Van der Merwe to bolster Sharks ranks

Lions acting CEO Ruben Moggee today confirmed that lock Franco van der Merwe will link up with the Sharks ahead of the 2013 Super Rugby competition, on a loan basis.

Plenty of speculation continues to do the rounds as to where specific Lions players would end up, following the team’s relegation from the SANZAR tournament next year. It was widely expected that Moggee would reel off a list of names and destinations at this morning’s press conference, but aside from the imminent departure of both Pat Cilliers and Michael Rhodes to Western Province and the Stormers, as we reported earlier, van der Merwe was the only player whose destination could be confirmed.

Jaco Taute and Elton Jantjies, both of whom have been linked with loan moves to either the Stormers or the Sharks, have apparently not yet decided as to where their immediate playing futures lie and will do so once this weekend’s test commitments are out of the way.

  • I really don’t like vd Merwe, we must back Marais brothers, Anton and PSDT. If we need lions players get JC and Taute.

  • I disagree. We can use some experience with our 4 talented but very green locks at the moment. We lost van den Berg, Ackermann, Muller, Mostert, Skeate, Hargreaves and Sykes who are all experienced, in recent years.

Having Franco just for the Super Rugby season is great. He is only on loan so our youngsters can play in the Currie Cup.

  • @TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 2) : Agreed, this could be a very good move. Everyone knows the Super 15 is about depth, the luck of the draw and plenty of experience.

  • Plum should release Sykes and play the “youngsters” in this years currie cup to get them ready for super 15. We have 4 young locks and Alberts and Deysel can both also help cover lock. Get cover at prop, only Beast and Jannie looking ready for super 15.

  • A very signing in my option…but I don’t think he will make the Match 15…Du Toit and Bressler the Boys to be…and then our other young gun Marias…come on a Good signing would have been Gerhard Mostert…or Elstadt…or even Rhodes…he fits into our play…Mostert is a Jacques Louis Potgieter tipe attitude player, he doesn’t make friend easy…he has a I am Captain attitude but doesn’t lead by example…don’t rate him, why do we always sign these warehouse springboks, big promise no game. Alberts also a 4 option…no need for Gerrie Red!

  • @JD (Comment 4) : That is just silly, Sykes is our most experienced lock at this point in time. We should utilize his remaining time at the Sharks to allow the young locks to benefit from his wealth of experience. Sykes has been a loyal servant to Sharks Rugby for a very long time, there is no reason to part ways on bad terms. Take advantage of his experience in this CC and wish him all the best in his future endeavours no matter where they may be. The Sharks can afford to be magnanimous here and still benefit from his experience.

  • And they benefit from his wealth of experiance by sitting on the bench or in the stands?! The next we will hear is that one or both Marais brothers is leaving due to a lack of gametime, while we’re repaying loyalty and using lions players. Give Sykes a break to go and find his feet in PE before next year and invest gametime in the young locks of the Sharks before their names get added to the list of locks that left.

  • I really like PSDT… That guy has impressed me immensely! I don’t think we should underestimate the experience FvdM will bring to the table. I think we will only see our young locks grow because of it. 😀

  • I think if Jandre gets more gametime he will be a great player, but currently he has to sit and gather bench time while we play Sykes and next year vd merwe. Go and read “Sharks v Bulls – by the numbers” we’re going to lose a great young lock if we carry on like this!

  • @TRF_Ezequiel (Comment 2) : 100%. Heard from a friend of mine who’s an agent that Jantjies is going to Province. We now need to throw money at Taute.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 10) : The question is do we really have a place for taute? we have a great centre stock of steyn, whitehead, jordaan wingers in mvovo , jpp & fullbacks in ludik & viljoen. flyhalf in lambie with bosman able to cover flyhalf and centre. Where would taute go? Weakness is scrumhalf cover but we have uncovered a great prospect then at prop we need a seasoned prop which is why we should have targeted pat cilliers ( but from reading he wouldnt come back) or jc.

  • The van der Merwe signing is just a loan thing so we needn’t worry about anything long term. He is experienced and will add value, but only as an impact player or stop gap. Does his loan contract state how much game time he needs?IMO this is just to stop Cheeky Watson from getting him!! 😈 Please don’t throw money at Taute. As much as he is a talented player, let as save money (put it to use in development of younger players)and use the tremendous talent we have at The Sharks at present.Look for prop backup rather. 😮

  • I think getting Van Der Merwe is a great loan deal, pity it cant be made permanent. We do have good young locks coming through but they are a bit naive and someone of Van Der Merwe’s experience will definitely help, especially at lineout time. He may not have played a tremendous amount but do not underestimate the massive impact Ross Skeate had on the young locks that are now performing well. Altho id love to see Taute signed permanently as he is a great player, i think our backline has the necessary experience, but our front 5 need some more experience…especially if we lose 1 or 2 Bok front row due to injury.

  • @markm (Comment 12) : Yes, we should rather use that money to develop a decent prop, because Chadwick makes my blood pressure shoot through the roof. Not even having Marius Joubert on the field irritates me that much.

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : And he does this in every game? 🙄

You sure these “tackles” weren’t guys accidentally running into him because he didn’t get out of the way quickly enough? (just joking)

Anyways, as long as he stays out of the backline and does not receive ANY ball, he’ll maar have to stick around.

  • @The Sharks Sharkie (Comment 15) : Yes 100%. Im hoping Hyneke Meyer looks at other prop options on the end of year tour or the Sharks will be without Beast,Bissie and Jannie come Super rugby as they will be injured, u can bet on that!
