In a truly amazing development, the Golden Lions have actually signed two new players for next season!

With talk of a mass player exodus from the demoted Gauteng franchise dominating the headlines, the last thing anybody is really expecting is for anyone to opt to cast in their lot with the Lions at this stage; that said, for young players who don’t have a realistic shot at Super Rugby next year anyway, but are nonetheless keen to establish themselves with the Lions ahead of next year’s Currie Cup, a move could make sense.

After all, the men from Johannesburg are once again at the summit of the Currie Cup log (after winning it last year) and Super Rugby failings notwithstanding, are producing the goods (as well as Bok players) at the moment.

Blue Bulls forwards Warwick Tecklenburg (flank) and Franco Mostert (lock) have both apparently signed for the Lions for 2013 and will head south across the Jukskei on completion of this year’s Currie Cup campaign for the Bulls. While both currently feature in Pine Pienaar’s match 22, it isn’t expected that either would come into the reckoning for Super Rugby places in Pretoria next year.

  • 😆 Average Varsity Cup players…poor Lions…well it’s their fault for being so bladdy useless at Superugby; they gonna struggle big time to become a big Union, again…don’t think they will be a “Big” Union ever again TBH. I mean they don’t even have a stable/solid financial grounding…so no chance.

  • With Lions out of Super Rugby..does that mean they now have 2 teams in Vodacom Cup? Mostert is a good player but he obviously think the lions will play Super rugby again soon.
