The Australian team to face the Springboks at Loftus this weekend has been announced, with Kurtley Beale being selected in the all-important ten jersey, against rookie flyhalf Johan Goosen.

Berrick Barnes remains at fullback for the encounter, and one gets the feeling that these two players will rotate as the game goes on. Beale is the only change from the team that took on Argentina two weeks ago.

On the bench though, Stephen Moore drops out and Saia Fainga’a gets another shot, while Rob Simmons comes in as second row cover in a new five-two split amongst the reserves.

Australia: 15-Berrick Barnes, 14-Dominic Shipperley, 13-Adam Ashley-Cooper, 12-Pat McCabe, 11-Digby Ioane, 10-Kurtley Beale, 9-Nick Phipps, 8-Radike Samo, 7-Michael Hooper, 6-Dave Dennis, 5-Nathan Sharpe (captain), 4-Kane Douglas, 3-Ben Alexander, 2-Tatafu Polota Nau, 1-Benn Robinson.

Replacements: 16-Saia Fainga’a, 17-James Slipper, 18-Rob Simmons, 19-Scott Higginbotham, 20-Liam Gill, 21-Brett Sheehan, 22-Anthony Fainga’a

  • Why not just start Barnes at 10?

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 2) : It could be a ploy for both to interchange during the match to mix things up

  • @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 2) : Beale seems to be considered as more of the running/attacking flyhalf. Meyer said something to the effect that the Aussies always play a more ball-in-hand game at Loftus and he had predicted that Beale would be the starting 10.

  • Beale at 10, well if he tackles then he will be a handful for the Boks to handle. I’m more interesting in the Bok team though. I don’t think any team the Aussies select would beat the Bok team selected… Excited to see what Goosen can do.
