Coenie fit to play

It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster ride for young Bok prop Coenie Oosthuizen this week, after team doctor Craig Roberts opted to withdraw him from last Saturday’s test match against the Wallabies, citing concerns about the state of his neck.

Oosthuizen picked up the injury during the Boks’ second test against England earlier in the year and has been on the sidelines pretty much ever since; playing only one half of Currie Cup rugby ahead of his recall to the squad. There have been concerns in the past that Oosthuizen’s provincial team, the Cheetahs, may occasionally push players back into action before they’ve truly recovered from injury (just ask Juan Smith) and the extent of Roberts’ concern over the young prop would serve to indicate that he may have felt this was the case.

The player was sent to Durban earlier in the week to consult a specialist, with some speculative media stories declaring his “career may be in jeopardy” as a result of the injury.

That doom and gloom talk has all come to naught, thankfully, with Oosthuizen given the green light to return to the field of play, as early as this weekend if he’s selected. Bok coach Heyneke Meyer has already said that he won’t tinker with his match 22 to face the All Blacks after a good win at Loftus last week, but I’m sure he’ll be sorely tempted to return Oosthuizen to the number 17 jersey, ahead of Pat Cilliers, now that he’s been cleared to play.
