Steyn ankle worry for Boks

Alas, I fear it’s the “other” Steyn, Sharks centre Frans, that is now in considerable doubt for Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash against the Wallabies at Loftus. The big 25-year-old rolled his ankle during the first few minutes of the Boks’ training session yesterday.

Steyn will need to go for scans later today to assess the extent of the damage, but initial signs are apparently not positive and it looks as though Heyneke Meyer may be forced into a midfield reshuffle. With Jean de Viliers the only real option available at inside centre, it looks at though the captain may move back into the position that arguably suits him best, but it’s anybody’s guess who will be picked to partner him. The adventurous choice, but one which Mayer has already poo-pooed, would be to back young Jaco Taute at 13. The alternative, Juan de Jongh, is experienced, but is also a player whom Meyer has regularly left out of his squads given the option. He’ll probably pick one of the Bulls under 21 centres to play instead.

The chances of a change at flyhalf are also appearing more remote by the day; Johan Goosen is apparently struggling with a heel injury, which doesn’t appear to serious, although if the latest media reports are to be believed, regardless of the lad’s fitness, Oom Heyneke looks set to give his favourite has-been, Morne Steyn, “one more final, last ever, I really mean it this time” chance to again display his total lack ability to do much of anything, in the number 10 jersey at his favourite stomping ground, Loftus Versveld.

You’ve got to feel for Heyneke Meyer in times like this. I mean, the Bulls have so many different players, after all… how can you possibly expect him to pick the right ones every single week?

  • Rob, I think you may need a sabbatical from commenting on anything Springbok related too. And now I shall stop typing lest I break mine again

  • Reports from Bok practice seem to suggest that Taute is @ 12 .

  • playing players out of position is not helping. Why not Taute at 15 and since we know Morné is playing 10 put Lambie at 12. He is a flyhalf that the boks are trying to break

  • Rob the whole tone of this article, describes to a T what I feel like!!!! I have purposefully organised an outing this Saturday evening so even if the masachist in me is tempted to watch, it will be impossible to waste any more of my time 😈 Really couldn’t be bothered!

  • @Sharksmad – The Blog’s Dudette (Comment 7) : I used to be so excited for the team to come out. Now i feel more apprehensive!

I was excited to see what Heyneke could do with the Boks and was over the Moon when he was selected as the coach. I’m now less excited…to put it mildly!

Our kick-pray-chase tactic frustrates me to the point of severe depression and I won’t have any hair left if we continue with it! I want to see running rugby and I’d be far happier losing, knowing that we’re running the ball and developing a complete game, than winning through luck! 👿

I’d love to see a backline this weekend of:

    9. Pienaar (allowed to play his normal, fast, running game)
    10. Goosen
    11. Mvovo
    12. Lambie / Frans Steyn
    13. Hougaard (step and acceleration would suit 13)
    14. Habana
    15. Frans Steyn / Lambie

and have Elton, Vermaak and Taute on the bench.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 8) : Exactly how I feel. My family tries desperately to make me miss the games as I am drop lip for the rest of the day after a bok game! This kick and pray game is as exciting as a visit to the dentist, just not as productive. And to hear a coach try and persuade an entire nation that it works after this nation has week after week being forced to watch their team been beaten by the likes of Australia after the Kiwis put a giant score against these very same Ozzies, is just forcing me to become really unpatriotic till this coach is sent back to his beloved Bulls!

on attack maybe but defence and decision-making i reckon he would struggle in much the same way it took jpp about 6 super rugby games to “settle” at 13 – think snakey, BoD and mossie = class.

  • @Megatron (Comment 10) : I’d still like to try him there. I remember him featuring there for the Bulls a few seasons ago and he wasn’t bad at all. Without Fourie I think he’d be our best option.

Any suggestions as to an alternative at 13? I’m not happy with JDV.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : @Megatron (Comment 13) : Of those options I’d go for Jordaan as the best bet. I prefer Taute as a counter-attacking 15.
