Time to start rotating

During the last Super Rugby Tournament the Sharks stuck to a tried and tested core of players and onlyentured outide of this group when injuries struck. The same can be said for the other franchises as well.

There’s a rumour going around that we may get Elton Jatjies and Franco Van Der Merwe and that is what lead to this article. All Sharks fans want Lambie to start every game but in Elton we have a quality alternative who should be donning the Green and Gold very soon. Franco also brings lots of experience and wouldn’t be out of place starting for the Sharks.

Nobody will argue that Morne Steyn has been overplayed since 2009 having played almost every minute for the Boks and the Bulls with the odd 10 minutes rest here and there. In order to preserve Lambie’s career and ensure that he’s at his peak for the Boks and also that he doesn’t become jaded I’d love to see him rotating with Elton. For the first 2 weeks he gets 50 minutes and Elton 30 and then they switch for the next 2 weeks. This will ensure them both adequate playing time but also not run them into the ground.

The same concept can be employed elsewhere eg. Burden and Bissie or Viljoen and Ludik. This will expose a greater number of players to super rugby while also keeping our players fresh.

This is an opinion piece so feel free to chip in…

  • The SR competition is long and a team with a healthy squad will always have a shot at the title. Pointless playing the same guys over and over. Hightime we get smart and start playing fresh players our first 2 games overseas.

  • Any intel on John Mitchell joining the Sharks? Read an article on him saying he’ll be joining one of the big unions in SA…figured that him and Plum are big buddies and we do need a forwards coach.

  • ChrisS, in an ideal world, that is how it should work. But form (or lack thereof), injuries and the importance of certain matches can scuttle even the best laid plans. Having the options and depth is always great, but keeping the players happy and getting value for money with contracts and wages must always be considered.

If that made no sense, it’s because I’m well pickled. Happy Heritage Day all ๐Ÿ™‚

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : If the Western Force were too big a culture clash for Monsieur Mitchell, I think coaching those blue fellas might be a bridge too far.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : @MerckZ (Comment 9) : Ja, there’s definitely no place for Mitchel’s running rugby at planet blue.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : He’s been going in and out of KZN over the past few weeks so this is me hoping that he’s speaking to our boys. Hope his case with the Lions doesn’t go on for long. We need all the rugby brains and resources if we want to win the SR competition next year.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 2) : Is Mitchell a forwards coach? for some reason i have always thought he was more of a backline coach?

  • @Dunx (Comment 15) : Well he played hooker for the All Blacks, so you’d expect him to have more knowledge of forward play.
