Sharks in rumoured swoop for Lions pair

The grapevine is abuzz ahead of Saturday’s crunch Currie Cup derby between the Lions and the Sharks and while much of what follows is far from confirmed, I’m reliably informed that the information is genuine.

Sources tell me that both Elton Jantjies and Franco van der Merwe will join up for the Sharks for the duration of next year’s Super Rugby tournament, before returning to fulfil their contractual obligations to the Lions later in the year. The deals I’ve heard about would appear to be rather amicable, with the Sharks essentially helping the Lions to not lose the players to other unions ahead of their key Currie Cup and promotion/relegation matches next year.

We expect to hear of a number of similar loan deals in the next few weeks, though, with virtually every “Super Rugby quality” player on the Lions books scrabbling to get onto the roster of one of the other teams who will actually be playing in the competition next year.

We expect to be able to confirm the Jantjies and van der Merwe moves soon, but for now, as far as I’m told, the rumours that they are indeed on their way to Durban seem to be gathering momentum rather rapidly.

  • They should also bring KZN Old boys back, like Pat Cilliers and Warren Whiteley…

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 1) : Pat’s not going to play under Plumtree again mate… not ever.

And seriously, what would we do with Whiteley? He wasn’t good enough to get a gig ahead of better loose forwards when we did have him… and even now, he’s battling to crack the Lions starting lineup when all their others are fit,

  • Let’s hope these guys are being pulled in as back-up rather than starting players.

We could probably find a spot for a FH backup for LAMBIE and a lock backup for Bresler, PSdT and Peet.

But best not be as starting players ’cause that’d just be dumb.

  • @Robdylan – a year ago when the Lions won the Currie Cup Whiteley was one of the best loose forwards in the tourno. He has skill and speed, very similar to Kanko but better. He has battled with some injuries lately hence his struggle to get back into the team, but he is classy with tons of potential. The Sharks have enough ‘bashers’ on the flank and actually need some players with skill and speed. Anyway, you obviously don’t like him which is your opinion…..thank goodness for differing opinions or these blogs and the world would be boring.. 😉

  • If Plum is playing Lambie at full-back, I will personally travel to Durban and I will moer him! Lambie is our best fly-half, Ludik our best full-back. Don’t mess that up. Jantjies can be our backup fly-half.

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 4) : take off the green shades bro. Warren Whiteley is NOT, I repeat, NOT a better number 8 than Ryan Kankowski. Lovely guy I’m sure, but he doesn’t make a list of the top 5 eighthmen in the country and would probably be 4th choice in that position at the Sharks.

  • @Robdylan, OK boet. I am an under 21 coach and used to spotting talent and that kid has talent. Anyway, you obviously know more so will leave it at that. All he lacks is a bit more size. Agreed he would be 3rd or 4th choice now but think future without Daniel and Botes….no quick flanks….

  • @robdylan (Comment 6) : Agreed,Rob. If anyone, why not Rhodes?Anyway,let’s wait and see.
@Grasshopper (Comment 8) : Daniel & Kanko are only in the mid-twenties, so have a couple more years to go still plus we have a number of u21 & u19 players waiting in wings to cover or take over those positions. As an u21 coach check them out. 😀
@Zibbie (Comment 7) : What more convincing do you need? 😆

Better than Kanko, though? No. Better than Keegan? No.

Younger than Botes, yes… but we have other good youngsters.

  • @TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 5) : Totally agree, that is wht I was worried when I heard we were in the hunt for Jantjies. He really is a good player, but Lambie is better and the way Ludik is playing, why would you want Lambie out of position (in his second best position) in fullback?

  • OK guys, hopefully he gets a contract somewhere else and proves you all wrong. Just like Shaun Adendorff in the Under21’s, shunned by the Sharks welcomed by the Bulls….thriving at the Bulls. Agreed Cloete, Kleinhans, Terra etc are good but they all don’t have the same silky hand and ball skills of a Whiteley….a pity rugby has turned into a size game only….

  • I like Franco van der Merwe – always comes across as a good, honest hard-worker. Will not be upset to see him among our ranks. I’m a little more hesitant about Jantjies though. I think he’s a fantastic talent, ordinarily I’d be thrilled with his recruitment, but the implications for Lambie and Ludik worry me. I’m with TRF_Ezequiel on that one. Still think we need to recruit a back-up loosehead, Chadwick isn’t ready yet. If not Pat Cilliers, who else? Has Deon Carstens still got a home in Durban?

On a different note, anyone else thoroughly disgusted with Owen Nkumane’s “analysis” of Province’s red cards on Boots & All? He made them come across as victims and implied that Deysel dived for the cameras. Slanderous…

  • Good news. Like I said I will only support the teams that supported the Lions and only lend our players out to them. With the extended SuperXV it would be good for the Sharks to have them amongst their ranks. Pat Cilliers and JC would also be good additions amongst the forwards and Bondisio and Taute amongst the backs. Would really improve the depth at the Sharks for the SuperXV

I don’t agree with those numbers. He goes to the same church as I do and he’s fractionally shorter than Jannes Labuschagne who is 1.95, and I would think a fair bit more than 99kg.

By the way a really good and humble guy, but better than the Hof or Keegan, he is not.

  • @Bump, what I meant was better at the same age. Keegan is 27 (28 in March) and only really broken through as a Bok this year. Kanko is 27 next month and also only been playing well recently. Warren turned 25 3 days ago so hopefully in 2 years he will have developed into a player of their standard, he certainly has the head, the physique and the skills to do so…

  • Time for the Super franchises to stock their larders for next season – its going to be a bun fight for the best players but it doesnt help anyone just taking a player because he is available, he will have to add value in the depth department. I like the idea of it being on a lone basis.

  • I Love the Sharks, but the management got the ability to “mess up” good players. Brent Russel, Tinus Delport, Gaffie du Toit and now we want to do it with Lambie. Even Ruan (forced tp play flyhalf). We recruit them in a position because they were so good and because they are so good we play them out of position, then they are not so good any more, we move them to the bench and then we lose them.

  • If this turns out to be true I fear that Lambie’s days as starting flyhalf for the Sharks may be numbered (for the next Super Rugby season at least). I just can’t imagine a scenario where a coach would want to bench either a player of Lambie or Jantjies’ calibre if they’re both fit to start. On the the flipside, the Sharks will be sitting with some serious quality in there backrow reserves.

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 27) : No Dude, Kanko has been starting for the Sharks at 8 since he was 21 and he was at his best 07/08. He should have been the Boks’ starting 8 a long time ago, but the Bok selectors never really ever gave him a shot. You can’t really see what a player is capable of if you give him one start out of position and 5 minutes from the bench every other game.

What a waste of talent. We seem to do that a lot in South Africa.

Why put another guy on the bench, at on stage last season we had 5 loosies in our 22… and I’m not sure, but when Alberts was playing lock, didn’t we have Deysel and Botes on the bench at one stage. Can’t remember, but we already have too many loosies.

I suspect that Pat may just like to concentrate on fullback anyway, because I think thats where Meyer sees him but then he would have to unseat Ludik.

For one when Lambie was actually playing flyhalf he was outplaying and a better 10 than Jantjes.

This year yes Jantjes has had a good year, but can you truelly compare the 2 players? one have played only a few matches due to injury and also most of those games having played full back?, IS IT TRUELLY THAT DIFFICULT?? if leaves the Sharks for another union?

Would those with their 1 day memories be happy when Lambie leaves the Sharks for another union? that at the expense for a player thats on loan for only the one super 15 season,?? that for a good player yes but a player who is not better that lambie.

I have no problem with Jantjes playing for us, we need the depth, and if injury occurs again as it did this past season we need to have good cover. but seriously??? think before typing stupidity or you might just get what you wish?

  • There is a trend at the moment for fullbacks to be retreaded as wings, this in an effort to counter the kick and chase game. For this reason don’t be surprised to see ludick playing a lot at wing this season AND YES our closet is not overflowing with wings … I see this as the rational for getting another flyhalf and elton is world class in this regard … Don’t be surprised if we see a couple more fullbacks in the squad too. The lock option isn’t bad either … We have hemoraged locks and since we have just lost sykes … Not a bad option … I would love to see another tighthead.
