Sharks keen on Jantjies – reports

According to the generally reliable Brenden Nel of Supersport, Lions flyhalf Elton Jantjies has been offered a spot in the Sharks’ Super Rugby squad for next year, although a deal from the Stormers is understood to be on the table as well.

Jantjies has been seen in both Durban and Cape Town in recent weeks, prompting speculation about his future after it was revealed a clause in his contract with the Lions will allow him to play Super Rugby elsewhere next year. This comes after the Lions were relegated from the 2013 competition in favour of the Southern Kings.

According to Nel, the Sharks have offered the Lions an assurance that Jantjies would be able to return to Joburg for Currie Cup (and promotion/relegation) matches after Super Rugby in 2013, but there also appears to be an attractive offer on the table from WP – we’re assuming to join them permanently.

The elephant in the room here is the role of Pat Lambie, who despite assurances to the contrary from the blinkered fool in charge of the Boks is still considered the Sharks’ first-choice option at flyhalf. It would be very hard for the Sharks to accommodate both Lambie and Jantjies in starting roles unless the former is moved to fullback, thus creating a different headache as Louis Ludik, Riaan Viljoen and Gouws Prinsloo are all competing for that position as is.

Jantjies will apparently confirm his decision in a week or so’s time.

  • Apologies in advance for the thread derail. According to Supersport the Sharks are still in the hunt for Jantjies’ signature for next year’s Super Rugby. I honestly don’t get it…

Really hoping Jantjies makes the sane decision (for the sake of his own, Bosman, Viljoen, Prinsloo and Lambie’s career) and goes to Cape Town.

  • Let the Stormers have him!! We don’t need him and we don’t want to become another Bulls, buying players to keep from having to play against them.

  • This must be why the Stormers are still holding on the Demetri Catrakilis counter-offer..

    Interesting times..

  • Id def take Janjies. But only on a permanent deal. Even if it means losing Viljoen,Prinsloo or Ludik. Janjies is a quality player and seems to be just out of the Bok reckoning so he would be available a lot. Lambie needs to make a choice and quickly- but dont be surprised if he heads to the UK sooner rather than later.

  • Jantjies is good, but I do not want to see him start ahead of Lambie! And we must also never let go of Ludick. Bosman should be our backup fly-halve next year. The only position I think the Sharks will be lacking a bit is prop, therefore we should try and get Pat Cilliers back.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 16) : Not sure he is the personality we want here…as for Lambie moving overseas, I dont think so just yet. He knows he’s top at the Sharks and he wont get any international offers from the Boks overseas.Guess he could play for Scotland – but thats going backwards.

  • @durbsguy (Comment 26) : maybe Ruan’s telling him about Ulster 😆

ohh, not to keen on Jantjies coming to the Sharks. Presumably there is a gap after Freddie’s departure, but I’d rather have Lambie at 10 and Ludick at 15. Ludick is really playing well of late.

  • Don’t think Plum and Jantjies will get along.

Would be an absolute waste of money, Plum will have him on the bench for 75mins. each game just like Kockott.

  • Jantjies’ father was interviewed on one of the news bulletins last week. In it he said that they had already spoken to the Bulls and Sharks and were set to meet with Province. I got the feeling he was “smousing” with his “lightie”.

  • I don’t know what all this negativity in regards to Jantjies is! He is a very good player and excellent kicker, and has BMT. Lets face it, if Lambie whant to be a Bok he will have to take up the N0 15 shirt at the Sharks as well, well at least as long as that Bull retrograde is in charge of the Boks. Bosman is not that great at SR level, we have seen that already seen! As long as Lambie is a starter at the Sharks and his chance at the Boks is not jeapardised I am all for Jantjies coming to the Sharks.

  • Well, imagine this:

    9. McLeod and Reinach
    10.Bosman and Jantjies
    11.Mvovo and Sithole
    12.Whitehead and F. Steyn
    13.Jordaan and JP Pietersen
    14.Ludik and Ndungane
    15.Lambie and Viljoen

It means every position is settled but it shifts Lambie back to 15, while he is the best 10 South Africa has.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 34) : I’ve also been forced to eat my words when it comes to this kid… has been around for a few years now and plays consistently good rugby.

I still think Pat is probably a more complete player, but I can see the huge value that Elton could bring to a Sharks backline.

  • I think he’s a fantastic player – streets ahead of Steyn and on par with Lambie in terms of x-factor. I want to see both these players in future Bok squads pushing each other for the number 10 jersey and that’s why I want him playing at the Stormers. To me there’s a fear of ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’.

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) :
Pat is more complete, but currently Elton is much more dangerous on attack in the flyhalf channel.

This may perhaps change if Pat specialises at 10 fulltime from now on.

  • If Jantjes goes to Sharks I would , from a WP perspective, make a huge offer to get Lambie….

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) : Amen! Me too – but the difference here is Carlos Spencer – He coached Jantjies to the next level. Plum and H Meyer needs to start coaching Lambie and others instead of just managing talent. The main reason SA rugby is stuttering! 😈
