, the flyhalf on what his options are, (ala Carlos Spencer)Coach the individuals too.
Practising is not coaching and it is showing! 😈

At stage of posting there wasn’t anything related to the springboks, besides the scoring which wouldn’t be looked at often, thus I used the new post.I have seen similar things done before and nothing said.

  • Kudos to Dale Chadwick for the way he has upped his game recently.

It was not so long ago that I used to cringe every time I saw his name on the team sheet. He seemed to lose possession just about every time he took the ball into contact and he fell off tackles all the time. Well done young man on the improvement you have shown both in your scrummaging as well as your general play, you are doing yourself proud at the moment, keep it up.
